What Students Say
Likes
- ASU has a strong academic reputation and good programs in engineering and business
- Research opportunities helps students to access cutting edge projects along with waiving off the tuition fee.
- The infrastructure is good and always access to gym, pools, grounds.
Dislikes
- ASU has large student population , it makes classes feel crowded sometimes, especially master's classrooms are filled with Indians.
- Tuition fee is expensive for international students unless you get a scholarship.
- Summers are very hot in Arizona, personally I didn't like them.
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty level of my course curriculum is hard, I would say. It is a mix of both theoretical and practical. Positive things are that the lab work and projects are very advanced to gain good hands-on experience. Negative aspect is that Few TAs are less knowledgeable and are not good enough to clear our doubts. 3 classes are scheduled in a day between 9 am and 6 pm. 60 - 90 students were there in a class. 50-80 will be Indians.
Admission Experience
- I applied to 4 colleges. I got 3 accepts and 1 reject. Acceptances are from Arizona State University, SUNY Buffalo, and the University of North Texas. The only Reject is Northeastern University. Maybe my resume was lacking work experience at that time and that is a top-tier university expecting higher grades than what I secured from my bachelor's. So I guess those are the few reasons.
- Ranking and academic reputation of the course I was enrolled, Course Curriculum, Tuition fee, and the cost of living – these are a few of the factors that influenced my decision. I have applied on my own through their website and later sent my GRE, IELTS test scores. LORs are uploaded by my professors through the link they got by email. Accepted exams are GRE, IELTS/TOEFL. Min scores are GRE - 305+, IELTS - 6.5 and above band and good academic grades in bachelor's. Overall admission experience is smooth and no challenges are faced.
- I applied to the Fall 2022 intake. Ranking and academic reputation of the course I was enrolled, Course Curriculum, Tuition fee, and the cost of living – these are a few of the factors that influenced my decision. The admission process nearly took one month from application to acceptance. I applied on my own through their website and later sent my GRE, IELTS test scores. LORs were uploaded by my professors through the link they got by email.
Faculty
- 1:18 is the faculty-to-student ratio in my course. It is somewhat good; professors are friendly and we can interact with them whenever we want. They make sure everyone understands the concepts they are teaching.
- The concepts and the lab work are enough to secure a job. Professors can only help by giving you RA positions under them. I admire the VLSI faculty in the university, as they teach as per industry standards.
Campus Life
- Our college has 4 campuses. 1) Tempe 2) Polytechnic campus 3) Downtown Phoenix 4) West Valley. Libraries, playgrounds, gyms, pools, and health centres are all available on all four campuses. Tempe is the main & large campus.
- Events like Bollywood night, concerts, and football matches will take place often on campus. Cricket tournaments, dance club events, and music events also happen more often on campus.
Part Time Jobs
- Working Off-campus is illegal in the USA. It is usually 20 people out of 100 secure TA/RA positions. They get paid around $2500 per month. Other on-campus jobs include student worker, which is nothing but working at food kitchens, provisional stores, Desk/office assistant and graders for a few undergrad courses. Pay rate will be around $14-16. 20 hrs is the max limit per week and during summer/winter vacations, you can work up to 40 hrs per week. It is easy when you have referrals.
- Indian students will be everywhere. They were mostly working at Food kitchens and as desk/office assistants. They earn around $14-16 per hour. It is not that difficult to secure a part-time job, but you should have good connections on campus to secure the part-time job faster.
- There is a portal called Aramark which is useful for applying for jobs like food service and cashier, and the college portal will be there for student jobs like grader, desk assistant and transcript data entry jobs. You should be prepared with a corresponding Resume & cover letter whenever you apply for a new job.
Placement
- Usually 80% of students from our batch secure employment within 6 months of completing the course, but now the job market is not good, so the number would be much lesser than that. The average salary would be $90k - $110k that most of the students can expect from my batch.
- There is no such thing as a campus placement in the USA in any of the colleges; you must apply through LinkedIn or company career portals. But Career fair happens often where you can get connections with company recruiters. Major companies like Intel, Qualcomm, Microchip, NXP, and Micron hire graduates from my programme.
Accommodation
- I opted for off-campus accommodation. I googled the nearest apartments to the university and found a few friends on Whatsapp university groups to share the accommodation. Total monthly rent for the whole apartment, i.e., 2 bed 2 bath, is around $2000. It includes rent, water bill, Garbage etc. Electricity bill will be around $120.
- Make sure you share a room with your course batchmates; it will be easier to do assignments & prepare for the exams. there are few communities that are mostly filled with Indians, like Volta on Broadway, Agave apartments, DPV etc. My accommodation is 2 miles away from the University.
Exams
- Accepted exams are GRE, IELTS/TOEFL. Min scores are GRE - 305+, IELTS - 6.5 and above band and good academic grades in bachelor's. SOP, LOR, a well-crafted resume, and academic transcripts & certificates from your 10th class to bachelor's.
- No, Interview was not a part of my application process for this university. Very few universities take an interview as a part of their application process.
Fees
-
When I was studying, each student from our course had to complete 30 credits minimum. They charge $1500 per credit. We should pay the fee semester-wise. This is just the tuition fee, as there is no hostel; we used to stay in rented shared apartments. So, monthly expenses are around $1000-$1200, including house rent, electricity bill, water bill, groceries and other miscellaneous expenses.
Scholarship
- No, I haven't received any scholarship during my course. Few of my friends got the scholarships. To receive scholarships, you should get a job in the university like Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant.
- So that you will get a monthly stipend around $2500. Along with the stipend, you will also receive a tuition fee waiver for that semester. Complete or partial waiver depends on the number of working hours you work as an RA or TA per week.
