Part-Time Work Opportunities in Boston for Indian Students

Indian students studying in Boston can take up part-time work to support their living expenses while pursuing their studies. The opportunity to work part-time is available under the F-1 student visa, but it comes with certain rules and limitations that students must follow.

  • Students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions
  • During official university breaks, students can work full-time (up to 40 hours per week)
  • Work is usually on-campus (library, dining services, administrative roles)
  • Off-campus work is allowed only with authorisation (CPT or OPT)
  • According to the U.S. Department of Labour Wage and Hour Division, the minimum wage in Massachusetts is $15.00 (₹1,411) per hour

This means Indian students can earn a decent amount to manage their daily expenses such as food, transportation, and personal costs. However, it is important to understand that part-time income is not sufficient to cover tuition fees and should be considered only as financial support for living expenses while studying in Boston.

  • I chose to accommodate myself outside the campus, as it is relatively cheap

  • I found it through whatsapp and Facebook groups; Monthly rent was 600 USD. this was for a shared room in a three-bedroom apartment, which is how I managed to get the cost so low in an expensive area like Fenway/Kenmore. The Boston housing market is incredibly fast-paced, especially from July to September. Good, affordable places would get dozens of enquiries within hours of being posted. I had to be constantly checking the groups and messaging people immediately. Sharing a room is the most effective way to save money. Finally, try to connect with seniors from your programme; they often have rooms opening up and can give you the most reliable leads.
  • The accommodation is a 15 minute walk from the university. A large number of Indian and other international students at Northeastern tend to live in neighbourhoods that offer a good balance of affordability and proximity to campus. The most common areas are Mission Hill, Roxbury Crossing, and parts of Jamaica Plain (near the Orange Line T station).

  • I was staying off-campus from the moment I landed in the US. There are no on-campus dorms for graduate students at Northeastern University.
  • I paid somewhere around $530-$560 at each of the places I stayed at. The heat and hot water were mostly included. You always had to pay for the electricity and WiFi.
  • I stayed around 15-20 minutes away from campus. I used to walk to campus. I stayed in the area where most Indian students stayed, the Longwood Medical Area.

  • Off-campus, already has friends and their support was present.
  • Monthly rent was 800$. This included heat and water.
  • The challenge of budget friendly accommodations near university was there.
  • Join whatsapp groups, use fb marketplace and you will get the best deals.
  • Mine was a 20 mins walk about 1.5 miles from the university. Boston has Indians everywhere

  • The Graduate Students doesn't have On-Campus accommodation option. But, Northeastern offers off-campus house searching facilities.
  • I found my first accommodation through Northeastern Housing groups, where each day the messages are piled up with accommodations for students.
  • The monthly rent varies depending on the place. If you find a place near University, it will cost more than $1000 for private room and $700 for shared room.
  • I stayed in a shared room where I paid $625 including utilities (Water, Gas, sewage) and there will be additional utility charges (electricity and Wi-Fi).
  • I would say check in the Northeastern Housing groups for accommodation, which is the easier way, and also, check in Facebook pages for accommodations.
  • My accommodation is 0.8 miles away from University, and it is a place called Roxbury, where most of the Indian students stay, because of less monthly rent, easier bus service access.

I chose this university as their Internship program known as COOP was the most important factor and their ranking, also having good support for COOP will help me in searching for a full-time job. The College is not that great if you want a stable start as there is no on-campus job that you can get easily, everyone is Indian so no foreign exposure. Every Indian has their setting there so that's the only reason they have some on-campus job. Fees are high, too many issues in college administration. But one good thing is the coop search experience you have there you will grind very hard to get an internship which will make you job ready and they have good support for the intern but don't come with high hopes here as even the city is costly.

The admission process was quite simple for northeastern. I filled an online application. The application required your bachelor transcript, SOP, recommendation from 2 people and your English proficiency test results. They had rolling admits so it took around 1 month for me to get an admit from them. Then to confirm my seat I had to do a initial deposit for a couple of hundred dollars. I did not go by any consultants I researched about it on the internet.

I didn't like the curriculum and the master's was only for 1 year. I was looking for a 2-year master's as I have completed my graduation in 3 years I want to pursue a 2-year master's to get a better understanding of my major.

SoP submitted. 3 lor submitted: 1. Hod, 2. Professor 3. Research paper professor I choose this University when software engineering tech job market was good and hiring of new grad was great. Currently its worst and nobody is hiring new grad students. I have mixed feelings for starters there are no on campus jobs on campus jobs is very hard to find here lots of Indian students and international students are trying to apply for on campus jobs and there are very less on campus jobs. as you don't have on campus job it becomes expensive and Boston itself is very expensive with skyrocketing rents and living expenses. On the other hand the university is good infrastructure good professors with deep knowledge and Boston is also a good place for finding jobs as it is hub for software and biotechnological companies lots of companies hire Northeastern students

My experience has been great. The university fosters inclusivity with numerous Indian clubs and events. While the overall curriculum was good, I expected more in terms of the technology taught and course selections. The campus life and supportive community have made my journey amazing.
