What Students Say
Likes
- Location : Boston is a great place to start a journey in a new country. It is vibrant. You get to experience all the four seasons.
- Campus: The campus is big yet centralized. It is also modern which gives you a high class feel.
- Opportunities - Varied range of on-campus job opportunities.
Dislikes
- Weather : Boston can get real cold and that can lead to months of depressing cold days.
- Competition : Even though there are a lot of on campus job opportunities, the students strength can make getting the job very competitive.
- Expense: Northeastern, because it is a private university, is very expensive in terms of tuition fee, healthcare etc.
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty for my coursework was intermediate. As it was a professional course it was very fast paced and practical.
- It was extremely fast paced and that was a bit of a negative experience. However, the course duration is short and the course itself is very practical.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to only one college and one course.
-
Northeastern University, Master's in Professional studies in Analytics from College of Professional studies and I got admission from here. I applied to this course for January intake.
-
In my opinion, the selection process for a master's degree depends a lot on when you are applying. The sooner the better the chances of getting an admit. Also, SOPs should be convincing.
- I did not receive rejections from anywhere.
- The factors like coursework had the major influence and also the fact that my friends went to the same university gave me some comfort.
- The admission process was the fill the applications which involved GRE scores and I chose duo lingo for language test and writing SOP and LORs. Apart from this, undergrad marksheet and high school result marksheet were needed.
- The overall experience was pretty straightforward and simple.
- I applied for Winter intake. That was the only option available for my course. I would suggest taking Fall intake as that allows you to use even your first summer for internships.
- I applied in July and got my result by September end. It took me about 2 months but the process of receiving I20 took a while and I got it by November end and my visa date was in December first week which made it very close. I have heard this happening from many students.
Class Schedule
- One class in a day. Usually, 2 in a week and the timings were evening. 5.30pm to 8.30pm
- Average number of students were 15.
- The majority were Asians. So about 50%percent of the class was Indian.
Faculty
- Not very sure about the ratio. But out of 15 subjects, I had 12 unique faculties. I think if you know a faculty better and if you like their teaching then you tend to choose the same faculty for other courses if they are teaching that.
- Yes, the faculty teaches well according to course content but for the job, I believe nobody can teach as the requirements are constantly evolving.
- Yes, they assist.
- Professor Kasun Smarsinghe. His approach of making students understand the concept is really great.
Campus Life
-
Northeastern University has 2 campuses in Boston.
Main campus - 360 Huntington Avenue
second campus - South station -
Library, sports(swimming pool, football court), gym, canteen
-
NEU Sanskriti, Bean town club, readers and writers club, bridges. NEU has a holistic community therefore all types of festivals and events are celebrated. Like holi, diwali, navratri, onam, paryushan etc
Part Time Jobs
- Almost everyone get the chance to secure TA/RA positions. 18-21 $ per hour. wait staff, RSO, TA, RA are some of the jobs available.
- 20 hours /week a student can work
- It is very difficult to secure a job because of competition.
- Avg hourly wage is somewhere between 15-21 dollars. It is very difficult to find any part time job because of competition. It all depends on the job. Usually there is a portal for on campus job. Mostyl is a referral system.
Placement
- The job situation is tricky. It all depends on the market. Approx 70 percent get their job!
Average salary 85k - Apply through LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor,
- Placement was tough
- Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Dell.
Accommodation
- Off-campus, already has friends and their support was present.
- Monthly rent was 800$. This included heat and water.
- The challenge of budget friendly accommodations near university was there.
- Join whatsapp groups, use fb marketplace and you will get the best deals.
- Mine was a 20 mins walk about 1.5 miles from the university. Boston has Indians everywhere
Exams
-
IELTS OR TOEFL or duolingo , GRE OR GMAT, and SAT is for undergrad courses.
Statement of Purpose, LOR and resume/CV. -
Mostly GRE/GMAT/SAT is for testing aptitude and language and TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo is for testing fluency and hold over English language
-
The interview was not part of my admission process. It usually happens for MBA courses and with business schools.
Fees
-
The fees included credit wise structure.
It was about $1000 per credit at my time. The fees charged was semester wise. Being a master's student, college accommodation was not compulsory for us. However, health insurance was about 2800$ per year. -
Monthly expense:
*800 for rent
*150 utilities
*35 mobile bill
*200 groceries
*200 fun and entertainment
*Transportation 100-120
Scholarship
- No, I did not receive any scholarship.
- None of my classmates or people from my coursework received any scholarship that I am aware of.
- I think there is a way we can waive off subjects that we have covered in our undergrad but when it comes to scholarship the chances of getting one is very rare, in my opinion also because of the competition. I am not much aware of the average number of students receiving scholarships per year.
