Course Curriculum

10

  • Everyday, I used to grind by learning new things, juggling through assignments. I used to stay lat nights at University, to complete my assignments and try to catch up with the curriculum.
  • More than theoretical, it is practical in each course, where they offer best hands-on tools to excel.

Admission Experience

  • Applied to 4 Universities totally,
    Northeastern University - Admitted
    George Washington University - Admitted
    University of Delaware - Admitted
University of Wisconsin (Madison) - Rejected

  • I got Scholarship from George Washington University ($8000/semester) and University of Delaware (Fully funded),But I accepted Northeastern University for Master of Science in Data Analytics Engineering.
  • I got rejection from 1 University (University of Wisconsin - Madison),One reason I think I got a reject because I applied very late and I don't think my SOP, and LORs are too strong to get me into.
  • Northeastern offers Global Co-Op Opportunities, one of the top in United States of America.
  • Admission Process:
  • I applied for Masters in Data Analytics Engineering with an application fee of $100 (which is refundable). The documents required to submit while applying (SOP, LORs (3), Academic Transcript, Standardized Test Scores (GRE, IELTS)). Then, it took 4 weeks to get the decision letter. The minimum scores for each standardized test scores are (GRE: 290 (Min), IELTS: 6.5(Min))
  • The overall admission experience was really easier for me. The Northeastern support team was helpful to me every time I mailed them.
  • I came in Fall Intake. During the Fall, the weather will be convenient to travel and go to different places to get the city vibe. We can meet lot of people, attend events, explore, and enjoy everything at this time of intake.
  • The admission process took 4 to 6 weeks. I applied in February 2022, and it took exactly 45 days to get my decision letter

Class Schedule

10

  • In a day, there are totally 2 classes, each 1 and half hours.
  • Average number of students in each class will be more than 60.
  • Out of which, there will be 60% of Indian students enrolled in my course.

Faculty

10

  • In my 1st semester, the faculty-to-student ratio was 1:30
  • This drastically affect the interaction with faculty. But, in each class, there will be TAs (Teaching Assistants), who will be helping to solve our doubts regarding assessments, projects, etc.
  • Each class has a projector in the front of the class, and few classes will be row-wise, and some classes, it will be concentric, where the faculty will try to talk to students to discuss about the doubts, more like doubt clearing session.
  • Yes, few professor hire students to work part time as Research assistants.
  • The Khoury College of Computer Sciences has the best professor, where I chose one course - "Applied Natural Language Processing", where his way of teaching was splendid, and every week, he will conduct Google Meet, to discuss about any doubts or problems that students face in the course and solve it.

Campus Life

10

  • There are total 13 Campuses, where Boston campus is the main and Vibrant one. While the competitive work environment (co-op hustle) is real, you will appreciate the rooftop library views, complimentary gyms (Marino Center!), and engaging events such as Howler.
  • The city boasts over 400 clubs, including SASA’s Diwali celebration, hackathons, and Quidditch. While socializing may require effort, Boston offers an abundance of opportunities for recreation. If you miss home, there is even a samosa study group for those who need a taste of Indian culture.

Part Time Jobs

  • There are plenty of on-campus opportunities, where in each class, you can see more than 3 people appointed as TA position, to help the students
  • The pay range varies from $17 to $19/hour
  • The other on-campus positions are working as Gym instructor, Building operator, Network engineer, and a lot more
  • The maximum hours of work allowed per week is 20.
  • It is little difficult to secure an on-campus job because there are very less positions, but there are so many students.
  • Students typically earn approximately $15 per hour in their part-time jobs, most commonly working as Cashiers in the campus canteen. The hiring process involves attending a comprehensive one-hour interview with the canteen supervisor. During this interview, candidates must demonstrate their customer service skills and ability to handle cash transactions efficiently. If they meet all the necessary qualifications and show a good fit for the team, they will be offered the chance to work part-time. Securing such a position is generally considered to be relatively straightforward for most students.

Placement

8

  • After completing the degree,  it is pretty easy to secure a job.
  • Almost 90% of the people after graduation will be placed.
  • Most people in my program (Data Analytics Engineering), will earn an average salary of $70,000 per year.
  • After graduation, few people who had done their internships earlier, would convert it into full time. Others will apply through different job portals like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Monster, and they will get interviews based on their previous work experience, domain knowledge, and skills.
  • Major companies like JPMorgan, BCG, Fidelity Investments, Apple, Microsoft, Salesforce, had hired students from my program.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • The Graduate Students doesn't have On-Campus accommodation option. But, Northeastern offers off-campus house searching facilities.
  • I found my first accommodation through Northeastern Housing groups, where each day the messages are piled up with accommodations for students.
  • The monthly rent varies depending on the place. If you find a place near University, it will cost more than $1000 for private room and $700 for shared room.
  • I stayed in a shared room where I paid $625 including utilities (Water, Gas, sewage) and there will be additional utility charges (electricity and Wi-Fi).
  • I would say check in the Northeastern Housing groups for accommodation, which is the easier way, and also, check in Facebook pages for accommodations.
  • My accommodation is 0.8 miles away from University, and it is a place called Roxbury, where most of the Indian students stay, because of less monthly rent, easier bus service access.

Exams

  • GRE and IELTS are the mandatory ones. The minimum score to consider for admission are 290 (GRE), and 6.5 (IELTS).
  • The necessary documents to complete the admission process are Statement of Purpose (SOP), to tell why I am really interested in the University, followed by 3 Letter of Recommendation (at least) either Academic or Professional. Then, followed by CV to be submitted (Updated with your Bachelors degree, and other achievements (recent ones)).
  • There were no interviews at Northeastern.

Fees

  • Breakdown of Fees:
  • Health Insurance (Per Year) - $2,500
  • Totally there are 8 courses, 6 Core Courses and 2 Elective Courses
  • Each Core course costs upto $7,000 per semester and each elective course costs upto $6,500 per semester
  • Totally 33 credit based. Each course offers 4 credits, and an additional 1 credit for Introduction to Co-Op course, where the advisors help us  to craft my resume, cover letter, help you get into Co-Op.
  • Estimate of my Monthly Expenses:
  • Each Semester costs $15,000, for living expenses (the breakdown as follows:
  • Monthly rent - $600, Groceries - ($200 - $300), Mobile SIM expenses - $25

Scholarship

  • At Northeastern University, scholarships are primarily awarded to undergraduate students, covering a wide array of courses. Each of these courses can offer scholarships of up to $10,000 per semester.
  • Typically, more than ten students per course benefit from these scholarships. This system aims to support a diverse student body, helping to alleviate the financial burden of higher education for undergraduates. Unfortunately, these scholarships don't seem to extend as frequently to graduate programs, which might be why you didn't receive one for your course.
