Master of Fisheries Science [MFSc] (Fish Processing Technology)

All you need to know about fisheries

Students view on course curriculum

Generally fisheries is a very diversified sector. There's lot more than we know. This broad area of the field amazed me when i thought to know about this course. This course incorporate hands on projects, internships and lab works that can develop us in job ready skills. However this course lacks the recent trends and innovations in the syllabus, though the staff can share a little knowledge about the recent trends. May be in this area the university should work on it. The exams are perfectly fixed with the view of giving the students enough time to understand the subject. However some courses are very difficult to understand.

Internship opportunity provided by the college

On the 7th semester you'll be sent out for IPT programme for Feed mills, Processing plants, fish and shrimp farms and also to government centres. The stipend will be varied according to the company and farms. . You'll be sent out to different kind of activities based on your interest. . Like you will be sent out to learn to how to manage a fish/shrimp/ornamental farm. May be you can be able to be a farm technician after that. . For processing plants, after thr learning process , you may be appointed as a supervisor or quality control officer or a technician (after interview).

Placement scenario in the campus

There is a special division called carrer guidance cell. Through this cell, the placement activities are Carried out. . Students are eligible for campus placements upon the completion of final semester(8th semester) . The students are mostly placed in aqua feeds based companies followed by fish processing plants ( in the private sector) For gov jobs you need to appear for exam conducted by state government (inspector and Assistant director jobs) and interview for Assitant professor . . Some of the companies include Sheng long, water base feeds, CPF. . Some of the placements in private include 4 to 5 lpa. After graduating most of the students apt out for higher students in both indian and foreign institutes. However about 60% of the students gets placed every year and the rest are pursuing higher studies. As of now I have completed my master's degree and planning to purse doctor's degree. After this I'm planning to become an Assistant professor

Fees of the course per semester and scholarship available in the college

For Both UG and PG fee per semester will be between 15k to 20k which includes all other fee. When comparing to other courses, this course is most affordable. Mostly, the government of tamilnadu spend most of the money for fisheries discipline. Fot Hostel one time payment of 10k till the completion of course. Also, they will reimburse the money once you graduated after some deduction. For food, the mess will be run by the students with guidance of warden and deputy warden. There's a monthly mess bill. The bill will be varied according to the monthly expenses. However the bill will be under or around 4k including eb and labour charges. For Sc/St 50% deduction in fee. Scholarships available for ug students based on categories. Students will get 10k to 15k per year. For pg and phd students scholarships will be provided by the university. Scholarship amount of 4k per month for post graduate and 5k per month for phd students.

Students view on campus life

The campus life offers various opportunities for social engagement like sports activities, cultural programs. The infrastructure of the college was quite good with well equipped laboratory, spacious classroom, and wifi. . For each year Sports day, college day and hostel day are celebrated within the college. Also there will be inter-collegiate sports and cultural events in the month of march. Other college events are celebrated in the second part of the year. . The Library is well equipped with computers with wifi and advanced books from both indian and foreign authors. Also they have magazine and daily news paper. .The classrooms are under cctv surveillance and a smart board along with a podium. . Though there is not enough space for all kind of sports activities, you'll be highly instructed to engage in sports activities. . For othe activities like music, there's an individual area in the main college campus with keyboards and guitars. The management highly appreciate your interest in sports and other activities.

Facilities provided in the college hostel

The hostel mess will be run by the students only. The menu will be decided by the students. So the students can decide what they want in the menu. . A spacious room will be provided with 2 fan. You'll be accommodated with 2 or 3 students based on the size of the room. . The menu was super good. The menu contains Fish, chicken and egg on a regular basis. Occasionally crab and shrimp will be provided. There'll be a special menu on cultural events. . Hostel registration process is quite similar. It'll be done along with college admission process

Students view on faculties

For every 5 students there will be one teaching faculty. The faculties are student friendly and you can approach them easily. I liked 5 faculties. Because they had guided me throughout the course period not only in academics. They also helped me in personal problems and career development like a brother. Though some of the faculties are strict and they do not engage with you other than academics. There will be one midterm and one final practical and semester exam. The exam will be moderate to tough. Out of 60 students (for a batch) 3 to 5 students fail to clear the exam.

Admission process and college competence

I had applied for engineering, agri, veterinary and fisheries. I desired to be an veterinarian and my second go to option was engineering. I didn't prefer agri. During counseling process, i couldn't place in the veterinary so i chose engineering in chennai. I studied engineering for 2 months. Then I came to know about the counseling of fisheries stream. When i went to search about fisheries. I was amazed and surprised about this sector. Prior to this i didn't know much about this stream. This made me to discontinue my engineering and made me to purse my career in fisheries. My coutoff was not enough to be an veterinarian (my cutoff -190.5). The admission for fisheries is pretty much similar to agri stream. The eligibile subjects are Maths- biology and pure science groups. The admission process is through counselling. You must have scored 50% in your 12th to be eligible to apply for this stream.

Night Life

The nightlife is the time period in the college life. After the busy day, we'll be taking some rest and then assemble in ground for sports. Some of them, will hangout with their friends to the nearby fast food centre or cafeteria. These kind of activities can help us to reduce our stress and helps in improving our performance. . The college has a in built gym and a canteen. Also we have access to outside gym and cafeterias. . For outing, 5pm to 8pm. Library will be closed at 5pm and the canteen at 7pm. . The most hangout spot is juice centre and turf cricket. .
