JNU FAQs 2026

Ques. How is life at JNU for MA students? Is it all hectic, or do students also get time to enjoy themselves?

Ans. Life at JNU for MA students is a mix of hard work and campus fun. The studies can be demanding, with lots of reading, seminars, and self-study, but flexible schedules make it easier to manage. Alongside academics, students enjoy hostel life, cultural fests, debates, clubs, and hanging out at dhabas. Politics and activism are a regular part of campus life, which may feel new at first. Overall, JNU offers a challenging but enjoyable experience with space for both learning and social life.

Ques. What is it like to study at Jawaharlal Nehru University?

Ans. Life at JNU for MA students combines rigorous academics with an active campus culture. Heavy reading, seminars, and discussions demand effort, but flexible schedules allow self-paced learning. While political activism may occasionally disrupt classes, students enjoy a vibrant social life through fests, clubs, dhaba hangouts, and hostel gatherings. The green campus, diverse peer group, and relaxed hostel rules help balance academic pressure with fun and freedom.

Ques. Is the government subsidy for JNU students justified when institutions like IIMs are not subsidized and IITs have increased their course fees?

Ans. Yes, it can be justified because JNU is meant to stay affordable for students from poorer backgrounds and focuses on public education and research, while IIMs and IITs are more job-oriented and charge higher fees as they expect graduates to earn more. Different types of institutions have different goals, so they are funded differently.

Most of the questions asked in the JNU PhD interview are about the research field the candidate plans to join. Below are the top 3 tips to crack the JNU PhD interview:

Are JNU admissions tough?

Sabeer Chalana
Himanshu Yadav

JNU admissions are quite competitive due to its high reputation in India and across the world. Students from Delhi and outside of Delhi compete for admission to various JNU courses. The university accepts CUET for admission to its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. When the CUET results are declared, JNU releases its cutoff scores and merit list accordingly.

Candidates who have a CUET score that is at least equal to the cutoff scores will be called for the counseling session and will be allotted seats in their preferred institutions. Since a large number of applicants apply for JNU admissions, candidates must aim for a high percentile and a high CUET score. Good marks can ensure admission to JNU if not any other parameter.

How is the JNU MBA program?

Mansi Jain

JNU MBA is a two-year full-time postgraduate program offered through the university's Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management & Entrepreneurship. The fee for this course is INR 12 lac for general category students. Since JNU started offering an MBA program in 2019, there have been both positive and negative reviews about the course.

Why pursue a JNU MBA?

  • Offers an MBA degree that holds great value
  • JNU MBA program is ranked 230 by Business Today
  • New infrastructure and excellent facilities are provided to its students
  • Students also receive placement opportunities.

Why not pursue a JNU MBA?

  • Students and faculty members have a political influence
  • INR 12 lac fee is too high compared to other JNU courses
  • Hostel charges are on the higher end of the spectrum
  • The MBA program is not up-to-date.

Despite the positive and negative reviews given by JNU MBA students, candidates still prefer a JNU degree over other institutions.

Which one is a better option for an MCA, MNNIT Allahabad or JNU New Delhi?

Raktim Tarafdar
Aarti AhujaLives in Allahabad

JNU conducts the toughest entrance for MCA. Its faculty and environment are ideal for this degree. MNNIT Allahabad is a good institute, but its MCA is not comparable to JNU.

However, JNU does not have a concrete curriculum for its MCA entrance. Its entrance is conducted in a non serious manner, and the paper is difficult to crack. Moreover, it has a lot of reservations and quotas, even on such limited seats.

On the other hand, NIMCET is conducted in an organized manner, and its paper is easy to understand. The syllabus and blueprints are made available on the official website for good preparation.

Despite all this, JNU has a very professional education system. It does not offer any placements, but you’ll get good exposure on campus and land a job on your own. The MCA faculty is highly experienced, but I am not well aware of the university’s infrastructure.

Talking of MNNIT Allahabad, it is a highly reputed NIT with a good placement record. Its campus is completely ragging free, and the environment is strict on academics. But its hostels aren’t in a good shape.

I would suggest JNU New Delhi for an MCA, but even MNNIT is a decent choice.

Even though your CUET-PG Sanskrit score (236, 83.33%) is above the General category cutoff, admission at Jawaharlal Nehru University also depends on merit rank, seat availability, category-wise lists, program preferences, and multiple counseling rounds. If your rank falls below the last admitted candidate or seats are filled, admission may be delayed or not offered yet.

For CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) admissions, there is no fixed minimum 12th mark, but candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Higher marks improve merit ranking and increase chances of seat allocation in engineering courses.
