- Multidisciplinary work culture: my research spanned two departments, and I had four supervisors with different strengths.
- Open to new ideas, some of my best innovations happened here.
- Excellent lab facilities and lab staff
Dislikes
- It was difficult to get vegetarian food during events and social gatherings. While the situation might be different now, at least in Europe, vegan snacks is default.
- During my research, some of the engineering facilities across department required payments that and they were quite expensive.
- In general, the social gathering and community is not the most welcoming for non-drinkers.
Accommodation
- Leeds is a city of Universities (four in total) and the campuses are dispersed in the city. I first choose a University managed accommodation. This was through the support of the University staff and through the same application process. Check-in was easy and once I arrived, I figured out that renting private accommodation of various types was less expensive. Monthly rent through the four years for different kinds of accommodation was 400-700 GBP. Post Covid and the economic slump in the UK has affected these severely.
- I would recommend looking for shared accommodation with a private bathroom. These are often the best. I would choose 3-5 room accommodations. People from different countries need different extents of heating. So ensure you have a separate heating/radiator control for your room. Do not hesitate to live with people from different countries – although don't be shocked to see cultural differences. When people live together, a lot of things that wouldn't matter would start getting more important.
- I would also warn students to check the renting company and contract details to the last dot. These cannot be talked about or resolved when issues arise, as in India.
- All my accommodations were 1-2 km from my University. All students, including Indian students who are there for more than a year, look for private accommodation. Students who come for a 10-month course often stay in University accommodation for students. These are more crowded, though nice if you like living with your friends.

- The faculty, students were for the most part friendly and willing to help students from every background get in-tune with British culture, including volunteering and work experience.
Dislikes
- The one thing I dislike is probably a lack of reaching out done by the University for students with mental health issues, I do feel it's something that the university could've done better, because there are varying factors that contribute to a student being down (a bad job market, their own personal reasons, etc.)
Accommodation
- A friend recommended the accommodation I stayed in for 2 years (word of mouth). The rent was 180 ppw. The accommodation had an inbuilt gym, a recreational space, night-time security, a lobby, an elevator, a generator, and a laundry space, and the accommodation also held events for students in there for major holidays.

- It was a decent experience in terms of academics.
Dislikes
- When it comes to getting a job, I was on my own.
- Unlike India, I had to approach recruiters and HRs for applications. There is no concept of campus placement or any help form the College for securing a job.

- The Tannery Leeds was reasonably priced, offering en suite to all residents. Regular checks and testing of rooms and very responsive staff too. Found it through Amber Students and monthly rent inclusive of all bills was around £600.

- I was paying about 125 GBP per week. I found the accommodation through the university website and the university helped me finalise it. All facilities were included in this, including an en suite bathroom and toilet.
- It had a bed with a mattress, a washing machine, a refrigerator, hobs and ovens for cooking, cupboards, desks, chairs, common rooms, vending rooms, bicycle parking stations, and nearby shops. This cost also included maintenance and wifi.

- One thing I really liked about my course at the University of Leeds was the frequency of networking and workshop events available to attend in a one-year course. These events not only helped students to connect with faculty outside course but provided a great platform to learn more about the current job market with discussions on relevant openings and trends.
Dislikes
- On the flip side, one thing I did not like much about the course was the short duration which meant there was lesser time to get started with academics and life in a new country while simultaneously stressing about the job market with early applications. Ideally, I would have loved to see more personal skills and networking based tasks involved in the curriculum but understand the limitations in a one-year course.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation online with the help of sites such as reddit and google. Since I couldn't decide in time for on-campus accommodations, I had to pick a private one, but it did not make much difference, as most accommodations are pretty close to the campus. Rent was around £175 per week for a duration of a year.
