What Students Say
Likes
- The thing which I liked the most here is the brotherhood and helping nature of the individuals. Everyone from staff to Prof and even the locals here are very kind and polite to students. Students also live like a family.
- The Campus is here is very beautiful and as we know it is one of the largest campus of an institute in india, so we have many places to hang out with friends and enjoy. The Institute has blinkit and KFC situtated in it as well.
- The Professors here are also highly qualified and have plethora of knowledge. They are very kind and polite to students, if you are eager to learn then you can get outstanding technical learnings from the professors.
Dislikes
- The curriculam in my course is highly rigorous and tough, you have to apply high efforts and prepare well to get good grades, as even having difficult syllabus sometimes the prof. may set challenging paper as well depending on them.
- The vendors here might charge you high or deviating prices of things, so you must have negotiation skills otherwise you may get fooled.
- The mess food is absolutely bad here sometimes and at times you may even have to compromise with hygiene, so you should always save money, to get food from canteens or restaurants here when needed.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chosen this course due to my interest in Electronics and Semiconductor Industry, especially in VLSI as we know the basis of today and future advanced technology is going to be VLSI and ULSI and packages in this field are also satisfying so not need to worry about that. As I said the course curricula is almost completely aligned with industry and real world application aspects whether we talk about Semiconductor Devices, Signals and Sytems etc. all the courses give us the technical knowledge and applications of the same. But sometimes as IIT Professors are 'IIT Profs', they go very much deeper into the concepts which makes the lecture a little irrelevant and they also might ask questions from that concept in exam even if that wasn't in syllabus, so you do not have to bound yourself to textbook knowledge, you should always be eager to learn things. So I think Professors should take a look on this issue. The semester exams (mid and end) almost occur after 1-1.5 months, and in between there are class tests, surprise tests as well and at the time of end sem there are lab exams as well along with theory exams. As I said the exams here are might be easy to very difficult depending on the professors, sometimes the exam is so difficult that even toppers score 13/30 and might be easy that the class average become 20/30 so you should always ask seniors how a particular professors sets the exam.
Internships Opportunities
The Internships are offered in the 3rd year of B.Tech., in CDC Internships Drive 2024-25, till Oct 3rd, 2024 my department i.e, E&ECE had the second most no. of offers made to a department which was 103 offers and CSE had the the most around 135 offers. The prominent comapnies which provide internship opportunities to Students in IIT KGP are Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, Honeywell, Mastercard, Texas instruments, Qualcomm, Intel, Micron, AMD, MediaTek, STMicroelectronics... and many more. There isn't any data released by my institute on the roles offered, but according to seniors they take Students in the roles of Analog or Digital Circuit Designer, Signal Processing Engineer, VLSI Design Engineer, RTL Design Engineer, Embedded Systems Engineer etc. from my department. In roles like VLSI Design Engineer, you have to design and Simulate ICs using EDA softwares like Cadence Virtuoso, Synopsis etc. The Signal Processing Engineers work with signals as its name suggests, like synthesising and modifying signals, from input like sensor data, communications, audio signals etc. Other roles can be understood on deep on internet.
Placement Experience
The Students here can apply for CDC Placements in Final Year and if I tell about B.Tech. Specifically then in 7th Semester of their course. Many prominent companies visit here for recruiting the brilliant minds like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, IBM, Texas Instruments, Tata Steel, L&T, Bajaj Auto, Flipkart, American Express, Infosys, Wipro, PwC....and many more. There isn't any data provided by our institute to us stating of the highest and average package by particular comapanies and the profiles offered. But I can tell you of my department's 2023-24 CDC Placement drive: We had the highest no. of offers that is 128. Highest offer made was 1.4Cr INR pa and Median and average package offered were 21-22 lakhs pa and 25-26 lakhs pa respectively. almost 87% students had got placed in the last placement season. The 2024-25 Placement season isn't over now, but till Dec 2 2024, again we had the highest no. of offers that is 20. If I talk about my future plans, I want to go into reasearch in VLSI Industry in future as the VLSI is Tech of the future.

Campus Life
There are many fests in IIT KGP which we enjoy a lot, here is a list of those: Spring Fest: typically held in January, last time from 24 Jan to 26 Jan 2025 Kshitij: The Techno-Management fest: typically held in January, last time from 17th to 19 Jan 2025 Shaurya: A sports fest: typically held in October but last time it was organised from 10th Jan to 12 Jan 2025 Global Entrepreneurship Summit: A fest for Entrepreneurs: Typically held in February, last time held from 7th to 9th feb If I talk about our Central Library, we have a wide range of books from engineering to philosophy it covers various fields and domains, over more than 3 lakh physical books are their in our halls of library, hundreds of printed journals and thousands of soft copies of journals are there, theses are also present there, and these things are easily accessible. In Nalanda Complex (where most of the Classes are held) we have many facilities like Air Conditioned classrooms, large space and enough benches for students, Mic, Speaker Computer and Projector facilities are also there in classrooms for professors. We don't excel in Academics only we make remarkable achievements in sports as well, we have NSO, NSS and NCA Extra Academic Courses for 1 Credit so that we can have involvement in Sports and Extracurriculars as well. Along with this in our Institute every year there is General Championship for every field whether its a sport or a technical skill like product design, in which every year students take participation enthusiatically. Here most of the Societies and Clubs are run by Students. Like GYWS which is a student run NGO, which works for economically backward children in different parts of india. There is Computer Graphics Society, which works on Game Developement and Computer Graphics, they also compete on global level, then we have Shaurya as well which organises the inter-collegiate sports fest for students which incraeses their potential in sports as well.
Hostel Facilities
There is a fan, a bed, a table and a chair provided in the room per person, you have to buy other things like mattress, pillow etc. on your own. The quality of meal here is average to poor in mess, even sometimes you have to compromise with hygiene as well, So I will suggest that always keep money so that you can get food from canteens or restaurants when you don't like the food. We have Special Dinners and Grand dinners as well, here you get delicious and good quality dishes but they charge very high for that. The registration process is simple after coming here for Document verification, you have to fill a form and submit to the hall office after which you will get allotted a room. It depends on the respective halls, whether they are affordable or not as fee varies with hall, but in case of LBS I think its highly affordable as per sem fee is 40k.
Admission
I also had selected the IIT BHU CSE and IIT KGP MNC but my rank didn't cross the threshold for these so that's why I chose the best for me which was IIT KGP B.Tech. in E&ECE. I was also getting CSE in IIT Dhanbad but I do not have that much interest in CSE, but obviously if I would've got CSE in colleges like IIT BHU, I would've certainly chosen it due to their placements and exposure. The Admission process in IIT Kharagpur is similar like other IITs. First of all crack JEE Advanced and get a good rank to clear the cut-off rank for the Dream Branch you're willing to get (Take previous year ranks as reference), like for E&ECE in IIT KGP Last year closing rank for general in round 5 of JOSAA Counselling was 1448. Apply for Seat allocation on Josaa lock the seats you prefer the most. Once you get a confirmed seat You will get provisional offer letter from josaa, download that. Then collect all the documents needed for Admission in IIT Kharagpur like Xth Marksheet, XIIth Marksheet, Caste Certificate(if applicable) etc. you can check these documents in UG Admission Module given at IIT KGP website. Then Come here in the campus and get the Physical Document verification completed and also one of the halls like LBS for Freshers will be allotted to you and here you now officially you're a kgpian. In my case the Josaa just created some problems like payment updation on websites otehrwise the document verification was very smooth.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is on an avg 1 faculty per 20-25 students. The faculties as I said here are very kind and polite and are always there to help us in anything, so obviously they are highly approchable. Dr. Sarang Pendharker sir is one of Professors whom I liked the most here yet, one reason is that he is my FacAd and had helped me in Fee Submission problem in the last sem and had gave me the right guidance. Another reason is his teaching method, he was our EME prof and he always tried us not to memorize any formula or theory instead understand things in deep, he always tried to show the python simulation to visualise things when required, and obviously he is also highly qualified and knowledgeable. Till Now I haven't found any faculty whom I don't like, but there is some behaviour from some professors which I didn't like such as not allowing students to go medical checkup in lab hours. The exams and curricula in my department are very tough and challenging, we have to study whole day and night sometimes to prepare, but even after that most of the students make it to pass, as we alraedy have cleared world's one of the toughest exam JEE Advanced. Passing percentage is almost 98-99% but still you have to grind for that. The curricula is almost aligned with the industry and research aspects but sometimes professors go so deep in lectures that it makes it a little of irrelavant with respect to course and industry but are good things for learning purpose if you want to go into research. Apart from this everything is fine and you can understand this from our placements as well.
Interview Experience
There wasn't any GD or interview round for the admission. Give JEE Mains and clear the cut-off to appear for JEE Advanced then get a Good rank to clear the closing rank of IIT Kharagpur, taking previous years closing rank as reference. Then apply on JOSAA portal for seat allocation, and Choose and lock your preference of IIT Kharagpur with the Best and practical branches that you might get, Be careful while locking. Then after getting the college, confirm your seat and pay all the fees. After this you will get initial intimation and Provisional offer letter from JOSAA. And then after this you have to make account on ERP IIT KGP where you will get allotted a Hall and also will get your Institute Email ID, if you're a UG Student then LBS will get allotted. You have to submit all required documents like Xth Marksheet, XIIth Marksheet, Caste/EWS/OBC Certificate in acceptable formate of IIT Kharagpur. And after these things you will have to pay your Autumn Semester FeeAnd this you have to come here at the campus with one of your parents or guardian for physical document verification. Here you have to fill the forms of hall as well for allotment of room. Then after Doc Verification you will be officially enrolled in IIT KGP and become a Kgpian.
Night Life
We have Gyms in respective halls as well as in our Gymkhana, there is no fixed timing for Gym in halls and you have to take slots for Gym in Gymkhana and also pay for it while Gym in Halls are free, people use Gym for Maintaining their fitness and perform well in Competitions like GC and Inter IIT. There is no timing for halls to close or open any boarder can come in and go out anytime. There are many cafeterias, Canteens and restaurants where you can get affordable food, in which Food City is one of the most affordable and RK and RPs Canteens are one of the most popular. There are many hangout places in the campus in which Students prefer Gymkhana the most, after a day of grinding in the classes, the students roam around in campus in nightouts and they are one of the most enjoyable moments in the campus, apart from Gymkhana there is our main building and Nalanda as well where students gather and share some talks and play games. These activities make close bonds between students.
