- 1. Infrastructure:- Labs are really well equipped, we have some of the best facilities in India. Like supercomputers, Elctronprobe Micrscope and many DST labs. After labs, we have good hostel facilities while few time there may be problems.
- 2. Facilities:- Many of the big names of Food Industry are in campus. Dominos, CCD, Wow Momos, etc. Then, we have vending machine in each hall (hostel) and also have night canteens which works till 3 AM. Sports facilities are really amazing.
- 3. Socities:- There is socities for almost every kind of stuffs. Many of International socities have their braches in the campus. Like - IFSA, 180DC, Enactus, JuniorIB etc. There are also some very serious student's research groups on Cars, UAV, etc
Dislikes
- Over Diversification:- I don't like the idea of the college administartion to diversify themselves so much when things are not working well. We have Education Department, Medical Department, etc.
Course Curriculum Overview
Geophysics has an industry, while physics has no industry. So, I chose it as I was very interested in science. The curriculum is great as it allows us to explore almost anything, be it in geophysics or something else (almost any field - Computer Science, Cryogenics, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Economics, Mathematics, High-Performance Computing, Indian Traditions, etc.) as there are enough electives but when it comes to specific exploration geophysics part some more stuff should be added to tutorials to make us industry ready. Also, the curriculum allows a Semester Away Program, which allows one to have a semester away in any university or industry in the world.

Placement Experience
Placements start in your final year i.e. 5th year of IDD (Integrated Dual Degree) (IDD has been stopped), 4th year BTech/BS students, 2nd year MSc, 2nd year MTech, Research Scholars who have done their defence by February, etc. The placement process starts in August, & first, you have to make your CV. The companies' tests start in October. By December 1, the company's interview process starts, and many people start getting offers and by Dec. 14, placement Phase 1 is over. Then, in January, nearly from the 14th, phase 2 starts. About 2800 students sat for placement season 2024-25. About 1400 students have been placed in Phase 1, and by the end of Phase 2, about 1900 students will be placed through campus placements. This data includes everyone across departments and across courses, including PPOs. However, it doesn't include data from VGSOM (Vinod Gupta School of Management). The highest offer was nearly 2.5 Cr+. This time, it was from the CSE Department, but in the last two years, the highest was from the ECE department. The average is nearly 18 LPA. Profiles that are offered include core roles ( every department has its core roles like Law Schools have Corporate Lawyers or Patent Agents, the Chemical Department has a core role as a Chemical Engineer, the Mechanical Department has a Mechanical Engineer, etc.), Product roles (Product Management, Product Analyst) (*This year product roles were very less), Consulting roles (Management Consulting), Business Analyst roles, Finance roles (Corporate Finance, Investment Analyst, Equity Researcher, Quantitative Researcher, Trading, etc.), Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineering, Software Development roles, etc. The maximum number of roles is for software, about 40%. I am trying to establish a business.
Fees and Financial Aid
Tuition Fees - Rs. 100000 Registration - Rs. 400 Laboratory Contingency - Rs. 800 Electricity and Water Charges - Rs. 1000 Internet Connectivity - Rs. 600 Medical Registration - Rs. 200 Hostel Seat Rent - Rs. 750 Technology Film Society - Rs. 100 Students Gymkhana - Rs. 600 Student Amenities Rs. 800 Hall Budget - Rs. 2110 Hall Establishment Fees - Rs. 15125 Mess Charges - Rs. 14500 Hostel Overhead Charges - Rs. 730 There are numerous scholarships available, but each one has some criteria. Many have criteria for category, and some have for department and CGPA. Many of them are for POR holders. There are over 50+ scholarships that can be availed.
Campus Life
The campus has multiple fests. Many departments have their own fest, and many societies have their own fest. However, the flagship fests are Kshitiji (Official Techno-Management Fest of IIT Kharagpur) and Spring Fest ( Official Cultural Fest of IIT Kharagpur). Both of them happen in January. Many competitions happen, inviting guests and participants from all over the country and a few from across the world. Guests are generally entrepreneurs, scientists, singers, professors, corporate leaders, etc. IIT Kharagpur has one of the largest libraries in India. It gives not only physical copies of books but also access to many resources like Grammarly, perplexity, etc. However, it does not provide access to all famous scientific journals. Almost all the classes in the Nalanda (Classrooms Complex) have AC. Almost all of them are projectors. The same is the case with Department Classrooms. Many professors provide their PPTs and notes after the class, but many don't. International Olympic-size pools for swimming, badminton courts, tennis courts (lawn), hockey grounds, basketball courts, and football grounds are there. Then, we have a big stadium called Tata Sports Complex where cricket and football are being played, but it is not of international size. The campus has many student communities. They are mainly divided into four groups: Societies, Clubs, RGs, and Cells. Clubs are more informal, and they generally don't have annual events. They are just groups who tend to bond over a common topic. Societies are more formal, and they generally have an annual event. RGs (Research Group) are a student community which is working on some research topics like Robosoccer is working on robotics, ARK is working on Aerial Robotics, etc. Cells are very formal structures. They have two parts, one from the administration side and one from the students' side. They have a particular task to do. Like IR Cell is focuse on increasing International exposure.
Hostel Facilities
New Halls (Hostels) rooms have ACs and tiles, but most of the old halls have just very basic rooms. Meal quality varies according to the hall (hostel) a lot. Azad, RK, and RP have good food. Hostels are available for almost all Bachelor's peeps, Master's peeps and Research Scholars. But, sometimes it is tough for Post Docs and Project associates
Admission
In counselling, I filled 15 choices, and I got my 7th choice. I was getting the 6th choice also, but before that, I chose it because my 6th choice was IIT Kanpur Earth Science, which is very academically heavy and also, their department is relatively new. Also, they teach a lot of geochemistry and paleobiology, which wasn't my interest. I didn't get any of the choices in my top 5 as my JEE rank was nearly 9000. Admission process is through JEE Advanced. On the basis of your rank, you fill in choices in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority counselling. Then, there happens the mock round, which tells about your possible outcome in getting the seat according to the choices you have made. Then you need to submit the fees, & and the particular institute's process starts. Important documents, including a health certificate from a doctor, a category certificate, a 12th result, a Character Certificate, etc., are required for counselling. Eligibility of JEE Advanced is:- The age Limit is 25 years ( let's say you are appearing in 2025 then your birth should be after October 2000) The Aspirant should have just appeared for class 12th or appeared for it one year before. You should have cleared JEE M.
Faculty
Faculty Student Ratio - 950/16000. This data includes the PhDs also. For most of the department, since the batch strength is nearly 100+, they don't have any personal relationships while teaching, but if you choose to do your final year project or some research project under him/her, then you can establish personal relationships with professors. Then, they help you in every possible way if the bond is good & you did a good job. I like Prof. Sunandan Ghosh from the HSS department as he teaches so well; he taught us economics. I like Prof. Kritika Banerjee; I did a project under her supervision, and she is a very nice person. I like Prof. S P Sharma. He is the HOD of our department, and he is so clear with concepts, and his understanding is just immense. He is so passionate about the subject. He has done a really good job in his research area. If you ask anyone in India in the Geophysics Scenario, do you know Prof. S K Nath? He will nod yes, but then if you ask how he is as a person, He will say 'Narcissist'. Everyone knows him, but no one likes him. He enjoys troubling people. He has very, very high academic credentials. He is a Bhatnagar Awardee (the highest science award in India) but very bad as a person. If he ever reads my answer, he will laugh as if he has achieved something. He is very arrogant and treats students as animals. Exams are a function of your department, subjects and professors. Many exams need more than a couple of weeks of preparation, while some just need a day's preparation. If you really want to do well in Probability and Statistics (2nd Year Course is almost compulsory for all BTech Peeps), you need to start early. Specifically, Geophysics, Seismic Method, Seismology, and Signal Processing were tough, as Prof. S K Nath taught them. For Probability and Statistics nearly 200 people fail out of 1800 and for Seismology nearly 50% of peeps failed during Nath si.r's tenure
Night Life
Many hostels have their own gym, and there is a central gym that has a fee. 2.2 is a big closed curve around which almost all the halls (hostels) are located. It is a very famous spot for walking. Then, just outside the campus, there is chedis and tapri which serve a good tea and snacks If you are a campus student, you are not allowed to go outside the campus after 23:00 IST until you have a train or something urgent. But you can come inside almost any time. There is no (hall) hostel timings. You can roam in campus.
