Course Curriculum Overview

3

It's fair to say that the course curriculum is outdated to much of it's extent. Many techniques that we learn throughout the course is obsolete in this era of precise GPS tracking method. Also, since this course depends heavily on large amount of data, a subject regarding Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning specialized to Geology and Geophysics should be started in order to frame a better and relevant curriculum. These above stated issues are addressed for those who have interest in higher academics and research purposes. But the basic fundamentals of the subject is thoroughly taught and is useful for core industries. It surely helps in placements in core companies like schlumberger, exxonmobil etc. The timeframe of each semester is short (around 4 months). So, it's quiet difficult for slow learners to cope with the pace.

Internships Opportunities

3

MNC like google, facebook, amazon take interns under multiple roles including Quant, SDE (Software Developement Engineering), DSA (Data Structure and Algorithm), AI/ML (Artificial intelligence/ Machine Learning). Core companies for our branch such as Schlumberger, exxonmobil take reservoir engineers and other geoengineering branches. I am in my second year. Internship application starts from third year. But some of my seniors have got internships, majority of them in non core companies.

Placement Experience

2

The applications for placements generally start from the start of the graduating year. The core companies that visit are- schlumberger, exxonmobil, reliance, and other ONGC companies. For non-core placement almost all of the notable companies like fakebook, google, microsoft, goldmann&sachs and many more come. The highest packages can be as much as 1 crore. But median package is around 15-16 LPA. 70% to 80% of students of all branches get placed. Placement ratios in BS courses and lower branches are comparatively lesser. My plan after getting this degree would be to do MBA from any of the top IIMs. Otherwise if the subject really suits my research interest I can go for research in foreign universities.

Fees and Financial Aid

The total fees per semester is around 1.5 lakh including Hostel, Mess and Tution fees. Other excess costs are also involved in frequent basis such going out with friends to have food elsewhere rather than mess or giving treat to close friends during birthday or any career achievement. Per semester Tution fees in every 4yrs-BTech, 4yrs-BS, 5yrs Integrated BTech-MTech Dual, 5yrs Integrated BS-MS Dual Degree courses is 1,00,000 for general and OBC candidates(except for EWS category students) and full Tution fee waiver for SC/ST students. There are various types of scholarships that the institute provide, but majority of the scholarships are reserved for the EWS and SC/ST students. The INSPIRE SHE scholarship is one of the scholarships that can be availed by students who are pursuing BS course. It is funded by Central Government. There are some eligiblity criteria to pass, but the scholarship is well funded.

Campus Life

5

The largest fest of this campus is spring fest. It is asia's lasges It is celebrated in the last week of january. Other than this, Kshitij (tech fest) and Shaurya (sports fest) also take place on the month of january. The range of academic materials is truly vast. But special online acess to many major journals and magazines is not there. Classrooms are well ventilated, air conditioned and spacious. Proper hygine is and regular cleaning are maintained in washrooms and corridors. There are a vast amount of sporting facilities all over the campus. every hall is equipped with many number of grounds one ground for each major sport. Other than this, Tata Sporting Complex, Jnan Ghosh Stadium are also good spaces for regular physical workouts. You can show your talent inter IIT meets and General Championship (GC) held every year. The scocieties such as AWAAZ, E=CELL, TEAMKART are some of the famous societies of KGP. They prepare you and polish your managerial andd leadership skills.

Hostel Facilities

4

The room in the hostel are suffeciently provided with bed, desk, a cupboard and 3 charging slots per person. Room accomodation varies from one person, two person to upto 3 persons in a room. AC is not currently available in UG hostels. as said earlier, meals are not tasteful. Although they give attention to the quality of every ingredients the use. The process of registration to hostel is straightforward. Everything is done through your IITKGP ERP profile. The hostel fees is reasonable for what facilities they provide.

Admission

I got chance in Jadavpur University (Electrical Engg.), IIST, and IISER Pune. Now that I think about the job security aspect of these different choices, going IIST would have been the best decision, then JU (Electrical) and then this. I took a risk in choosing this. But I have no repentence, as I should not. Risky decision is not a bad choice, but mourning over it is. Here, I constantly get a very knowledgable peer group, a strong alumni circle and good, helpful seniors. There is a lot of scope to flourish at your own will for your desired goal. But the simple thing about college life is that, amidst all these hustle, you have to maintain a decent CGPA from the first semester. This is crucial for enjoying a good, stress-free, and productive college life experience.

Faculty

5

I cannot speak for the whole Institute, but the faculties are one the best part of our Department. Every faculty is always ready to help, be it any academic or any other personal problem. They are always enthusiastic about teaching. They try to involve and guide students towards new frontiers of research and also refer good students for internship or higher studies at foreign universities. Some of the Professors' research papers have been published in some of the worlds most prestigious research magazines like nature geoscience and others. But the curriculum is very backdated and in the era of machine learning, and precise GPS technology many of the subjects' topics are becoming almost obsolete to study. But the course curriculum is not so heavy. So, many students opt preparing for non core jobs and many of them gets placed. Core companies also visit. But the intake is very low for our branch.

Night Life

5

the nighttime of kgp is the best. you go out with your friends to roam uncharted territories inside the boundaries of campus. most of the memories are made in this part of campus life. there is no scheduled time of return to hostel as to say. the independence that you have, you can experience it in this nighttime. we generally hangout in some canteen of any hall. otherwise we take our cycles and roam the whole campus gossiping and laughing.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course for the first year is easy overall , maybe challenging for biology students because involvement of Maths in the curriculum but they can decrease their load by practicing Maths problems, asking doubts, approaching the instructors or their personal mentors. Otherwise the course is mixed in a good way with theoretical and practical part. Labs are conducted of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and CS in first year. You can choose CS as an minor in higher classes.

There shoud be more laboratry so that it easy for individual practices. The exam taken in IISER is semester wise with fraction like mid sem and end sem. with the perfect schedule.
