Course Curriculum Overview

3

I had an interest in thermodynamics which led me to choose this course as you learn a lot of heat transfer, thermodynamics etc. There is a lot of misconception that we learn chemistry which is not at all true. The curriculum is quite old, but it is just enough to form the foundations of actual learning that you require to go into research or core industries as a chemical engineer. The examination system is quite tough with students struggling to score 30-40% in most courses. The grading is done according to the class average and is done according to the Gaussian System, with average marks getting a 7 pointer grade.

Internships Opportunities

3

Students can look for internships at any point in their college life through different portals and they should. Companies such as JPMC, Microsoft, Texas Instruments have special programs which they release in months of january-march for 2nd year students through which students can get internship opportunities. Companies visit campus to hire interns during months of july-december. They hire 3rd year students for roles varying from consultant, analyst, software developer etc. The stipends range from 20,000 to 2,50,000 per month for various companies. Companies that visited are Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Accenture, BCG, Amazon, Ebullient Securities etc.

Placement Experience

4

Students have 2 ways to get on-campus placements, first is by getting a PPO after the summer internship which students undertake after completing their 3rd year. A lot variety of companies come for various roles such as software developer, analyst, consultant, technical trainee. The firms such as BCG, JPMC, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, American Express, ITC, HUL offer really good offers. Around 25-30% students overall get summer internships on-campus. The percentage is higher for circuital branches and lower for lower branches. For on-campus placements again a lot of good companies come for similar profiles. Packages as high as 30-40 LPA are offered by some of the big firms. Companies such as Flipkart, Matercard, American Express, Accenture etc offer good packages. Average package is around 13-14 lakhs overall. After the placement season wraps up around 70-75% batch ends up with an offer. Placement analysis for IIT Roorkee is published every year by their Official Students' Media Body, WatchOut! IITR. You can google it to get more specific details. I have got an offer from a good MNC and plan to work as an Analyst after my graduation.

Fee Structure yearly (for every spring + autumn semester combined) : Tuition Fee Rs. 200000 Semester Charges Rs. 6500 Accommodation Charges Rs. 10000 Total (yearly) Rs. 276000 The following scholarships are available: 1. James Thomason Scholarship: Rs. 2,50,00 per year, criteria: AIR>=250 in JEE Advanced and maintain a CGPA>=8.0 2. Heritage Scholarship

Campus Life

5

The overall campus life at IIT Roorkee is nothing short of a dream. The campus has a perfect location in the foothills of Uttarakhand and you can easily on go weekend or even day trips to Rishikesh, Mussorie, Dehradun etc. Some students even go for night trips to these places. The campus has always some event or the other going on there are 1 technical (Cognizance), 1 cultural (Thomso) and 1 sports fest (Sangram) held every year during months of March, November and February respctively. These fests boast a good footfall, concerts and performances by superstars, esteemed speakers and a lot of chance to have fun, learn and network. Other than that many student groups keep organizing summits, workshops and speaker sessions throughout the year. The library has a digital portal where you can easily access a lot of variety of books and even paid international journals for free right from your laptop. The classrooms are equipped with ACs and projectors to facilitate learning.

Hostel Facilities

3

The hostel rooms are given on double sharing in 1st and 2nd year and then single rooms are allotted after that. Rooms have bed, table, chair, fan, lights and curtains. The washrooms are clean and every floor has water coolers. Every hostel mess whose menu keeps changing every week based on the feedback of the students. You mostly get milk, tea, coffee, bread, egg, bananas and a dish like poha/uttapam/dosa/parathas in breakfast; 2 seasonal vegetables, rice, chapati, curd, fruits in lunch and dal, 1 vegetable, rice, chapati, sweet dish in dinner. The quality of food is okay at best on most days, The hostels are compulsory for all students and fee is paid with the tuition fee only. Students aren't allowed to stay in PG until they acquire special permission from DOSW.

Admission

I gave the JEE Mains exam and got 8032 rank in JEE Advanced, which gave me the option to choose between circuital branches in new and small IITs or non-circuital in older and more reknowned IITs. Since, I had no specific interest in any technological field and I really wanted to explore I decided to join an older IIT (IITB, IITD, IITR, IITK, IITKGP, IITM). This was to ensure that I can get a chance to interact with a bigger set of people with wider range of perspectives and experiences. I did not want to go too far from my hometown which is why the final choice came down to between IITR and IITD. I did a bit more research and understood how IITD puts a lot of focus on strict academics and consulting is the major trend there. IITR had very liberal policies and a larger alumni network to boast which would prove crucial in networking. Also, IITR had a bigger student intake along with other departments. For all the above reasons I choose IIT Roorkee. I was quite satisfied with the rank I got in JEE Advanced though I could have scored better if I had not left a few topics like set theory etc. in mathematics which I found tough completely untouched. These topics ended up forming a majority of the JEE Advanced Paper which really affected my score. The admission process for IITs is through JOSAA counselling and the eligibility criteria is clearing JEE Advanced. Though getting a rank in JEE Advanced doesn't ensure you will get a seat. I would recommend students to fill the priority form very carefully and fill all the choices you can consider going to even though you know you will get the upper preferences based on last-year's cutoffs. Try to talk to 3-4 people from the courses and colleges you are thinking of joining, to get a better perspective of things. You can find contacts of these people through instagram posts of different societies.

Faculty

4

The student-to-faculty ratio is as high as 130:1 in earlier years, falling to 30:1 in specialization courses (in 4th year). The faculties are approachable and you can meet them in their offices in the department by asking them for an appointment over mail in advance. The exams are conducted 2 times each semester (mid-terms and end-terms) with regular class assessments. The exams are usually difficult, with no one scoring full marks; sometimes, classes struggle to score even 30-40% score in the end-term examinations. Most students clear the exams with the ones failing having the chance to appear in re-exams and get passing marks. The latest course structure is more relevant according to industry standards after the introduction of NEP for latest batches.

Night Life

5

IIT Roorkee boasts a nightlife which is extremely safe even for female students. You can go out for a walk at 2 a.m. at night and you won't feel it's that late based on the number of people that are up. It's a campus that never sleeps. We have night canteens in all hostels. Library is open 24/7 during examinations. Other than that students mostly prefer to go to CCD or students' club to play Table Tennis/PS5 after the classes to chill. There are common working spaces such as Students' Activity Centre (SAC) where students can work or just chill around. There are multiple eateries just outside the campus and sitting by the Ganga Canal is a good way to unwind. Inside the campus is completely safe at any time. I would not advise to go outside the campus after 8-9 in small groups as it does become risky. There is no in-time for anyone. 1st year students are required to return to their hostels before 8 p.m. during the 1st month of their degree.

Our campus placements are definitely as I mentioned in likes that they are the biggest footing. University has made now a niche for placements as only niche companies are invited because university now has enough tie-ups that placements mark is making a history now. I think GEU is not far off when they will have over 500 companies visiting the campus tp recruit students as currently over 300 companies have come to GEU.

Champion placements or should I say champion stuff by the university in sorting out the placements at GEU. Around 50 internal IT names show up every year and recruit students with massive packages. Even the domestic IT names don't come without offering paypacke of least than 7-8 LPA which is currently the average placements figure at GEU.
