Course Curriculum Overview
During my master's, I felt that the curriculum for some of the papers should have been updated. The curriculum was heavily theoretical. Less emphasis on real-world applications even in the practical classes. They should introduce modern books and softwares for courses such as data analytics with R and Stata. It would be better if they can focus on real-world projects. There were usually two exams in each semester. Sessionals and finals exams. The difficulty level was normal.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees for two years master's programme is Rs. 6500 per year. The following is the detailed fees structure for Master of Arts course in Jamia Millia Islamia: Tuition fee: Rs. 1100 Examination Fee: Rs. 1000 Admission fee: Rs. 100 Library/Lab fee: 300 Games fee: 400 Other charges: 3600 Total fees: Rs. 6500 The fees is same for all categories. Following are some of the scholarships for students: JMI Merit Scholarship Hakeem Abdul Hamid Scholarship CBM Merit Scholarship ONGC Merit Scholarship for SC, ST, OBC, and General students The details are available on jmi.ac.in
Campus Life
My campus life in JMI has been really good. There are a number of annuals fests celebrated in different months around the year. For example, the annual food fest, Cultural Fest, Kerela Fest, Maasiyat, etc. JMI has one of the best university libraries which goes by the name - Zakir Hussain Library. All course books are readily available. Journals are easily accessible through computers in the research section of the library. Most of the classrooms in JMI are smart classrooms with white boards and projector. Every department has a dedicated computers section for working with softwares. There are a number of student run groups across different departments. For example there are departmental students clubs for organising different activities.
Admission
I applied for Aligarh Muslim University other than this college. I got selected in both. But I chose Jamia Millia Islamia because it has placement opportunities. AMU on the other hand has negligible placements in social science departments. I also applied for JNU and DSE. I could not crack their entrance exams. My preparation was not enough. I should have started my preparation earlier under the guidance of someone who has already cracked these exams. The admission process of my college is as follows: 1. Apply for the course 2. Appear for entrance exam 3. Complete the admission counseling process after getting selected The eligibility criteria for my course is that you should have completed graduation in Economics/Statistics/Mathematics etc. If you had other subjects like political science etc. in graduation, you should have studied economics as a subsidiary subject. The overall admission process is smooth.
Faculty
Personally, I felt that the faculty were less approachable than they should be. Although some try their best to serve students in the best possible manner. The faculty-to-student ratio is satisfactory. There are sessional sessional exams and end sem or final exams. The sessionals are for 30 marks. And the finals are for 70 marks. The pattern of the papers in sessional depends entirely on the will of teachers. On the other hand, the finals exams have a fixed pattern which is as follows: Two 5 marks question i.e. 5x2 Two 20 marks questions i.e. 20x2 Two 10 marks questions i.e. 10x2 The level of exams depends on many factors such as the teacher, the subject, and level of teaching.
Night Life
Since JMI is situated in South Delhi, there are a lot of options when it comes to hanging out with friends and classmates after a day of classes. The nearest and most popular destination is CC which stands for Community Center. It is situated near the neighbouring New Friend Colony. The nightlife is really good here. Students can go to different restaurants, or just chill out in the area. There are a number of popular restaurant around the campus specializing in delicious cuisines such as Biryani. Some of the popular restaurants are Zahra, FKC, Al-Nawaz, Roomiez, etc. It is completely safe to roam around the campus till 12 AM at night. But most of the shops usually close around that time. Groups of students usually have fun inside the campus. The reading halls are open till 2 AM.
