What Students Say
Likes
- Gender Ratio: The student population had a balanced 1:1 ratio of boys and girls. Although there was some indirect segregation
- Few good teachers: Some faculty members were supportive and knowledgeable. Their positive teaching methods stood out
- Basic Campus Amenities: The college had the essential infrastructure, such as AC in a few classrooms. Although nothing particular stood out
Dislikes
- Outdated infrastructure: Classrooms had old benches and desks and labs were equipped with outdated computers. Heavy rains caused leaks in some areas.
- Minimal Faculty Support: Many teachers were rude and there was a lack of academic and personal support.
- Poor Placement Services: The placement support was ineffective with mediocre workshops and nothing that helped in genuine career advancement.
Course Curriculum Overview
I didn't research the course much before joining so I can't comment on its specific aspects that influenced my decision. It needs more up-to-date information a. t it was difficult to keep up with assignments and the overall difficulty was moderate.
Fees and Financial Aid
My fee structure at Gauhati Commerce College is broken down year wise. First time admission fees was ?6500. In the first year I paid Admission Fee of ?700. With ?500 being late fees. Centre and exam fee being ?500. For subsequent semesters the fee structure was same with no significant change in amount. Reduction in fee was available to candidates belonging to marginalised sections of society which was to be availed on presenting income statement of family or othe relevant certificates, as per college policy each semester.
Campus Life
My overall campus life experience was minimal. College evens were held. The library offered basic course cirriculum books and resources. Classrooms offered benches, desks, blackboards, computers in labs and few ACs in specific rooms. Basic facilities were offered. Sports and extra curricular acticites were offered but I was not interested to participate in any. There were student elections and student led groups, but I didn't involve myself in any of that and it didn't impact my personal college life explicity.
Admission
I applied to a few other colleges, received admissions from some, but things didn't go as planned leading me to this college. The initial admission registration process was fully online, requiring the submission of relevant details and documents, later confirmation in the college office. During my time, the admission was based on 10th and 12th board scores. I am not aware of the current exams or cutoffs used for admission now.
Faculty
The faculty to student relationship at my college was distant and professors didn't feel approachable. I didn't feel comfortable asking for help and I didn't know any faculty members personally. Each semester had one internal exam and one final exam. The exams were of moderate difficulty- technical subjects posed more challenges while theory subjects were comparitively easier. I heard of some students struggling to clear exams. Unfortuntely, the course cirriculum was outdated, and didn't align with real-world problems, leaving gaps in preparation of my career goals.
