What Students Say
Likes
- Plethora of clubs and chapters and festivals like Riviera (cultural fest) and Gravitas (technical fest)
- Excellent placement record and companies like Amazon, Microsoft, TCS and many others recruit from the campus
- Fully Flexible Credit System and research opportunities
Dislikes
- Campus rules and restrictive curfew timings for hostellers
- The Girl-to-Boys Ratio is skewed with more boys then girls on campus. A common estimate is around 70:30
- Placement opportunities are more favourable for CS/IT students than for core engineering branches
Course Curriculum Overview
The Mechanical engineering program is designed to cover both foundational concepts (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics) and emerging areas (automation, robotics, renewable energy) The curriculum integrated internships and project work which help apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Incorporating more subjects on automation, IoT and sustainable technologies could align with future industry demands. Core mechanical subjects can be challenging but majority of weightage of marks come from internal assessments like assignments and quizzes which reduces exam pressure.
Internships Opportunities
Companies like Microsoft, Google, Intel, Samsung and TCS come during placements. Roles offered: Software developer intern, data analyst intern, hardware engineering intern, research intern Stipend: Varies from Rs 15000 to Rs 50000 per month Internships are typically advertised through the college's placement cell, career services and sometimes through direct company tie-ups The selection process often included application screening, interviews and sometimes technial tests or assignments.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placements from the 7th semester. Pre-placement offers are also common for students who intern at companies in the 6th semester. Top recruiters include core mechanical companies like Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, L&T and Siemens as well as tech companies like Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Accenture and Amazon. Highest package in mechanical is around Rs 25-30 LPA and average package is around Rs 5-8 LPA. In mechanical engineering, the placement percentage is slightly lower compared to branches like CSE but still respectable at around 80-85% After completing my degree, I plan to explore roles in automotive engineering. If I secure a core mechanical job through campus placements, I'll likely gain some industry experience. I am also considering pursuing a Master's degree abroad.
Fees and Financial Aid
Tuition fee: Rs 304000 per year Caution deposit (refundable): Rs 3000 Registration fee: Rs 5000 Admission fee: Rs 10000 Development fees: Included in tuition fee Lab fees: May vary based on course requirements, often included in tuition Hostel fees: Rs 70000 to Rs 250000 SC/ST Category: There may be fee concessions, depending on government or university policies GVSDP Scholarships: 100% scholarship for VITEEE Rank 1-50 75% scholarship for VITEEE Rank 51-100 50% scholarship for VITEEE Rank 101-1000 Toppers of state board and central board: Full tuition fee waiver for four years Merit cum means scholarship: Available based on financial need and merit The fee structure tends to increase slightly every year
Campus Life
VIT Vellore boasts a rich array of student-run clubs and chapters like The Fine Arts Club, Dance club, Music club, Toastmasters, Literary associations etc. VIT hosts: Riviera (Cultural fest): Held in February Gravitas (Technical fest): Held in October The library at VIT has extensive collections of numerous books, journals and e-resources. It has a digital library and spacious study rooms for both individual and group study Classrooms in VIT are equipped with projectors and interactive whiteboards. They have well-maintained labs for various disciplines. Sports facilities include cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, karate and more. Paid as well as free gyms and fitness centre are available for students. Student and parent portal called VTOP provides academic, monetory information and campus news.
Hostel Facilities
Room facilities: Single/Shared rooms Furniture Basic amenities like lights, fans and air conditioning Internet access Laundry services CCTV surveillance Mess quality: Differs from caterer to caterer. Darling and Neelkesh messes have excellent quality and taste of food whereas Proodle has the worst taste. North Indians might struggle to find palatable dishes related to their hometown. Room allocation is done based on merit (hostel rank) and availability. Hostel rank is determined based on your CGPA and branch. The cost of hostel accomodation is relatively reasonable comapred to other private institutions.
Admission
I applied to multiple colleges including IITs, NITs, SRM, KIIT and Manipal but I ultimately chose VIT Vellore for: 1) FFCS System at VIT was a major ftor in my decision. This system allows studentd to choose their own subjects, professors, classmates and schedule each semester. 2) Compared to other private insititutes, VIT's placement office has a reputation for attracting a wider range of recruiters and offering higher salary packages. 3) VIT'S campus life and infrastrucutre was another big attraction. I aimed for IITs and NITs but the cutoffs in JEE Main and JEE Advanced were extrememly high. Although I had a good rank it wasn't enough to secure admission in the branches or campuses I wanted. For VIT, I had to appear for the VITEEE entrance exam. The exam pattern had sections in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Logical Reasoning. The admissio experience was smooth and I found the online counseling process clear and efficient.
Faculty
Faculty-to-Student Ratio: 1:50 to 1:70 Most faculty are approachable with regular office hours and email responses Notable professors: Prof. Edwin Sudhagar and Prof. Ashish Kumar are often appreciated for their dedication and student-friendly approach Less Liked Faculties: No specific names but students have reported that a few faculty members from core branches like civil or electrical engineering can be a rigid in their teaching approach who focus too much on theory and not as interactive. Exam structure: Typically there are 3 main exams per semester CAT 1 and CAT 2 (Continuous Assessment Test) - 15% weighatge each FAT (Final Assessment Test) - 40% weightage Internals- 60% weightage The difficulty of exams varied based on the subject. Core subjects especially in mechanical and electrical engineering can be challenging. Most students pass the exams. The failure rate is minimal. VIT follows a 10-point GPA system.
