- The college provides a strong alumni network and it also hosts several events and mentorship sessions with the alumni. They even support student startups and provide guidance.
- Various Placement and internship opportunities with industry level stipends.
Dislikes
- Extreme study pressure. Sometimes there are 2-3 exams per day along with multiple assignment deadlines which becomes very stressful.
- The hostel infrastructure, despite being functional, is outdated and in need of renovation. I faced severral issues during my time here such as water leakage, poor ventilation etc.
- Politics during elections for several boards or clubs is very corrupt and people with close connections to previous members are given priority.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because of my interest in research work. The difficulty level of this course is medium to difficult. Two exams are held over a period of 4 months along with some quizzes or assignments depending upon the professor. This cirriculum is based for students who want to pursue higher studies in physics. It gives a basic idea about every domain in physics like quantum mechanics, optics, semiconductors, superconductivity, high energy physics. It helps the students to decide their interest. I would suggest including some coding courses would help many students as most of them opt for software jobs and this would reduce their burden of doing two courses at the same time.
Internships Opportunities
Though less than placements, but there is a bulk of companies that come for internships. These include Google, Microsoft, JPMC, Goldman sachs, Micron, Quadeye, Nestlé, Nvidia etc. these all provide industry levels stipends for software jobs. Companies like Google, Microsoft hire at stipend of about one lakh per month. For data analyst roles, companies like JPMC, Barclays hire at a similar stipend. For consult roles companies like BCG, McKensey hire at a stipend of about 1.5 lakhs per month. For core jobs, companies like micron, Texas instruments, higher at an average stipend of 50,000 per month. My internship was with micron technologies. My role was to apply the concepts of CFD to solve capillary underfill problem in chip packaging. I had to visualise the flow of the underfill between the chip and the substrate and to predict any air voids.
Placement Experience
The students are eligble for the placements at our college when they enter 4th year or 7th semester. Various companies like Google, Sony, Samsung, Micron, Microsoft, JPMC etc come for placements with about more than 5 offers on average. The highest offer offered this year is 2.4 CRpa by Optiver to about 20 students for a quantitative analyst role. Other companies like Micron offers 31LPa for core job in mechanical. Goldman Sachs offers about 37Lpa for a software engineer. Bcg offers 18Lpa for consulting role. About 80% students were placed last year but this is expected to rise this year. My plan after this degree is to do job in core field.
Fees and Financial Aid
For general category, the tution fees is 2.5 LPA. The hikes are not frequent and the fees structure doesn't change much over the years. The last hike in the fees of IITs was in 2016 and since then it has been the same. The complete cost of my education would be about 15L including the mess and hostel fees and other miscellaneous charges. There are several scholarships available for students which are directly sponsored by alumni but they have some conditions such as they should be of a particular hostel, or they must have good cgpa or their parental income should be less than certain amount etc. I did an internship in Micron Technology in 3rd year as PDE PDS intern with a stipend of 50k per month. My job was to solve a CFD problem of capillary underfill flow in chip packaging.
Campus Life
Rendezvous, north India's largest cultural fest is hosted by IIT Delhi in the month of October for a period of three days. The college hosts several renowned personalities, artist, singers, stand-up comedians who add glamour to the event. There are several events that take place such as fashion shows, talent hunt, dance and music, competitions et cetera. Many sporting events take place throughout the year, such as inter IITs, inter hostel GC in several sports like cricket, football, basketball et cetera. There are several clubs at IIT Delhi, such as EDC, NSS, physics and astronomy club et cetera. There is a wide variety of books that is available in the library Ranging from history to biography to literature to physics. The classrooms are equipped with centralised AC and projector screens along with the comfortable sitting arrangement.
Hostel Facilities
IIT provides hostel at affordable fees of just ?8000 per semester. The Mess fees is about 30,000 per semester which cost around 200 per day which I think is affordable. The meal quality is however moderate but the menu is very diverse with dishes from north india, south india, street food, deserts etc. Registration for hostel is done along with tuition fees submission. The room has a bed, a table, a chair, fan and tubelight, one cupboard and a rack mounted on the wall
Admission
To get into IITD, I gave Jee mains and after qualifying it I gave Jee advanced. Application form for these can be found on the official NTA site and Josaa site respectively. The Mains exam is easy to medium in difficulty level with single type correct and integer type questions while advanced is hard in difficulty level with its format unpredictable having multiple choice, single choice, math the columns, integer type questions. Advanced is a six hour exam which occurs in 2 sessions of 3 hours each on the same day. Cutoff for mains exam was about 89% in 2021.
Faculty
The faculty at IITD is excellent with professors being graduated from esteemed institutions like IITs, NITs, IISC and most of them having done their phd's from ivy league colleges. The professors focus more on the practicality of the subject rather than theoretical aspects. Knowing where one could apply the knowledge they gained through a course helps in deeper understanding of the concepts. We can interact with the faculty after class or by mailing them and getting a time to meet them. They are more than happy to assist us with our every problem.
