What Students Say?
Likes
- The college has a relatively good infrastructure. Spacious classrooms and labs, a library complex with a separate reading hall.
- A very healthy competitive environment among students that's subtle but always present.
Dislikes
- College Fest is not what exactly how I had heard about.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose CSE here at SMIT because I come from CSE Background and have attended many events like workshops and Seminars here previously. Plus for me the option to take AI, Cyber security, etc as Minor Specialization was another point that brought me here.
Placement Experience
The placement cell is very active and well equipped to bring recruiters from diverse group of organisations. The pre final and final year students are allowed to sit for interview. The highlight this year for me was Mercedes Benz hiring a student from Mechanical Department giving a very high package. A good chunk of people get placed every year. I am also looking forward to placement opportunities on campus, I believe there'll be enough opportunities.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
The college provides multiple fee waiver schemes based on your previous academic achievements and other criteria. Also one can avail state quote in case of Sikkim State Students. I got 40% fee waived due to my marks from UG Diploma, I think the criteria has been updated now but still such schemes do exist.
Campus Life
Experience here at SMIT can be a very different one for people coming from urban areas but with time the calm and rather silent environment starts making impressions that last for a long time if not lifetime. The surrounding area is fairly urbanized and one may find some pubs and bars around. There are decent restaurants and hang out venues. There are ample number of getaways, the college is in Sikkim - you'll always have places to explore. As far as student clubs are concerned, they're as mediocre as they can be in a place filled late teenagers and early 20s people.
Admission
Since I am a Lateral Entry student, I didn't have to go through any entrance or cutoff system. But for regular admissions JEE scores are accepted, college conducts its own test called SMET. As far as I know SMET is not very tough and it is conducted once a year during the admission season.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is good. As far as our branch (CSE) is concerned we do have qualified and talented teachers with their own ways of teaching which I find helpful. Teachers are very receptive and always there to help. The mentors assigned to us regularly check on us.
Interview Experience
I didn't face any of these for my admission as I was a Lateral Entry Student with a good enough score. For my admission, I filled up the inquiry form on the college website and soon I was assigned a guide teacher who literally did everything for me. I just had to pay 50k to reserve my seat which I did very early in January 2023 and then I just directly came for admissions in August.
