Review of NIT Sikkim

More or less the students chose their courses as per their interest, career oppurtunities are there for each and every courses being at NIT Sikkim and is very much relevant with the current scenario as even being the core departments of Electrical, Mechanical and Civil, students gets the exposure of courses like AI/ML, Data Science and some basics of Coding as well.

Internship oppurtunities are provided every year at NIT Sikkim in top notch companies like Infinion, Cummins, Vedanta, NHPC, ONGC, IOCL, SLB, Neenopal, Dharaksha Ecosolutions and many others having an average stipend of 15k-10k per month

If you are capable enough you will be getting decent placements, Overall placement statistics lies about 80-90% with an average pacakage of 9-10 lacs per annum including 90-95% for CSE, ECE. EEE and almost 80-85% for core branches like Mechanical and Civil. Some of major past recruiters are CDAC, CDOT, BEL, VEDANTA, DELOITTE, MAHINDRA, MARUTI SUZUKI, UKG, GENPACT, BPCL, L&T, ALSTOM, NVIDIA, MICROSOFT, SLB, TERADATA, CGI and many others. Highest pacakage for the batch of 2023-24 was 44 LPA by NVIDIA and average was around 9.95 LPA. From start of the 7th semesters , the students can register themselves for placements and from 5th semester onwards student can register themselves for internship opputunities. NIT Sikkim also provide opportunities of highes studies like PhD from reputed institutes like IIT Hyderabad, IIT Delhi and some other prominent institutions as well.

Total fees without any exemption is Rs 141086 per annum for Btech course where as college also provide the exemption in fees depending on the annual family income if less than 1 lakh then the total fees is around Rs 16k per annum and if annual family income lies in between 1 lac to 5 lac then total annual fees is around Rs 70k. Total fees include tuition fees which is exempted for SC/ST students and students whose annual family income is less than 1 lac for rest of the students it varies as per the annual family income if more than 1 lac and less than 5 lac then annual tuition fee is Rs 41668 and if annual family income is more than 5 lac then it is Rs 125000 annualy. Other fees included in total fee is examination, library, laboratory, internet, mediacl OPD, insurance and Training and placement fee which is in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 1000 annualy. Institute also provide scholarships for meritorious students, Some of the scholarships provided are Nation Scholarship Program(NSP), SDEF Scholarship Program, Some scholarships for SC/ST Candidates and state scholarships for students of their respective native state.

Overall exeperience was fine as NIT sikkim is located at a place where tourists suppose to visit , there are so many places around the campus where you can enjoy on weekends with friends and family as well. NIT Sikkim host Udgam which is annual cultural fest and Abhiyantran which is annual tech fest. Every classroom is well equipped with the smartboards and smart classrooms with projectors as well. Interms of sports facilities we have seperate vollyball, basketball , kho-kho, fotball ground in the campus itself, Badminton is also there which is used by students and faculties as well. NIT Sikkim conducts annual sports fest every year and also encourage students to participate in annual sports fest of some other IITs/NITs across the country. Some of the student run clubs are Cultural club, Departmental clubs like yantrika, anuvrat etc

As NIT Sikkim is still operating from a temporary campus, hostel facilities are not as per the other NITs, Students are forced to live in a 5 bedded sharing rooms, where 5 table, 5 chairs, 5 almirahs, 5 beds are provided for each students but it becomes very tough to follow the individual routine. Mess food quality is poor and the only reason institute state is RAVANGALA IS VERY REMOTE LOCATION.

As per my JEE Mains rank, NIT Sikkim was the college i was getting along with some other NITs in north east for core branches and some other NITs in lower branches. I chose NIT Sikkim as it is located in a very scenic location in the state of sikkim and it is not very far from my home town. I got Mechanical Engineering which i wanted to pursue to it was also a major point in selecting this college. I applied to the same course of some other NITs as well but as per my JEE Rank this was the option i was getting through the counselling. Mode of admission to NIT Sikkim is you need to clear a national level examination called Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains the as per your scorecard you need to apply for JOSAA counselling followed by CSAB special round counselling. Cutoff is about 97 percentile for students belonging from general catory but there is reservation for Home state students as 50% of the seats at every NIT is reserved for students belonging from the native state of NIT where it is located and some other reservations are also there for EWS/OBC/SC/ST candidates.

Faculty to student ratio is almost 1:10 that means on every 10 students there is 1 faculty and in terms of the approachibilty of the professors they are easily available around the campus and very supportive in nature for your academic and Non academic doubts as well. Some of the famous faculties are Dr Dhananjay Tripathi Sir, Dr. Anil Lal S, Dr. Debajit Saha, Dr, Biswajit Roy, Dr. Aurobinda Panda, Dr. Joy Pal, Dr. Ranjan Basak, these all professors are very helpful and friendly in behavior with the students and very much approachable to students as well. For every subject in a semester there will be two mid term exams will be there of 15 marks each and major end term exam will be there of 50 marks which comprises to 80 marks and rest of the 20 marks are decided by respective faculty handling the course like 20 marks comprises of assignment, viva, attendence etc. This is same for every subject across all the semesters.

No GD, Interview was taken for admission. Admission is done only on the basis of rank scored in JEE Mains examination which occurs twice every year and best among those two examinations was used to take admission at any of the NIT/IIT.

Gym is there for boys, For girls as of now Gym facility is not there. Canteen is located inside the insitute where you can have a nice evening spending time with friends after classes or examinations. Hostel in time is 8PM for both boys and girls but is strictly follwed for girls only.
