What Students Say
Likes
- The college is situated in a serene and beautiful location from where snow capped mountains are visible and the climate is extremely pleasant for the majority of the year.
- The infrastructure and the campus is beautiful with lush green forest covering large part of the campus. The campus area is spread in 317 acres of land and the architecture of most of the buildings is very good.
- There are many events throughout the year which will keep you busy and occupied. The cultural and technical fests are one of the if not the best in the whole state and attracts students from neighbouring institutes.
Dislikes
- The hostel and mess facilities needs to be really improved and worked upon. The three and four seater rooms till third year are small to fit in these many people and you only get your individual room in the final year.
- The hostel in timings and restrictions for the first year students are very harsh and feels a bit much sometimes. Some relaxations need to be made in this are. After the first year there is a lot leniency for the students.
- It is a vehicle free campus and even bicycles are not allowed in the campus area hence it sometimes becomes too exhausting to migrate inside the campus. The public carts are very less as compared to the number of students studying.
Course Curriculum Overview
The computer science and engineering degree is very relevant and the job prospects are excellent considering the current scenario. Though the degree is relevant, what they teach in the classes may not be that much. You will need to acquire the skills from other sources on the internet but don't worry there will be plenty of guidance from the very kind seniors and even your batchmates. Coming to the exams, in each semester there are 2 major examinations apart from internal tests. They are moderate and one week of study is quite sufficient for the same. You can easily get around 8 CGPA which is enough to sit in the on-campus placements. Also, you will have ample time to work on the skills requisitory for the job you aspire for.
Internships Opportunities
The students have to struggle themselves to find good internships. You will get a lot of good guidance from your seniors. There are internship opportunities from the third year mostly in both tech and nontech fields however the majority of the internships are in tech fields. Students can get up to 20-25 thousand stipends if they possess the required skills and resume.
Placement Experience
The students start applying and interning for companies in their third year from the fifth semester and are eligible for campus placements from the seventh semester onwards. Around 40 companies visited the college for on-campus placements and the highest package offered was 52 LPA. The average and median packages offered were around 13.7 LPA and 12.8 LPA and the majority of the packages offered were in the IT sector apart from some management and quant jobs. Some of the major companies visited for campus placements include CRED, Philips, Samsung, JP Morgan Chase, and Deloitte among others. Many students opt to pursue higher education mainly through MBA or M.Tech for better career opportunities. Some even go into the government sector. The placement percentage of the college is commendable though the average package does not live up to its expectations being the college an NIT, an institute of national importance.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition and hostel fee plan for the entire course duration will be provided to you in advance; normally, there are no sudden hikes in the fees. You will be required to pay the semester fees every 6 months -- 4 years then 8 semesters. The entire cost of a year B.Tech will be just under 10 lakhs including your hostel, mess, and tuition fees. There are various scholarships both on the financial background and merit basis, the list of all is provided in detail in the scholarship section of NIT Hamirpur website. Many companies visit for the on-campus placements including Samsung, Atlassian, JP Morgan Chase and many more, though they pick a limited number of students. The employment percent stays around 85-90% in all branches as some of the students also opt for higher studies including MBA and M.Tech. The companies offer job in both IT and non IT domains.
Campus Life
The annual cultural fest namely 'Hill'ffair' is a three-day event typically held in the month of October-November. Various performing artists are invited for this celebration and all the college cultural clubs showcase their performances in front of the college. The annual technical fest 'Nimbus' is held in April every year where the technical clubs of the college display their projects and ideas and many guest lectures happen in the course of the three-day event. Apart from these two events, numerous activities and programs are held the whole year which will keep you occupied. Whatever might be your hobby or passion, you will find a club that will entertain your skills and help you grow them. There are all three wings of NCC in the college, the NSS, and various technical clubs. An E-Cell which conducts an entrepreneurship fest every year in the college.
Hostel Facilities
There are typically three or four seater rooms in all the girls and boys hostel till third year after which students get their personal rooms. In the room each student gets a bed, a study table and an almirah and then there is not much space left to keep anything else. One good thing though is that majority of the rooms have balconies where you can dry your clothes and get a nice sunbath in winters. There are badminton courts, gyms, study room and common room in almost all of the hostels apart from which other facilities are very basic. The hygiene is okayish and the meal quality varies greatly from hostel to hostel and from day to day. On an average the mess food is average, something you can survive on. The hostels are very affordable. For both mess and hostel, the semester fees is around thirty thousands.
Admission
You will get admission through JOSAA or CSAB counseling which will be based on your JEE MAIN ranks. Also, you need to have a minimum of 75% marks aggregate in your 12th boards. To get a seat in Computer Science Engineering you need to get under 13-14 thousand rank if you belong to the general category from other state. The lowest branch closes for around 50 thousand ranks. There is a 50% reservation for home-state students and also there are quotas for girls and caste-based categories as well. You can find all the details of the examination and cutoff list on the website of NTA which is the conducting body of the examination.
Faculty
The faculty members are over-qualified, to say the least for their positions however they lack the enthusiasm and will to teach the students. Most of the students prefer to use the online resources to pass the exams. However if anyone is interested or doing a project or some kind of research work or the student himself is willing to take help, the faculty is obliged to do so and assist in any way possible. Otherwise, the majority is comfortable with the system of going to the class for the sake of attendance. The difficulty of the midterm and endterm exams is moderate only. If you have passed the JEE Mains to get admission into the college, you won't find the academics too difficult.
Other Applied Colleges
BITS Pilani (Pilani Campus) | Bachelor of Engineering [BE] (Computer Science)
The return on investment ratio of BITS is not that good. Although the opportunities and college life is one of the best in this college, its high fees and high cutoff makes you think about it whether it is worthy or not.
Malaviya National Institute of Technology - [MNIT] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Electrical Engineering)
I wanted to go for Computer Science course so I decided to compromise college a little bit and opted for a lower NIT to pursue a CS degree.
IIT BHU - Indian Institute of Technology | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Ceramic Engineering)
The placements of this college are good but the hostels are in too bad shape and again I didn't want to compromise on branch for better college.
