Remarks
Government College Karyavattom offers you a unique experience with a mix of academics, politics, sports and cultural activities, molding you into a whole person in general.
Entrance Preview
No reason in particular. I actually had no idea about the colleges in Trivandrum as I am from Kannur. There were very few colleges offering B.Sc Statistics programme and this college happened to be my first choice. It was a pretty good choice considering the faculty, studies, and enjoyment.
Course Curriculum Overview
By the end of 6 semesters, you would have a deep understanding of the subject provided you are diligent and consistent in your studies. The entire course is proportionately divided across semesters and avoids burdening in students. The course curriculum, though not updated regularly, is updated once in a while
Internships Opportunities
Considering it is a government college, it does not provide internships as such as per my knowledge. Students of ASAP need to complete a compulsory 2-month internship during their second year. Other than that, some media channels like Malayala Manorama had reached out to the college with internship opportunities. Other than that, I haven't heard of internships as such.
Placement Experience
Acquiring a degree from the highly deemed University of Kerala does have its own advantages. Even though there aren't any campus placements available, you can always have an upper hand in walk-in interviews. With Technopark and such enterprises in the vicinity, the opportunities are humungous.
College Events
Our college is mostly known for the fests it organizes. We have our Fresher's Day and Welcome Day in August. Then, close to our Onam holidays, we have the Chingam fest which is the second largest fest organized here and is celebrated for two days. On November 1st, on Kerala Piravi day, we have the most awaited and the largest fest, Dhruva, which is our annual cultural fest for a span of 3 days. All fests are organized as competitions between 7 departments ranging from a number of parameters, and the overall winners get the annual Rolling Trophy on College Day. Apart from these, Volleyball, Football, and Cricket matches are also organized.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is extremely feasible. My first-year fee was a mere Rs 2000 and my second-year fee was Rs 1650. This is only because I belong to the general category. My friends who belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes do not have to pay anything. Their education is completely free.
Fees and Financial Aid
No, I haven't heard of any yet. But I think the University offers some scholarships for rank holders.
Hostel Facilities
You get to stay at the university hostel if you wish to live in a hostel. They are pretty big and there are separate hostels for men and women. I've heard that the food is great. But they are at least 45 minutes away from our campus, though stay is absolutely free there. You even get a stipend each month. If you wish to stay closer to the college, there are a lot of Paying Guest facilities available nearby. You need to pay about Rs 5000 for food and accommodation.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network isn't actually great though some alumni visit our college during fests and such.
Exam Structure
Tha University follows a semester-wise exam structure ranging over 6 semesters for each course. Question papers are set by experts of the respective subjects and evaluation is done by all lecturers combined. During the 1st semester, it took almost a whole year for our exams to start, causing further delay in the second semester. Even the evaluation processes get delayed by over a year.
Admission
I applied online using Kerala University's Centralized Allotment Process. I got selected into this college in the 2nd allotment. I had to take admission within a couple of days. I reached the college, filled a form, paid my first year fees which was as low as Rs. 2000 and that too, as I belonged to the General Category. That's it! Very simple.
Faculty
All lecturers are either M Sc or Ph.D. holders in their respective subjects. They have a vast understanding of their area of study and strive hard to make the concepts get imbibed in you. They are some of the best lecturers that you would encounter in Kerala today.
