  • Sometimes, the number of co-curriculars to be organised can get a bit overwhelming, especially for the student council. The short span of time provided for every semester is not conducive to the number of events held.
  • Too strict about attendance. Students are required to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in order to be able to appear for end semester examinations. There are no provisions for accidental and illness related prolonged leaves.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The college follows the curriculum laid down by the University Grants Commission as adopted by the University of Calcutta. The syllabus is extensive and focused. Although the CBCS curriculum of Psychology is a bit theoretical in nature, it prepares students for course-appropriate career options or further studies in the field. The curriculum is divided into specific papers that help students explore their interests. There is room for improvement in the amount of time provided to complete a semester. Although ideally, a semester is supposed to be 6 months long, it is usually reduced in reality to 3-4 months and sometimes even a little over 2 months. The college professors do a wonderful job at teaching, although this dearth of time available often hinders them from exploring topics of interest in greater detail at the risk of not being able to cover the entire syllabus in the short time available. For the CBCS system, examinations are held at the end of every semester.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Tuition fees per semester range from 14,000-17,000, varying from course to course. Courses such as Psychology and Geography have fees for practicals too. Scholarships are available as approved by the Government of West Bengal. Placements are provided by companies like TCS.

Campus Life :

Loreo College has a proactive student body. Renowned for its co-curricular activities that match no other under the University of Calcutta, the college holds events throughout the year. The college has 20 student-run societies. Samagam is the annual inter-collegiate fest hosted by the college, typically held in December. In addition, there are society-specific events such as Kalakriti (by the Psychology Society), Historia (by the History Society), Loreto Shield Quiz (by the Literary Society), Ecolore (by the Economics department) and more cultural and sports events. The college frequently organises workshops and seminars. The classrooms are equipped with projectors and smart-boards. The Computer Lab and the Central Library are always accessible to students. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Admission :

Loreto College is an all-female institution located in Middleton Row, KolkataThe Psychology Department of Loreto College is considered one of the most competitive in Kolkata, with a cut-off of not less than an aggregate of 96-97% (subject to slight changes yearly). Scores were converted into uniform index scores for admissions. The admission procedure was quite smooth with regular updates on the college website making it easier for applicants to track their applications. The application form, application fee information and important dates can all be found on the official college website. The college ensures reservations for EWS, with a Women's Cell solely dedicated to the upliftment of socio-economically challenged women. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the college follows the university examination schedule. In addition, students have to take Continuous Internal Assessments(CIAs) to track their progress before appearing for the end-semester examinations.

The curriculum although restricted has a vast subject variety including practical topics as well as theoretical ones. Also there is projects and presentations to be given every semester which helps build up confidence among students. However there's lack of rigorous implementation.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I choose my course as I loved physics and mathematics from my childhood days and I wanted to do some research related to physics in the later part of my life. The several curriculum in our college prepared ourselves for the real world applications. The frequency of exams was half yearly basis. But several internal exams were happened in between those half yearly exams to prepared us for the difficult problems.

The placement of amity is excellent as we all know for which it is renowned. You have to be capable also not that everyone gets placements because most of them take studies lightly as they are spoon-fed everything. But if you are capable and determined then you can be assured that you'll get a good placement on campus.

In the year I was enrolled, the new fyugp course was established by the university, and was not very burdensome to our department, though improvements were desired by some after the first sem and actions will be probably taken.
