Remarks
As I already mentioned, the college management doesn't treat the students like kids and provides all kinds of liberties. As long as the minimum marks and attendance requirements are met, the college staff is extremely chilled out. If a student is academically very inclined, they can get the support to any extent and every member of the staff is approachable and open minded about everything.
Entrance Preview
The college accepts ranks of CET as well as COMEDK. It takes a fairly good rank to secure a seat as it's one of the top 8 colleges in b'lore! I got a rank of 6748 in COMEDK and chose telecommunication as that was the only one I was getting out of the Computers and Electronics branches.
Course Curriculum Overview
The college is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU, Belgaum). Almost all the engineering colleges in the Karnataka are affiliated to VTU. While the course content and structure cannot be said to be of top quality, it's comparatively good. The topics covered are fairly good with a good number of electives. The entire curriculum is reviewed every four years and changes made wherever necessary.
Internships Opportunities
There weren't many internship options for the undergraduate courses back in the day. Though Intel used to pick up two students from the Computer Science department for internship in the third year.
Placement Experience
The placements can fairly be touted to be one of the best !! In fact placements is one aspect the college is popular for. Almost 100% of the eligible students get placed every year and it's been a trend since 2012 or so. The minimum package for any branch would be ₹3 lpa. The highest package during our batch was that offered by Amazon which was ₹15 lpa and they picked up 5 students. There are many companies that offer above ₹6 lpa. Some of the best companies that I remember that visited for batch include Amazon, DE Shaw, MuSigma, Tesco and Cisco. These are only a few that I remember. For electronics the core companies would be Bosch and Aricent among others. For mechanical CAT and L&T. Apart from all these the mass recruiters like Cognizant, TCS, Wipro and L&T Infotech had visited that year. We were allowed to have two offers from normal companies and one from a dream company. I applied only for L&T Infotech and was selected by them. The package offered was ₹3 lpa The detailed statistics can be found on the official site : http://www.sirmvit.edu/placement-3/placements-report-2014/
College Events
There are events happening almost all the time. On an average, there'd be an event of some sort per week. They may be department fests, club events, preparation for the main fests, the intra college fest or prep for fests of other colleges. There are many academic events also which include competitions, seminars as well as short courses. While almost every department has their own fest, there's an intra college fest called Verve. Apart from these there are many clubs (for drama, literature, entrepreneurship etc) which have their own events. There are many teams from the college for all sorts of activities which participate in the University activities as well as competitions conducted by other colleges. Oh I completely forgot about sports! We have grounds of about 30 acres so all sorts of sports can be played !! Many organizations even conduct their sports events in our college because the grounds are all good and as per standards. During my time, even VTU sports meet was conducted in our college. There's an indoor sports complex which houses a gym, TT courts and Badminton courts. So many sports events also keep happening all the time. The biggest event of the year though is Kalanjali which happens every odd sem and is a full fledged inter collegiate festival...it's one of the best in the city and we have participants from throughout the state !!
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure varies as per the mode of admission. During my time it was as follows : Through CET : ₹32-35k per year Through COMEDK and management quota : ₹1.32-1.35 lakh per year A lumpsum also amount needs to be paid in the beginning for the management seats which differs per demand and course and can be negotiated
Fees and Financial Aid
There's no such facility as far as I know So of course I didn't opt for anything but banks offer educational loans and I know some of the students had availed of the same.
Campus Life
The campus is easily the best in the city. It's spread over 133 acres with buildings spaced well and includes all kinds of sports grounds, faculty residences, student hostels, an indoor sports complex, a guest house, a canteen, a coffee shop, some other shops, a good library, two auditoriums and parking complexes apart from all kinds of labs. The campus also houses a 100 bed general hospital where students can get treated for minor stuff for free. The gender ratio is very good overall with almost 40-50% girls in most of the branches expect mechanical and civil. Almost half the students are feom the northern states and there's amazing tolerance and exposure to all kinds of cultures. There are too many activities to be mentioned and I already described earlier. In short every kind of activity and event is conducted.
Hostel Facilities
There are basically two categories of hostels for the undergraduates. One where the hostels are a little old with common bathrooms and normal flooring and another with newer buildings, attached bathrooms and tiles on the floor. All rooms are twin sharing. The mess is common for all the hostel. It provides with breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner daily. The cost for the old hostel was around ₹50k per year and the new ones was about ₹70k per year. The hostels are maintained very well and all the facilities are available.
Alumni/Alumna
There's an official alumni network for which almost every student registers. While the seniors in college interact well and provide perspectives and guidance regarding what lies ahead of us, the alumni is also invited to the alumni meet every year by the respective departments. The college is more than 25 years old so has a rich alumni network.
Exam Structure
The exam schedule is a little hectic as prescribed by the University but the college life doesn't let the stress get to you. So every month there would be internals. A total of 3 internals every sem, out of which the average of the best of two are taken and they carry a weightage of 25 out of 125 in every theory subject. As soon as the theory internals end, its time for the lab internals, the lab externals and finally the end sem exams. All this in a span of 5 months interspersed by a ton of events and activities!
Admission
The admission was through an entrance exam - COMEDK The exam ranks are accepted throughout the private colleges in Karnataka (for engineering, medicine and dental courses) There are no government colleges under the VTU so this exam is as good as the CET. COMEDK has no weightage for the high school score. I had got a rank of 6748 in the exam. Sir MVIT being one of the best colleges in the city, didn't have seats in the top courses left so I chose Telecom as I was interested in either Computers or Electronics. Admission can also be obtained by paying a heavy amount under the management quota. In that case no entrance exam need be cracked. The number of seats reserved for CET ranks is 50% and it's 25% each for COMEDK and management.
Faculty
Again the faculty isn't top notch but they know exactly how to do their job. The college treats students like adults and they neither control or spoon feed too much. So students have the complete freedom to choose how exactly they want to study and participate in other activities.
