Engineering at IIT Dharwad

IIT Dharwad is one of the best engineering colleges in India with a ranking of 23rd as per the national NIRF Engineering rankings. The opening rank cutoff is at 8612 while the closing rank cutoff is at 16205 in the open category for both males and females. I chose this college because of its good placement record and excellent quality education. The form was to be filled out from the official website of the university. Basic and important details like personal information, marks of 10th and 12th grade, and participation in activities were to be entered. The application fee was 500. To get admission in IIT Dharwad, candidates need to get their rank in JEE Main and JEE Advanced, and later counseling by JoSAA for 5 days. After that, the admission of that candidate is secured in that college. In that counseling, basic university details like rules and regulations, protocols, etc are mentioned.

The course was extremely diverse and needs a lot of time to catch up and pace with it. It also builds up one's skill set and prepares a person for the corporate world. This skill set includes skills like technical knowledge, budgeting skills, creativity, interpersonal skills, project management, etc. The course curriculum is wide and has a live project after almost every module. The modules include chemistry, modern biology, computing, electrical sciences, engineering mathematics, kinematics of machinery, fluid mechanics, mechanical measurements, dynamics of machinery, heat and mass transfer, control systems, and other elective subjects like economics and finance. The professors of each subject are well versed in their specialty. Almost everyone holds a Ph.D degree and in order to keep a good faculty-student ratio, the university kept it at 9:1.

IIT Dharwad saw a whopping placement rate of 95% during my year of graduation. Some of the major recruiters included Microsoft, Nasdaq, Air Asia, TCS, Cognizant, Express Analytics, Sohum Innovations, MAQ Softwares, Larson and Toubro, etc. 59% of the students got placed in the information technology sector while the rest in core engineering, education and research and development. These companies were the ones that even offered summer internships to the students in their final year of study. They required a good amount of skillset like negotiation, communication, and problem-solving. Some of the students even received the PPO(Pre Placement offer) after their tenure of an internship. The ones who did not get a placement offer either went on for an off-campus placement drive or for higher studies like an MBA. The highest package offered was 19 lakhs and the average package was at 12 lakh rupees.

IIT Dharwad offers Merit-cum-means scholarships to 25% of the undergraduate students studying b.tech. The eligibility for this would be the family income of the student less than 4.5 lakh. All SC/ST students are exempted from the payment of fees. They are even provided free messing along with the monthly allowance of 250 rupees for other miscellaneous expenses. Apart from that, the students with family income less than1 lakh will get full remission of fees. And those with a family income between 1 lakh to 5 lakh will get remission of 2/3rd amount of fees.

Along with being A-level in the excellence of studies, IIT-Dharwad never fails to upskill its students in co-curricular too. There are a colossal amount of activities and clubs to keep the students creative-bug active. These clubs include Rhapsody, the music club, Quiz club, Aesthetica, the fine arts club, Eunoia, the literary club, Ugdosh, the dramatic club, and a separate sports department. We were even offered the course in athletics during our first year of study from the National Sports organization. The games included Basketball, cricket, football, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and yoga.
