Remarks
The admission for biochemistry dept. is merit-based (the score of the top 4 subjects obtained by the candidate in the 12th board examination). The application form can be found on the official website of Asutosh College. There is no fixed date for the introduction of the application form, the dates depend on CU. Also, there weren't any application fees when I applied for the course. Being from the general category I don't know much about the reservation benefits, however, I'm sure there are some benefits to the candidates from SC/ST/BPL categories.
Course Curriculum Overview
I always loved Biology in school and when Biomolecules, Genetics, Cell biology, and Enzymes were introduced in the 11th and 12th I found myself more interested in those than Botany and Zoology. So, I started looking for courses that include those topics. My chemistry teacher (school) was the one who told me about Biochemistry. There are a total of 12 faculty (9 teaching staff and 3 non-teaching staff members) who are really helpful; seven of the professors have Ph.D. and 2 have degrees in M.Sc. Due to the classes being online, there is not much to say about their classroom teaching method. However, the online classes are mostly regular with adequate materials. The only negative is the teaching language. Mostly the professors take the classes in Bengali, which is given due to the majority of the students being Bengali, but it causes a little difficulty to non-Bengali students. Still, they explain and answer in English if questioned in English.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees structure for microbiology and biochemistry is higher as compared to the other courses. There are scholarships available; SVMCM (Not sure but I guess only for the students from Bengal Board) and minority scholarship. I have only heard of these two till now.
Campus Life
The College organizes several fests like Cultural fest, Winter carnival (end of December), and Common room Carnival. Along with it, there are also Annual Sports, Asutosh Soccer League, Badminton Tournament, etc. The student's week is also being celebrated in which various competitions like article writing, poem recitation, singing competition, quiz, etc are organized. Many other extracurricular activities and cultural programs are also organized throughout the year on the campus. For biochemistry dept. there are two libraries (as said by the professors). One for the whole college and the other one is a dept. specific for biochemistry. During the time college was open for two months I was able to visit the dept. library. I wasn't allowed to take the books because of the pandemic and health issues but the library looked equipped with books (though it was small).
Other Applied Colleges
Vivekananda College | BSc. Hons. Biochemistry
Because I got into Asutosh and Asutosh has the best Biochem dept in Kolkata among govt. Colleges
