A brief idea about M.Tech at NIT Rourkela

It's one of the top ranked NIT in India and also it is well connected with major cities. The admission for M.Tech. is through CCMT and the counselling process is solely based on GATE score. The total admission process takes almost 2months including Normal round and special round as well. I searched for different colleges and different specializations on youtube, quora, other review sites. I enquired about the placement statistics as well. As my score was average it is very tough to get a seat in top NITs, but I kept believe on the process and finally I got my seat in NIT Rourkela after a long process. Also you have to pay separate registration fees for normal round and special round. You can give as much as preferences rank wise for different colleges and specializations. NIT Rourkela has very good infrastructure, study climate, central library, sports complexes etc. Also it is nearer to my hometown. NIT Rourkela has also very knowledgeous faculties. I think I got my best choice. Finally I am happy to be a part of NT atmosphere.

For Mechanical Engineering at NIT Rourkela, every faculty member is the store house of knowledge. They have well research knowledge which helps a scholar to carry on his preferred research at NIT Rourkela. For my specialization, we are 22 students and the present faculties give their best possible guidance and teaching to us. All faculties Phd. holders. Many of them have 25Yr+ teaching experience, some of them have more than that. Exam schedule at NIT Rourkela is quite compact and student friendly. For each semester the mark distribution is like end_sem : 50 marks, mid_sem : 30 marks and Teaching _Assistantship : 20 marka. But you have to be very honest in the assignments and tasks given by each faculty for their respective subjects. If you have cleared all your doubts during the class and do the assignment properly then there ia no such difficulty in passing the exams.

There are a lot of internships as well for the students. You can go for both on campus or off campus internships.

As a M.Tech student you can expect a lot of software and analytics companies during the placement season. For M.Tech the placement starts from 3rd semester onwards. For mechanical core companies, the number is lesser as compared to software companies. But overall the placement is good. If you really need a job you can definitely get one here. I personally recommend you to go for atleast one programming language irrespective of any branch. They allow every specialization students for software jobs.Companies like TCS, Capgemini, EPAM, Code Nation, etc. are coming every single year. For core companies you can expect Tata steel, Bajaj Auto, GE, BHEL, etc.Keep in mind that most of the corr companies eligible the students having only 1year education gap after B.Tech. So prepare according to that. But software companies give some relaxation in this regards. For placement package you can't expect any number. But on an average you can get around 5-6L CTC for M.Tech people.Many students prefer higher studies as well. They go for Phd. in reputed IITs, IISC and aslo some foreign Universities after their M.Tech.

The best thing to clear GATE exam and take admission in M.Tech is the scholarship provided by the Govt. You get 12400 monthly during the course duration from which you cam easily pay your college fees and also you can save some pocket money for you.

Due to the ongoing pandemic the total session is conducted in online mode. We have not been called by the college yet. The online classes are being conducted through Microsoft Teams. But doing the lab classes is quite unpleasant. For the books and library, as total things are in online mode, NIT Rourkela has done a brilliant job for the students to access its central library named "Biju Patnaik Central Library" completely through online mode. Also we have given login credentials to access famous international journals. Each student and faculty have been provided with individual email ids for all official works. Also every small as well as large events and special occasions are being celebrated. NIT Rourkela has many clubs and groups for its students. There is always opportunities for the coding people. Also a lot of competition are being held on different occasions. Don't have any idea about sports but quora suggests that NIT R campus provides better facilities for sports and exercises. It has gym and swimming pool as well according to some of my friends who have studied earlier.

NIT hostel has the best for its students. You have to pay 5000 for bed charge for each semester. Messing charge is extra and it's arround 20000 per semester.Each hostel has its own canteen. Also facilities for different indoor sports inside the hostel.My friends also gave me some excellent remarks about the hostel food. NIT Rourkela hostels provide the best food to its inmates.

The admission process is based only on GATE score. No such GD or PI ia there. The counselling process is through centralized counselling done through CCMT. You just give your preference on CCMT site and wait for the results in each round. There is also a special round. In this round the remaining seats which gone vacant in the normal rounds are going to fill up. You have to make fresh registration for special round.
