Kevin Xavier Chakeyath's Review On Federal Institute Of Science And Technology - [FISAT], Ernakulam

Entrance Preview :

I took the Kerala Engineering Agricultural Medical (KEAM) Entrance Exam in 2012. I only took the Engineering entrance Examination in KEAM. I scored 285 and my rank was in Nineteen thousand. Federal Institute of Science and Technology was a good college by reputation and it was close to my house also. So i did not think twice before enrolling into the college. I could only get a seat in management quota.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course is good. But in the credit system(followed by the MG University) more credit was given to the theory rather than practical. Personally I believe that the practical should be given more credit so as to prepare the students for the corporate life. Research was not part of the curriculum designed by the university.

Internships Opportunities :

College provides internship on request. I had a internship at BSNL. The college also encouraged internship at Keltron ,Tata Communication etc. As per say, we did not have any stipend, as the main aim was to get a hands on experience ,rather than the stipend.

Placement Experience :

Placement is also good in our campus. We had all the big IT giants like TCS ,UST Global,SCB,Microsoft etc .There are also many startup companies like Multunus, Spectrum,6D Technologies coming. Other core companies were SAP , Procsys, Kalkitech etc. TCS (3.3lakhs per annum), UST (3.3lakhs per annum), SCB (3.7 lakhs per annum), Multunus (5.4 lakhs per annum).

College Events :

We had a lot of activites happening in our college. There are Intra-college programs and Inter-college programs. Cultural events include Arangu and Bharatham. Technical events include Nautilus, Agnitio, Thyra etc. We also had socialy commited programs called Day to remember, Science Quizes for school students etc. Nautilus attracted above 3000 students. Other events are intra college events.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fee structure was not very expensive for government quota, but a bit expensive for management quota. It was about 60,000 rupees for government seat and 1,30,000 rupees for management seat. The college also supported fee waiver program for students who got ranks above 2000 in Kerala Engineering Exam. The college also helps poor bright students with the fee.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There was full fee waiver for students who got rank below 2000 in Kerala engineering entrance. And college also supports the teaching of poor students who can study really well. Few students in our college has also got the Richard Mervin Scholarship.

Campus Life :

Campus is filled with trees and eco- friendly space. Gender ratio depended on branches. But overall its was a 1:1 ratio.we had more boys in mechanical and instrumentation branches but more girls in civil and electronics branches. The tolerance is very high at our college. No particular interest to specific religion/group was given.

Alumni/Alumna :

Ragging was completely banned in college. Seniors were very friendly and helpful in academics. Seniors led us in various organisation.Alumni also is active at our college. We have yearly reunions.

Exam Structure :

Exam days were hectic as we had 2 exams happening on the same day. This was for internal exam. The university exams were unpredictable. Sometimes there were gaps and sometimes it was hectic. Lab sessions were not hectic. We had 2 days of lab in a week. Although it was not very easy, then too it was not hectic.

Faculty :

The teachers are well qualified. The minimum degree to get job in our college is a M.tech/M.E in respective branch. We also have teachers with doctorate. The interest shown by the teachers is immense. The teachers always makes sure that the student is understanding the concept. The language of communication is English, but the teachers are ready to come down to the regional language for students with language problem.

The Semester exams are tough. Electronics and biomedical engineering is a growing field that offers high chances to students in the future. I like how technology and medicine are totally different and we can join this way.

Actually placement cell is a bit week the company's is not that reputed and they offer monthly salary of 12k to 15k. Probably some startup companies. And many students choose that and work for 1 or 2 years to gain experience and then they apply for better opportunities.

As there is a course outcome and course theory all the topics and modules are taken on the basis of this. All classroom are digital and there is proper lights and fans. And because of that it is the perfect environment for teaching and also students to learn.Exams are taken on series levels and semester levels. They are moderately difficult

From the 3rd year onwards we could attend placement interviews and many companies used to approach our college but mostly IT companies as I was in civil dept the construction companies were very less or NIL. In our batch, most of the students got placed and many offer letters but the only disadvantage was the offers were not from the core companies.
