My college experience

The good aspect of my college is it comes under SANJAY GANDHI POSTGRADUATE INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES which is a well known and one of the top institutes and hospital of the country. The teachers are doctors working in the same hospital. Every department is directly associated with the departments inside the hospital, the director of the institute work together with the Nodal officer of the college in order to run the smooth function. The only bad aspect is it was established in the year 2018, although fully equipped with all the requirements. My admission was conducted through an entrance exam conducted by the university itself on August 2nd. The results were declared by the 21st of August and the next few days went in completing the rest of the admission procedures. We joined the college in the first week of September. I preferred this college solely on the name and quality of SGPGIMS. I knew I would get good exposure to practical as well as theory through this college.

My course is directly related to my field of interest in the human body i.e. The Human Heart. The faculty is different for every department, each department has seats for 10 students (+2) And more than 7-8 doctors work in a single department including residents and the Consultants of the department. The teachers opt for the traditional way of teaching through ppts inside the college whereas the practical sessions are held in the hospital departments under the supervision of the specific HODs. The final exams are held in May which stretched June last week through three internal exams are conducted throughout the year. Examiners were called from outside the college, and the question papers came from the outside as well. The exams were difficult to pass as we had a whole stretch of the syllabus.

You can find various internships online, related or unrelated to your field of study. Although the course I am doing would not have any internship opportunity before completing college. The college gives an internship opportunity in the hospital in the 4th year of the college, to which a stipend of 5k/month is provided to each student. The students in the internship have to work towards patient care with the doctors in their departments. Their work is all about what they learn.

No campus placements are provided. Though being close to the hospital and being in direct contact with our HODS in the hospital itself does it us some benefit in searching for a job. Students can go dropping their CVs at hospitals and they get a job easily after a PI round. The highest package of an allied health worker varies from 6 lakh to 10 Lakh per annum. In the medical field, every student gets placed in a hospital looking at the vast field of work in the country. I plan to opt for masters after I complete the degree. I feel a masters degree will nourish my degree more.

Fees remain constant throughout the course of 4 years. That is 55k, internship year (4th year) does not require any submission of fees. The hostel fees are 6k per year and the mess charges revolve around 3000 per year. Government scholarships are provided to the students with low inhouse incomes and they even get full fees in their accounts. There are no on-campus jobs as of now, although the internship year provided a stipend of 5k/month.

There is no annual fest conducted. Although, the foundation day of SGPGIMS holds as a special day for us. The library is a vast area full of books from every department and every subject varying from surgery to health checkups. The classrooms are equipped with a good number of benches and chairs, a whiteboard, a podium, a table and a chair and projector with laptops for the teachers. No sports events are conducted. No social groups or clubs are made for the students or by the students.

The hostel is a new one that is made clean and equipped. The rooms are divided by aluminium flyers in a single hall, every room has accommodation of two students, two beds two study tables two fans and two cupboards. The meal quality is average with different meals every day thrice a day. The hostel is provided by contacting the hostel in charge. Any locality near SGPGI will provide good rooms on rent of PG with roughly an estimated rent of 5k per month.

There was a written test for the admission which was followed by a PI counselling session by the Nodal officer and the faculty of the college. The admission is held by forms which are uploaded on the website of SGPGIMS i.e sgpgi.ac.in Students can fill the form and wait for the dates of the entrance exam which is sent to them on the E-Mail provided. The entrance test is held on the syllabus of class 11th and 12th and some basics of English, Maths and General Knowledge.
