Remarks
I have gained a lot from this college in the short span of two years. So all I have a very good impression about this college. The College management was very active and honest in their duties. The institute has an anti-ragging committee to ensure that there will be no such incident happen to innocent newly admitted student by the seniors. Regarding the improvement opportunities, I would like to say that the college should invest more in strengthening the Faculty base and their retention policy and improve the hostel facility.
Entrance Preview
I have taken MAT (Management Aptitude Test) as an entrance exam to get admitted to Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology (MSIT) Kolkata for 2 years MBA course. I have secured 72 rank in the exam. The exam comprised of numerical and verbal aptitude type questions, data interpretation, logical reasoning etc. I have opted this college because it is a reputed one for MBA and it located near to my home.
Course Curriculum Overview
The MBA course was very intensive the entire course spanned in 2 years divided into 4 semester. The first two semester comprised of general management courses where as the last two semester covers the specialization papers like Marketing, Finance, HR, IT, Operations Management etc.
Internships Opportunities
Our college provides a platform for internship at various multinational companies and other organisations including Banks, Educational Institutions etc as part of the MBA project work in the summer vacation. I have done an internship at Air India for 2 months the stipend offered was Rs 5000 per month in 2009.
Placement Experience
There was a student placement cell through which MBA students have been hired on campus by many companies towards the end fourth semester. There was ample job opportunities in multinational companies across industries (e.g. IT/ITES, Manufacturing, BFSI, Retail, Educational Institutions). Below are the companies visited our campus: TCS, Wipro, Genpact, Cognizant, ITC Infotech, PwC, HSBC, Exin Group of companies, Bridgetree, Ideal Analytics, FIITJEE etc. The packages offered ranges from 2.5 - 9 lakhs per annum.
College Events
Our college organises many technical and cultural festivals throughout the year. The prime annual fest is a techno management fest organised jointly by the Management and Engineering department of the college. These fest comprised of many technical as well as management games to build the young minds and a platform for the students to showcase their skills, enthusiasm, passion and innovation. The fest spreads over three days and local celebrities used to be invited as chief guests or as a part of the performance.
Fee Structure And Facilities
As MBA course is by default an expensive study specially at an private college, but given the facilities, faculties and other amenities, I would it was at per the market rate. Our MBA fees includes a personal Laptop for study and other referred books, software etc. The fees was Rs 9 lakhs all inclusive for the two years (2008 - 2010). This does not include hostel fees who opted for it.
Fees and Financial Aid
Our college provide a limited number of scholarships to the meritorious and economically poor students. But that was not sufficient to cover the entire academic expenses. Hence the college was tied up with some Banks to provide financial support and loan facility with special discounted rates. One of my close friend has taken an educational loan of 4 lakhs from AXIS Bank for the MBA course at an interest rate of 9%.
Campus Life
My campus life was awesome as I can recall those days as my golden days. It was a perfect mix of academic as well as cultural. The gender ratio was pretty much balanced for our MBA course it was 60:40 for boys versus girls. As there was very limited hostel facility so most of us used to stay nearby and used party in the weekends at our places. There was many opportunities for extracurricular activities like drama, music, sports, debate competition, magazine writing etc.
Hostel Facilities
The college have a limited seats hostel facility for both boys and girls. Many students used to commute from home who stays in the city or nearby. Only those students who cannot commute from their respective residence are provided hostel on demand. The hostel rooms have twin sharing facility with a mess. The mess offered very basic meals two times a day and breakfast. For snacks and other special items students used to rely on the outside food vendors. The monthly mess charges used to be around Rs 1200.
Alumni/Alumna
Every graduating student of the college have an opportunity to become an Alumni for Life time by enrolling into MSIT Alumni Association. The college arrange Alumni days so that Alumni members can interact with the students and share their experience and provide networks or industry contacts to the students. I had gained a lot from some of the Alumni members of our department. Some of the distinguished alumni members from Industry used to share their experience which is priceless for the graduating students.
Exam Structure
As mentioned earlier that the MBA course was divided into 4 semester spanned across 2 years. Each semester there was 6 papers i.e. 6 subject areas that has to be covered. At the end of each semester, the college used to conduct a final exam for that semester and a student need to pass each paper individually. If there is a backlog, the student need to complete it in the next semester along with other papers. Also the faculties used to conduct some quizzes or short test as part of coursework any time during a semester. As MBA course, there was so much to study and do the case studies, surveys etc. it was a little hectic schedule in general.
Faculty
The department has a dedicated team of faculties each specialized in different areas of management disciplines. The faculties have a minimum qualification as PhD or NET. Most of the faculties have some publications as well as have some Industry experience.
