Entrance Preview
I took IIT JEE, WB JEE, COMEDK.Rank of IIT I do not remember. At WB JEE, I got something around 15000.At COMEDK I received 6226 as rank.I was pretty sure I have to work in computers only. But at SMVIT, though CSE branch seats were all full, but for ISE the seats were still available. The difference of subjects in CSE and ISE were only two subjects that two only in 3rd and/or 4th year, which could be obviated by using choices of subjects. Hence I went ahead to choose ISE (Information Science Engineering at SMVIT college.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was really nice. It appeared a bit too much at times. The first year subjects were kind of repeats from 12th standard, hence it was good. But further our subjects went more and more challenging.
Internships Opportunities
The companies that came during my time, were HP, Amazon, Thomson Reuters, Infosys, Wipro, and many more.I could get through Infosys and Wipro, but I chose to join Infosys for it's renowned training experience at Mysore Campus. We did not have any internship as such but our training at Mysore did include our salary, which was quite less, around 13k.
Placement Experience
During our time, it was slow recover from the recession time. So, the offers were less. Infosys took around 150 people from all branches, Electrical, CSE, ISE, Electronics, and other branches as well.Infosys offered around 3.25.HP took around 20 people, if I may remember vaguely. HP offered a package of around 2.6.Thomas Reuters had an offer of around 4. And they selected around 5 people.
College Events
We had technical, cultural and management fests happening. Students participated in presenting their innovations and they also went to other colleges to win prizes on robotics. Cultural fests as well used to be organized at grand level. Prizes were also distributed in those events. Dance and Singing and General knowledge competitions used to happen as well.We also used to be part of the college magazine team(selected members) to manage the final college magazine of the year.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure was expensive for people through ComedK exams, and even more for the Management quota students. The CET students were relieved to pay very less fee, which appeared a bit injustice to us.Like, for students through ComedK, the fee was around 85K, for Management people around 1.25L, and for students through CET exams (only for Karnataka students) the fee was around 25K only.
Fees and Financial Aid
I don't think there was any facility for loans or scholarship from the college. Though students were free to take education loans from banks.
Campus Life
Gender ratio was like Male 75% and 25% female.Hostel parties were not there, though students used to do party on their own. Opportunity for extracurricular activities were open to us for sports and robotic competitions. We did not have much issue on discrimination as such. But some times there used to be instances where people would depart as north Indians and south Indians. And small tit bits of quarrels used to occur.
Exam Structure
We used to have internal examinations of both theories and labs. We were supposed to perform well in internal exams as well. The external exams used to be conducted by Visvesvaraya Technological University. The exams were not so frequent, rather the internal exams used to prepare us well for the externals.
Faculty
Faculty availability at college was sort of mix of good and average teachers. Some times the good faculty was for the other branch for a particular subject whereas at other times(different semesters) we used to receive a better faculty for a given subject as compared to the other branch (CSE).
