Remarks

There are no such bad remarks about the college which I have experienced. Though I expect with time, there are more facilities available in the college like live lectures on topic wise in the hall. Yet the college though doesn't have a lot of fame and is mainly known for politics, I in my tenure didn't find any such political incident to take place which obliterated the sanctity of an educational centre. If any shenanigans happened, they were dealt with punitive measures by the college authority maintaining the discpline. Thus though there are a lot of people saying it to be a bad college, I experienced that what's in a name if you can study on your own in a student friendly environment.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

Course curriculum is something which we can boast of. The course is well furnished with every single chapter included when needed. The year wise pattern is excellently helplful for the undergraduate students to learn a completely new branch of science. The Course is fully research driven, and gives ample opportunity to think about the various research projects that can be made in the tenure of study which at the same time increases the weughtage of CV of an individual. Each year fieldwork is necessary in the curriculum which is at the same time highly recommended for any person studying Geology. Industrial field and mine visit happens in the third year which is also well framed. All this makes an individual interested as well as capable in the field of Geology.

Placement Experience

3.5

Placement to be honest is not provided in any Basic Science college. As the scenario is now, no company is ready to give a job to a Bsc graduate without any further tests or assessments. But the teaching style and the course curriculum makes a student capable to qualify any exam if there is similiar effort form his or her end. Internships are available but the student have to look after the opportunity and openings, and may apply. The teachers will guide him or her during the process.

College Events

5

Every college has it's own event which is the fun part. My college though do not have any lavish extravaganza type fest, yet, the fest organised by the Student Union is enjoyable. There are various small events throughout the year where one can take part and display their extracurricular skills.

Fee Structure And Facilities

As it's a government college, the fee structure is actually very friendly and don't burn a hole in the pocket. 6k to 7k per year is a very nominal fee a college can offer a student to pay for his course. The college accepts Challan slip which is to be taken from the bank paying the amount there. One can pay by cash or card in the bank and take the challan slip and submit it to the college. There are no additional fees asked to be paid for securing admission. The fees structure is transparent and each detail is mentioned in the Challan slip.

Fees and Financial Aid

I availed for DST Inspire Scholarship through the website of DST. A form was there in the website which I had to get signed from my Principal which was done in a day and I submitted it to the DST website and got the scholarship. The college officals guided me how to apply for it and when to apply for it and also helped me throughout the process.

Campus Life

4

Gender ratio is better than many colleges. Campus life is enjoyable and student friendly. Extracurricular activities happen all the year round and there are sports complexes for interested students. Both indoor and outdoor sports are encouraged and competitions are held throughout the year for that. Debates happen in the presecne of many eminent teachers and personality throughout the year. There are no instances of discrimination based on any issues.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is highly active and always helpful. Whenever needed they stand by you helping you. Any sort of guidance is provided by them whenever asked for. There is no incident of ragging or any ruckoos in the college. The seniors are like batchmates who are friendly with their juniors and that's the culture of the college.

Admission

I chose Geology as it's a different basic branch of science which doesn't have the hype like that of Chemistry Mathematics or Physics, yet, it's important. Earth Sciences is not known to all atleast in India, which makes it a lesser known subject. I chose to read it because I don't always like to go with the flow. Factors for choosing the college are 1. The college is one of the three colleges where Geology is taught in Kolkata. I didn't sit for the Bsc test in Geology in Presidency University that's why couldn't study there. And to be honest I didn't take part in the counselling process of Jadavpur University for Geology Bsc Admission. All this led me to where I am today. 2. The college is near my house 3. The professors are extremely efficient knowledgeable and experienced. All these led me choose the college. I got chosen in Asutosh college on the first list based on my merit. There was no problem at all during admission. I followed the protocol given in the admission form and at the end of the day my admission was approved.

Faculty

5

The faculty members are highly qualified, trained experienced. Each and every member is highly qualified in his or her discipline. Their knowledge and skills makes a good influence on the students and their friendly nature helps to understand the subject better. Each one of the professors have certified experience from places like ISRO, GSI etc.

College does provide internship opportunities both through the placement cell as well as department faculty. Semester 5 and Semester 7 students are eligible for placements. Average package is about 5.5 lakh per annum for microbiology course. Although placement percentage is on the lower side majority of students go for higher studies. Many prepare for exams like GATE, IIT JAM, etc.

college placements are good in this college with a number of good financial and consultancy firms coming in with new gen companies as well in the service and sales industry. moreoever getting a good placement in a top financial or consultancy placement requires a POR in a good society as a criteria, its not really required but adds to your chances of getting it. moreover you require to participate in a number of case study competitions for the same as well. my plans after graduation is probably working for a year or two after which i plan on doing my MBA. around 50-60% who apply get a placement.

The course also includes practical classes in the sound labs, editing labs and we will learn to use a camera, as one of the things we will have to do in this course is make films of our own.

In today's competitive job market it becomes important for the college to not just help students get degrees but also provide them with placements and internships so that they can have the experience needed to stand at a competitive footing with the rest of the candidates in the world. To look into this, St. Xavier's College has a Placement Cell run by Placements officer Mr. Niladri Sinha under whose guidance, various companies visit the college regularly looking for capable young minds to take under their wing and help provide them with the necessary exposure and experience so that they can combat any obstacles that they face.

Placement Experience:

The college offers good placements for economis. Students in their final year are eligible for campus placements and there is a cell dedicated to placements. Many students do not opt for placements and go for higher studies but many students who opt for it, get placed with decent packages. Many well-known companies visit the campus as well. I wish to explore my options after completing the degree as of now.

We have a placement cell helping students get placed. They keep posting opportunities like internships and fellowships throughout the year to groom students and give them exposure and experience. Placements can go to very high packages like those in Data Science, Big 4 consulting or core finance or banking jobs. CAs, CFAs and FRMs do well in the placements. The highest packages could surpass 12-13 LPA and median packages are close to 6-7 LPA. DE Shaw, Zomato, Myntra, Meesho, TCS and McKinsey are some top companies coming here.
