Suman Suresh's Review On Government Engineering College - [GECI], Idukki

The college management is as in every government colleges in the state.

We have a course subject divided into 6 modules, we have two internal assessments conducted by the college with university guidelines and an entire semester examination conducted by the university. An attendance requirement of 75 percent is required for each subject to be able to appear for the semester exam.

We attend bi-monthly campus placement drives on various colleges and these placement drives are made available to us due to the initiatives of the placement instructors of our college. We have attended several internships individually and an internship was conducted by our department for the entire class. We have also had industrial visits to several industries that hold key information beneficial for our curriculum.

We hold a nation wide techno-cultural fest called Advaya which has been running every year for the past 9 years. The average budget for the fest is approximately a million Indian Rupees collected from various sponsors and partly funded by the college. We also hold Arts and Sports festivals within the college which our department have been winning for the past couple of years.

Our college is funded by the government. For the same reason the college fee structure is feasible for every section of the society. When a student is selected into the college, he or she must attend an interview with the institution head after which the student is given details about the curriculum and fee structure. The college does not demand any payment in addition but the government demands an initial payment equivalent to the first year fee which will secure the admission. After availing the admission the student is not required to pay the fee as the student had already paid it as part of admission criterion. The fee is also refundable upon admission cancelation.

The Government offers various scholarships on the basis of merit as well as financial situation of the students. Every student who have an annual income below INR 1 lakh are eligible for scholarships by the Government.

Gender ratio of the college as a whole is neutral. The students, staff and other human accessories of the college do not hold any bias based on ethnic, racial, cultural or sexual differences. The college is entirely secular in its activities giving absolute freedom to every student in forms of expression.

The hostel buildings are converted Public Works Department buildings. 4-6 students share a hostel room and we have two storied bunker beds. The electricity and water bill of the hostel are paid by the Government.

The alumni of the college entertain various good positions in the society. Some of our seniors have initiated start-ups which is a huge inspiration for every student in the college.

Due to the successful completion of the Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination, I was allocated a statewide rank. With the rank I was able to submit an application to any of the engineering colleges in the state. From the list, I chose Government Engineering College Idukki and Mechanical Engineering Course for my bachelor's degree. I started my classes on 2nd August 2016

Every faculty is required to have a masters degree for the stream in which they teach. The average age of a faculty is approximately 35-40 years. The professors hold a doctorate in research for their stream of specialization. We have almost 30 faculty per department. Most of the faculty have industrial working experience in sectors beneficial for the curriculum. As for teaching experience, most of the faculty have atleast an experience of 10 years or more.
