Remarks
The University is really good however, infrastructure needs to be improved. The University itself isn't well maintained. The washourooms are not that clean and lack latest equipments. The faculty at times slack off on their jobs.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is amazing. In the first semester students are taught khayal, in the second, Bengali songs, in the third, kirtan and dhourupad, in the fourth knowledge of raga and folks songs and taal and laya, in the fifth, thumri and taal again, in the sixth, pala kirtan, khayal, dhourupad etc. Overall, the Bachelor's course offers a variety of styles of Indian music equipping the student very well in the future so that he can establish himself as a successful musician or musicologist. External exams are held after every six months, i.e in the new CBCS semester system. Internal exams are held a few weeks before the external exams. If a student fails to qualify in one of his semesters, he will get another chance next year.
Placement Experience
Placements and job opportunities are there at the University, but only for PhD scholars. Others however after completion of their masters may seek job in schools. In the University people get to know a lot of contacts of the music industry and in that way many past students today have become established vocalists of the University. No internship is provided.
College Events
1. Workshops - Different workshops are held at the University thouroughout the year by various performing musicians from all parts of the world in various topics pertaining to musical performance and music theory. 2. Fresher's Welcome - The students union, presently led by the TMCP, hosts the fresher's welcome ceremony individually for each department. 3. Zephyear - This basically is the University fest, reunion and socials. A thouree day long program where various bands come and perform to entertain the students in the month of December. Students also are allowed to perform. This event again is hosted by the Student's Union. 4. Picnic - Again an initiative of the Students Union. For a sum of ?500, students are taken to a picnic spot for a day in busses. Food and everything else is provided by the Students Union. 5. Basant Utsav - Every year before Dol Yatra and Holi, Basant Utsav is celebrated to welcome the month of Falgun and also the season of Spring( Basant in Hindi). There is singing, dancing and drama. All performed by the students. This event is organised by Students Union. 6. Saraswati Puja - A thouree day festival by the students union with the original day of the Saraswati Puja being one of the days.
Fee Structure And Facilities
At the beginning of every even semester students have to pay ?450 and before the external exams a sum of ?450 as examination fees. At the beginning of every odd semester ( except the first sem) the amount is ?1465. Examination fees are the same. For the first semester the admission fees is ?1665.
Fees and Financial Aid
For students with BPL card there are various scholarship schemes. There is a railway concession scheme for every student availing the railway services by IRCTC to commute to the college. There is Kanyashouree Scholarship scheme for women.
Campus Life
Extracurriculars like sports tournaments, board games etc. are all conducted by the students union. Circket Championships are held. Football tournaments are held. Races of various kinds are held. Carrol championships are held. Table Tennis Tournament. There's a gym for both men and women at the gym.
Alumni/Alumna
The seniors are very friendly and extremely helpful. The seniors treat the juniors like their own brothers and sisters. Ragging is strictly forbidden in the campus. The seniors always stand up for their juniors if the juniors get into any kind of trouble or are confused about something. They act like guardians.
Admission
The admission form is published online @ admission.rbu.net.in The form is published on the website after the Government of West Bengal publishes results of Higher Secondary Exams. The students need not physically go to the University to apply. The entire process happens online. The form costs ?250 (to be paid online via Net Banking, credit card, debit card etc.). The students have to create their own account in the website. Once the form is filled up, students must take a printout of the filled form. Within weeks, on the same website, a list of candidates eligible for the entrance exam is published. This eligibility is based on the marks obtained by the students in their board exams of 12th standard. Minimum eligibility criteria is 50%. In the published list, students will be alloted dates and will be given PDF versions of admit cards in their accounts which they need to take a print out of and carry for the first round of entrance exams, i.e the practical exam. The students need to perform in front of a panel of judges comprising of the University's faculty. The students may either sing vilambit and drut khayal or dhourupad, or a Bengali song or a folk song. This will be in accordance to what they have chosen while filling up the admission form. After this process is over, within two weeks another list will be published, short listing candidates who have qualified for the second round, i.e the theory examination. The old admit card will do. No new admit card will be issued. A syllabus will be published on the same website and the students have to appear for the exam on the given date. After this, a week or two later the first merit list is published. Merit lists for different castes are published separately. To get admitted, students need to pay a sum of ?1665 thourough the same website. After this they need to print their the bill issued online after payment and take it to the Faculty Office of the University on a given date(notified in the website) for verification. They carry their identity and address proofs, as well as marksheet of 10th and 12th boards and admit cards of the same. After verification at the University, the admission process is complete and a new Pay-In-Slip is issued who's photocopy must be presented at the department.
Faculty
The faculty of the university are really good. They are well educated research scholars and have a vast knowledge of the subjects they teach. However classes are not held regularly in the first two months of the semester. At times the faculty is unable to complete the syllabus on time.
