Remarks
Overall a good college in central India but needs a change in examination pattern and curriculum. Choice based credit system is now implemented which will make the choice of courses in the hands of students allowing greater flexibility and allows students to follow their interests.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course Curriculum is pretty obsolete and traditional. Not in line with current trends in Mech Engg. but slowly picking up. Not much research really. Exam structure consisted of 3 unit tests and an end semester test per semester. The exams were very conventional in nature and lacked the modern approach to engineering evaluation. The labs were of 3 hrs every week for every course but lacked in proper infrastructure and facilities. Also it didn’t involve too much involvement of the students. Mostly manual based learning.
Placement Experience
Yes placement and job opportunities are good. Most students are placed in the IT sector in mass recruiting companies like Accenture, Infosys etc. Mech Engg didn’t provide an internship as part of course work but soon it will be implemented. My overall experience regarding placements particularly Mechanical Engg is okay as the no. of core mechanical engg companies are less.
College Events
Cultural- Pratishruti, the biggest fest in our college. Technical- Technovaganza, fairly big and attracts a considerable crowd. Workshop on Aptitude Development attracts students from all over Nagpur and Vidarbha. Considered the best aptitude development workshop- 3 days- Can only be undertaken once.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Mid range fees. Rs 114000 per year for 4 years. MBA and MCA have different fee structure. The MBA is cheaper as compared to other b-schools in the country. Mtech also has a very reasonable fee. The college comes under the mid range fees category in India.
Fees and Financial Aid
Government Scholarships are provided through the government portals. Not much on the level of the college. Being an autonomous college it should have greater control over its functionality but Nagpur University rules are followed mostly.
Campus Life
Sadly the college maintains a very conservative outlook and has a very low level of tolerance. Diverse cultural soceities aren’t there. Also there is a strict perspective about gender and roles of students.
Alumni/Alumna
Some alumni have set up startups. These alumni have helped us a lot and motivated us. An alumni who got a grant from Mahindra for their Electric bike startup visited our college and gave interesting insights into the world of startups.
Admission
I got the admission through the JEE Mains Entrance Exam marks. I always had a knack of making things and was very interested in Robotics/Mechatronics. Thus I wished to be enrolled in Mechanical Engineering. But I got Electronics Design Technology which is the only undergraduate course in subject in Asia. I switched over to Mechanical Engineering in second year by scoring a high CGPA in first year. There is an option to switch branches in second year of engineering as the first year is common. This college being a Hindi Minority College has two basis of admission. First is through the Maharashtra Govt. online counselling process in which the state govt. rules are applicable such as reservation for certain categories. Second is through the institute level admissions which comprises of 51%. The institute level admissions are very transparent and fair. Overall the admission process is very fair, systematic and transparent. RCOEM being a very reputed college in Central India attracts many students.
Faculty
Most faculty are very good in their respective areas but a few others lack the skills a professor needs to have. As these professors don’t have to pursue a Bachelors or Masters in Education, they lack the understanding and abilities of a professor. They may be excellent for industries but lacked in teaching qualities.
