Remarks
Well, there is not a single negative remark for the University of Calcutta.Only a few things needed to be taken care of. 1.The setas offered for any course by the University is very less. For the 2015-2017 session, Journalism and Mass Communication dept offered only 90 setas. 2.The chances of getting admitted into the course by clearing the entrance exam is very challenging. In the 2015-2017 session, for the 40% of the setas (45 setas) in Journalism and Mass Communication dept, a number of 940 950 students sat for the entrance exam!
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum covers all the fields of journalism and mass communication.Though I was a student of English literature in graduation, I did not find any issues studying the Masters level course curriculum of M.A.in Journalism and Mass Communication in the University of Calcutta. The curriculum made the UGC (University Grants Commision) is apt for the journalistic market.
Placement Experience
The university and the Journalism and Mass Communication depertment doesn't do a very good job in providing placement and job opportunities.Only some occassional placement dirves or inter drives are organised by the University.
College Events
There are lots of events celebrated in the University. There is an auditorium in the University itself and it organises almost an event in every three months. We, being the students of Journalism and Mass Communication, the course of two years was really an eventful time for all of us.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fees are cheap, not at all expensive. But now l, with the upgradation to semester format, the fees structure is revised and hiked a bit.
Fees and Financial Aid
In the University of Calcutta, the fees structure for the course of a full time masters course is cheap. It is actually very cheap. So there is not at all the need of funding related issue like issues of getting loan for the course. As far as I know, the university does not provide any of such facility.
Campus Life
There are options of extra curricular activities like some sort of a fashion event, recreation event, sports event which consists of sports like cricket football and the like.Lab facilities are also there for the courses that demand lab related classes and practices.
Hostel Facilities
Well, there are the option of University hostels. The hostel building is just beside University campus. The fee structure of the hostel is also decent. There are admission related things that are not known to me properly.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni and faculty and also some of the senior students are actually helpful. If an individual student is capable enough to build his network and friendship and connections with the alumni, the faculty, the students, the senior students; he or she will be definitely helpful for his or her future endeavours.
Admission
As Journalism and Mass Communication is an open field, the students who have done graduation with different streams are also eligible to undergo the course. For admission, 60% of the total seats are booked for those who have completed graduation (B.A.) in this particular course that is Journalism and Mass Communication. For the rest 40% of setas, the university arranges an entrance exam and the admission is complete based on the marks scored in the entrance exam only.
Faculty
The faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication department consists primarily of guests lecturers (who are mostly aged and experienced in their respective journalistic fields: TV, radio, newspaper, ad agency etc.).They are very helpful and parents-like figures to the students.
