I'm currently in my first year of B.Des at DTU and I think it's a good choice if you're focused on landing a high-paying job. The course curriculum is updated and relevant, but I do feel that they could incorporate more practical learning. The placements for design students are decent, with packages ranging around 10-12 lakhs. The college fee is a bit high, around 15-16 lakhs total, but there are scholarships based on performance. If you have the Delhi quota, then you could even get in with a rank under 1000. Just keep practicing and stay updated with the exam pattern!

Honestly, I got into Engineering without fully understanding what it entailed.

As I progressed at DTU, it became increasingly clear that this path wasn’t for me. And that’s okay. Not everything suits everyone, and accepting that is crucial.

By the end of my third year, I began exploring other options, and CGL emerged as the best choice for several reasons:

• The pride and prestige associated with certain SSC jobs
• A decent salary
• Job security
• A better work-life balance
• More time to spend with family (or at least I believe so)

While there are significant issues with the CGL exam process, I’ve committed to this path, and I’ll deal with whatever challenges SSC throws my way.

You can’t have the best of both worlds.

Note: I don’t regret my journey as an Engineer. In fact, I’m proud to be an alumnus of DTU. Those four years were probably the best of my life. DTU has given me so much, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

B.Des at DTU is still in its early years, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad choice. It’s actually a solid option! In design, you can’t just memorize and regurgitate answers like in other fields. You need to put in real effort. Most students in B.Des at DTU are dedicated to changing perceptions. The journey is tough and challenging, but it helps you stand out. Design offers that chance, and DTU provides the extra opportunity to carve your own path instead of following others.

When it comes to placements, remember that your portfolio and soft skills matter more than the institution's brand name.

Overall, it seems like a good investment if you really want to dive into the design field.

Short Answer - Nope. Not for the next 5 years at least.

Long Answer - There are many, MANY reasons why DTU isn’t a great option for B.Des.

• This is the first course being offered by the entire Department of Design at DTU. Just because a college excels in engineering doesn’t mean it will be good for all other courses.
• DTU is still in the process of hiring professors and assistant professors. The selection was scheduled for July 4, 2018. How effective do you think the faculty and their coordination will be if they’re being hired just a month before the program starts?
• The dean comes from a reputed arts college. However, design today requires more than just artistic skills; a technical background is essential.
• IIT Bombay decided not to conduct placements for their first graduating B.Des batch to encourage self-sufficiency and creative thinking among students. They can afford this because IDC, Powai is one of Asia’s top design colleges with a strong reputation. Other colleges like Srishti have similar approaches, and DTU can adopt this whenever they choose.

The key takeaway is that IDC and Srishti have established their credibility over time, and DTU is still in the early stages.

If you're looking to join the B.Des course at DTU, make sure your UCEED rank is under 200 for the general category. Having a Delhi quota can be a game-changer because it can allow you to get in with a rank under 1000. The competition is tough, but the experience and opportunities you get here are amazing, especially in the design field.

Honestly, waiting for the end semester results at DTU can feel like ages, but they usually take about 4 to 5 weeks to be declared after exams. I’m in my first year of the B.Des program, and while I’m still adjusting to college life, I’ve heard from seniors that it’s pretty standard. At least it gives us some time to get back to our creative projects while we wait!

The fee structure at DTU/NSUT is the same for all categories of students, with no concessions based on caste. However, there are some fee reimbursement schemes from the Delhi government based on economic criteria:

• Merit-cum-Means Linked Financial Assistance Scheme for Higher Education:
  • Families enrolled in the National Food Security Scheme receive 100% assistance.
  • Families with a yearly income of less than 2.5 lakh get 50% assistance.
  • Families with an income between 2.5 - 6 lakh annually receive 25% assistance.
• Higher Education and Skill Development Guarantee Scheme: The government acts as a guarantor for any loan taken by students up to 10 lakh.

You must apply for these schemes separately; they are not automatically processed by the college.

Regarding NIT Delhi and other NITs, they are under the central government and have a different fee structure. SC/ST/PH students receive a 100% remission on tuition fees but are required to pay hostel and mess charges.
