Class 6 Science Chapter 14 Water: Important Topics

The important topics of class 6 science chapter 14 include the following:

  • Sources of Water – The water we use in our daily lives comes from different sources. Water from some sources is potable i.e. drinkable while from others it is non-drinkable.
Ponds, lakes, rivers, wells etc. are some sources of water.
  • Water Cycle – Water cycle is the complete pathway for circulation of water from earth to the atmosphere and back again to the earth. This takes place through different processes.

The different processes that occur in a water cycle are:

Evaporation – The loss of water in the form of water vapours from earth’s surface to the atmosphere is called Evaporation. This happens due to the heat from the sun.

Transpiration – It is the process of loss of water in vapour form through the surface of leaves.

Condensation – When the water vapours rise up in the atmosphere, the tempearture becomes cooler and the vapors are brought together leading to cloud formation.

Precipitation – When the clouds collides due to wind, it leads to rainfall. The water in this way comes back to the earth’s surface.

  • Conservation of Water – Out of the total water available on earth, only a small fraction is usable. Therefore, it is neccesary to conserve water and avoid its wastage.
Rainwater Harvesting is one way to conserve water. In this process, the rainwater is collected and stored to be able to use it later. The water falling from the earth also gets absorbed by the soil and becomes groundwater
