The GRE score is a key requirement for admission to MS or MBA programs abroad. After taking the GRE General Test at the exam center, you’ll get an unofficial score report immediately after finishing the test. This report includes only your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. The Analytical Writing (AWA) score will be available later when ETS releases your official score report, usually within 8 to 10 days after the exam.

Here’s a quick overview of the scoring system:

• Total score range: 260 to 340 (Verbal + Quant combined)
• AWA score range: 0 to 6 (scored separately)
• Final score: Only Verbal and Quant are combined; AWA is reported separately.

You can send your official GRE scores to up to 4 universities for free on the test day, as this is included in your registration fee.

• If you want to send scores to more than 4 universities or request extra score reports later, you’ll need to pay an additional fee.

GRE Score Range

GRE Score in the General Test is the combined total of the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections, each scored from 130 to 170, giving an overall range of 260 to 340. Most test-takers score between 145 and 155 on average. For the GRE Subject Test, the score range is 200 to 990. The table below shows the score range for each section of the GRE.

GRE Score Calculation

GRE Score calculation is done by converting your raw scores into scaled scores. Your raw score is the number of questions you answer correctly in the Verbal and Quant sections. These raw scores are then converted to a scaled score between 130 and 170 to make the results fair for all test-takers.

Here’s how the process works:

• Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning: Raw scores (number of correct answers) are converted into scaled scores ranging from 130 to 170.
• Analytical Writing (AWA): Each essay is first graded by a trained human rater on a 0–6 scale.
• The essay is then scored again by an ETS e-rater (a computer scoring system).
• If both scores are similar, the average becomes your final AWA score.
• If they differ significantly, another human rater reviews the essay to decide the final score.

GRE Score Report

GRE Score reports are available in your ETS account typically within 8 to 10 days after the test. The official score report is automatically sent to the universities you selected on test day. The report can also be printed and includes scores for all 3 sections along with percentiles. Right after finishing the exam, you can see your unofficial scores, which include only the Verbal and Quantitative scores.
