GRE scores are used for MBA, MS, MA, M.Ed., and other Master’s and doctoral programs abroad. The test has 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (AWA). While the Quant and Verbal scores are reported on a scale of 130-170, the AWA is reported on a scale of 0-6. As per ETS, the conducting body of GRE, scores of 153, 160, and 3.6 in Verbal, Quant, and AWA, respectively, are required for Business programs, and 161, 151, and 3.4 for Engineering programs.

GRE unofficial scores for the Quant and Verbal sections will be displayed on your screen at the end of the test. The official scores will be available 8-10 days later on your ETS GRE account, and will remain valid for 5 years. You will get an email when your scores are ready.

GRE Score Range

GRE scores for the 3 sections (Quant, Verbal, and AWA) are reported separately. Therefore, there is no composite or total score range. Universities that accept GRE scores also mention their requirements for each section, and not overall. However, for the GRE Subject Tests (used for PhD admissions for Physics, Psychology, and Math), the total score range is 200-990.

Section Score Range Increment
Verbal Reasoning 130-170 1 point
Quantitative Reasoning 130-170 1 point
Analytical Writing 0-6 0.5 points

How are GRE Scores Calculated?

GRE scores are calculated by converting raw scores to scaled scores. Here’s how scaling is done, and scores are calculated:

  • The Quant and Verbal sections are each divided into 2 modules. The GRE is a section-level adaptive test, which means the difficulty in the second module of each section depends on your performance in the first module.
  • Raw scores for each section are calculated first. These are the number of questions you have answered correctly.
  • These are then converted into scaled scores through a process called equating. This process accounts for differences in the difficulty of the test for different test-takers.
  • ETS uses data from pre-tested questions and historical performance to create conversion tables and formulas.

You can also use external GRE score calculators like Magoosh to estimate your final score.

GRE Percentile Ranking 2026

The GRE percentile rank shows your performance in the test as compared with other test-takers. To understand this, take a look at the table below:

Scaled Score Verbal Reasoning Percentile Quantitative Reasoning Percentile
165-170 95-99 67-91
160-164 84-93 50-63
155-159 65-80 37-47
150-154 39-60 24-34
145-149 21-34 12-21
140-144 10-18 5-10
135-139 3-8 1-4

Source: Latest ETS GRE General Test Interpretive Data

The table shows that if you scored 170 in each section, you did better than 99% test-takers in the Verbal section and 91% test-takers in the Quant section. Which also means that 1% of the test takers secured 170 in the Verbal section and 9% secured 170 in the Quant section.

Does a low AWA score affect Indian applicants significantly?

According to discussions on Quora, most universities focus more on Verbal and Quant unless the program involves heavy writing (e.g., humanities, public policy). However, an AWA below 3.0 may raise concerns.

GRE Score Report 2026

GRE official scores are typically available 8-10 days after the test, though you will be able to view your unofficial scores (only for Verbal and Quant sections) at the end of the test. You will also have the option to cancel or report your scores if you are unsatisfied.

  • If you wish to report, you will have to select up to 4 universities to send your scores to for FREE.
  • If you wish to cancel, you will have 60 days to reinstate them with a fee of INR 5,000.

This is how the GRE score report looks:

Important note on free score reports:

You will have up to 4 universities to send your scores to for FREE, and these must be selected on the test day itself. If you choose to send later, you will have to pay an additional score report fee of INR 2,900 per report.

GRE Score Review

If you are unsatisfied with your GRE scores, you can apply for a recheck after official scores are released. However, this service is only available for the Analytical Writing section. You can apply for a rescoring of this section within 90 days of the release of official scores, with a fee of INR 5,900. The new results will come out within 4 weeks.

For the Quant and Verbal sections, ETS provides a FREE diagnostic service, where you will be able to view detailed information about your performance. This service will be available on your ETS GRE account for up to 15 days.

Reddit Insights from Test-Takers:

  • Score review rarely changes your score significantly.
  • It is only worth it if you received an unusually low AWA score (e.g., 2.5 or below).

How many times can Indian students take the GRE in a year?

As per the Educational Testing Service (ETS), you can take the GRE once every 21 days, up to 5 times in a rolling 12-month period. There is no lifetime limit.

How to Send GRE Scores to Universities?

GRE scores are sent only by ETS. Universities do not accept unofficial or self-reported scores. The available options differ between on the test day (free reports) and after the test day (paid additional reports).

  • Designated right after viewing unofficial Verbal and Quant scores at the test center.

    • Most Recent: Only scores from your current (today's) test administration.
    • All: Scores from all GRE General Test administrations in the last 5 years.
  • No Any option here (cannot pick specific past dates).
  • ETS sends official reports automatically 8-10 days later (once Analytical Writing is scored).

What is a Good GRE Score?

A good GRE score depends on the requirements of your target university and program. While many universities abroad have become test-optional, students still submit their standardized test scores to make their application stand out.

The table below gives a list of top universities abroad and the average GRE score submitted by admitted students.

University Average Verbal Score Average Quant Score
Harvard University 164 164
University of Chicago 161 163
Yale University 163 166
Columbia University 163 163
MIT Not mentioned 159-170
Stanford University 164 164
University of Pennsylvania 162 163
Duke University 164 164

Note: The above scores are taken from the class profile of the MBA Co’27 of the respective universities’ B-schools. Universities have different requirements for different programs. Therefore, you must carefully check the entry requirements of your target program.

If you are planning to pursue an MBA abroad, but don't know which exam to take, check out the article below:

GRE vs GMAT: Which is Better for an MBA Abroad?

Do US universities prefer the GRE over GMAT for MBA?

Most US B-schools now accept both GRE and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores equally. However, some Indian applicants choose the GRE for flexibility if applying to both MBA and MS programs.

GRE scores are reported separately for Verbal, Quant, and AWA, and remain valid for 5 years. Universities assess section-wise performance, not a total score. Since score expectations vary by program, students should review target requirements carefully and use percentile data to judge their competitiveness.

FAQs

Ques. Is the GRE harder for Indian students because of Quant competition?

Ans. Many Indian students on forums like Reddit report that Quant percentiles are highly competitive due to strong math backgrounds of test-takers from India and China. Even a small drop in scaled score can significantly reduce your Quant percentile.

Ques. Is the GRE accepted by Canadian and European universities?

Ans. Yes, many universities in Canada and Europe accept GRE scores, but requirements vary by program. Always check the official program page before applying.

Ques. Can GRE scores be used for scholarships or funding decisions?

Ans. Yes, some universities use strong GRE scores to support scholarship or assistantship decisions, especially for MS and PhD programs. A higher Quant score can strengthen funding chances in STEM fields.

Ques. Is GRE required for US student visa approval?

Ans. No, the GRE is not required for a US visa. It is only for university admission. Visa decisions depend on documents like the I-20, financial proof, and interview performance.

Ques. Can Indian students send updated GRE scores after applying?

Ans. Yes, many universities allow you to upload updated scores before application deadlines. Use ScoreSelect through ETS to send improved scores if you retake the test.

A good GRE Quant score is the score that will give you the best chance at getting into the programs you are applying to. The GRE Quant section is scored on a scale of 130 to 170 in 1-point increments. On this scale, 170 is the highest possible score and 130 is the lowest. So, if your only goal is to score a little higher than average, aim for a total score above 306.
