GRE registration can be done online on the official ETS (the conducting body) website. The GRE test is of 2 types:
- General Test: Required for most master’s programs abroad.
- Subject Tests: For PhD programs in Psychology, Physics, or Maths.
The GRE exam fee for the General test is INR 22,000, and that for the Subject Tests is INR 14,500. At the time of registration, it is seen that the base fee for the General test is INR 19,110. After adding taxes like the VAT, the total payable amount becomes INR 23,452.
While no document is required at the time of registration, a valid Indian passport is mandatory to be physically (not digitally) presented at the test center on the test day. Make sure that the name you enter during registration exactly matches that on the passport. Even minor discrepancies can lead to test cancellations, and no fee will be refunded.
The GRE test can be taken both at test centers and at home. GRE test dates are available throughout the year, with 15-20 dates a month for the test center-delivered exam, and every day for the at-home test. However, you are advised to book a test at least 2-3 months in advance, as slots fill up quickly, especially during university application deadlines and holidays.

Tips for Indian Students:
- Test centers in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata fill up quickly, especially during holidays. Therefore, you are advised to register your test at least 2-3 months in advance.
- Many students prefer test centers in India due to fewer technical risks, like glitches, proctor interruptions, test cancellations due to background noise, or power cut issues.
GRE Eligibility
The Graduate Record Examination is meant for students who want to pursue Master’s programs abroad. Though there are no eligibility criteria like age limit or educational qualifications, it is mainly taken by college graduates or students currently pursuing undergraduate studies.
Since the GRE scores remain valid for 5 years, you can take it at least in your 1st year of college, excluding re-attempts.
GRE registration in 2026 is a straightforward online process through the official ETS website, but candidates should carefully review fees, policies, and ID requirements before booking. Since test slots fill quickly and rescheduling involves additional costs, planning your test date in advance is important. Also, as many universities have made the GRE optional, checking individual program requirements before registering can help avoid unnecessary expenses.
