GRE exam dates for the General test are available throughout the year, with around 15-20 dates a month for the test center-delivered mode. For the at-home edition, the dates are available every day, with time slots starting from 12 AM to 11:30 PM IST. However, you need to note that while many GRE dates are available for test centers in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, only a few (3-4 dates a month) are available for tier-2 cities like Chandigarh, Kochi, and Vijayawada.

ETS, the conducting body of GRE, also offers the GRE Subject Tests, in 3 subjects: Psychology, Maths, and Physics. These tests are mainly used for admissions to PhD programs in programs related to these subjects. These tests are available in 3 time windows in a year: September, October, and April.

GRE Subject Test Dates 2026

The GRE Subject Tests (Physics, Psychology, Maths) are held in 3 exam sessions, as given below:

• September 8, 2025, to September 21, 2025
• October 13, 2025, to October 26, 2025
• April 20, 2026, to May 3, 2026

Note: The Subject Tests can only be taken at test centers. At-home testing is currently unavailable.

Tips for Indian Students

3. Plan for a Possible Retake: You can take the GRE up to 5 times a year with a 21-day gap between attempts. Ideally, take your first attempt early enough to allow a retake if needed.

4. Choose Test Date and Time Wisely:

• Weekday slots are usually less crowded than weekends.
• For GRE at Home, prefer morning or early afternoon slots to avoid fatigue and technical issues.

5. Tier-2 City Candidates Should Book Sooner: Cities like Chandigarh, Kochi, and Vijayawada often have only 3-4 dates per month. Check availability early using the ETS scheduler.

6. Avoid Clashes with Exams or Work Deadlines: Don’t schedule during semester exams, placement season, or major work deadlines.

7. Subject Test Candidates, Register Early: GRE Subject Tests are offered only in April, September, and October and are available only at test centers. Seats are limited.
