IISER Mohali Review of 2nd year Under-graduate

Likes

The structure, and internship opportunities along with mess are really wonderful, along with permission to go anywhere within and outside campus.
The crowd and diversity of campus is rich and wonderful.
The fee is really low compared to other government institutes

Dislikes

Opportunities in placement are scattered
No media center and PR in institute which makes it hard to promote it.

Admission:

I did not apply for any other instutte as i wanted to come ti IISER,mohali only given i wanted to do research in my future. I did not wanted to go into any engineering college despite cleering my JEE-Mains. This was my top priority. For IISER,Mohali i cleared iiser aptitude test and got a seat here. There are cutoffs for 7 IISER's over the country with IISER,mohali with third highest cutoff. Out of total securing about 50-70% overall is good enough to secure a seat here.

Life at IISER M: A hitchhiker's guide

Likes

Open, large and liberal campus, (almost) coed hostels, green patches all around, no curfew in hostels apart from main gate curfew, lively student life, fantastic amenities (gym, club rooms). Girls to boys ratio in our batch was almost 1:1
As scientists and in terms of their research work, faculty is fantastic. Teaching needs work but can be managed if you study enough (and know which resources to study from)
World class exposure to academia and research in the natural sciences. Placements are low, but you don't come to IISER for placements--you come to IISERs for academia and research, and students are adequately trained for that.

Dislikes

Administration can be quite slow at times to work, and often a pain to deal with. Administrative work is just like any other central government office unless pushed: extremely lethargic until push comes to shove
Students tend to misuse their freedoms a bit too much, and that is something which I have seen personally. This is something every prospective student should keep in mind
Dean Academics Office is sometimes also quite inefficient, and can be a huge pain to deal with

Admission:

I did not want to apply to other colleges to be fair. I wanted to join an IISER for my higher studies (or maybe IISc/NISER). I couldn't get into IISc/NISER since I did not qualify, but I qualified the entrance test for IISERs (IAT: IISER Aptitude Test for all the 7 IISERs in the country) and got in, ultimately ending up at Mohali during the counselling process. I was studying at Jadavpur University for a couple of months before joining IISER Mohali, and because IISER was my dream, I left JU for IISER M. Whatever I am, a lot of it is because of my education at IISER, something which I perhaps would not have got at JU (no hate towards JU though--it is a great place as well) and I am thankful for it in many ways. There are currently 2 ways to get into IISERs: IAT, and JEE Advanced. For Advanced , you need to get a rank below 10000 to sit for counselling, and in IAT it depends--generally a general rank of <=2000 should get you an IISER. One thing--OLDER IISER DOESNT MEAN BETTER IISER. It COMPLETELY depends on your research interests (which depends on the Faculty at each IISER) and is completely a personal choice. I prefer Mohali in many ways over other IISERs like Pune/Kolkata for I feel our Astro dept is very good compared to the rest--we can even claim an astronomy minor if we want to here. So it is completely a personal choice. Counselling can be stressful, but it is a life changing experience.

IISER mohali glimpses

Likes

Positivism, inclusiveness, tidiness, greenery, vast research topics.
Student - professor communication are great. They will guide us if we reach out to them.
Co ed hostels, mess food is great. No curfew.

Dislikes

Climate is extreme during summer and winter.

Admission:

I have written IAT, a common entrance teat for all IISERs. My preference list was: Pune Mohali Kolkata Thiruvananthapuram Berhampur Tirupati. I got accepted at mohali and got rejected by pune. My marks were slightly lower than cutoff for pune.

Student life at IISER Mohali

Likes

Campus environment is very nice, almost everyone is helpful
The campus is very clean and green, with a lot of trees and a diversity of flora and fauna
Each student is assigned a personal mentor, which is a faculty member, to help them with their personal or academic issues, if they face any

Dislikes

Some of the professors are not that good at teaching
Placement opportunities are good only if you are good in studies, else you'll see for yourself.
Although there hasn't been any case of snake bite yet, but you need to be careful as there can be some venomous snakes around.

Admission:

I chose this college over the other colleges that I applied to, because it is a national level institute that is excellent in academics, and a boon for people who want to do research. Also, it was nearest to my home than the other colleges. The admission process of IISER Mohali is through 3 channels - JEE-Advanced channel, KVPY channel and IAT channel. Most of the students come through the IAT channel, in which there is a computer based test consisting of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Then according to the students' marks, the merit list is prepared after which the counseling process takes place jointly for all the IISERs in the country. For the detailed cutoffs, you can visit the website of iiser admission. The overall admission experience was pretty good. Apart from IISER, I had applied for PAU Ludhiana BSc Hons Agriculture and PGI Chandigarh Nursing and Paramedical. I got admission in all of them but as I wanted to do research, I chose IISER Mohali over the others.

An Institute of excellence in Science

Likes

Mess food i liked a lot. Hygienic food and also affordable
The people here are very scientific oriented
The library has many books and internet is good

Dislikes

Hectic schedule. There is a lot to study and hard exams
Subjects are tough which makes it difficult to study
Clubs are less in number and funding to clubs is less

I had applied for NITs but i could not get them because of less percentile. I chose thisbcollege because I did not not get my dream colleges. Yes I got rejection from IISc and NITs because my score was very low. Minimum eligibilty is 60% in 12th and Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Mathematics are mandatory

GLIMPSES OF IISER MOHALI

Likes

The campus. Its beautiful in most of the seasons. There are lots of greenery.
The distance between hostels and the college is very short. Woke up late? No tension, just come out of the hostel and there is the LHC.
Great seniors. They are just like batchmates, friends.

Dislikes

The pollution in the winter is too high.
The placement cell is inactive and basically useless.

Admission:

Students who passed higher secondary exam call apply for this course (above 75 percentile). The for is out every year in official IAT examination, once qualified the exam, you have to go through counseling to choose this college and admit in it. The exam is annual. For improvement, I would say ki the administration of the institute have to be more consistent with the dates they have declared.

Overview of IISER Mohali

Likes

The campus environment is quite good. Seniors here are quite helpful.
We get good research environment and curiosity is encouraged by professors and peers.
The professor here are quite good at there field and teaching, except for a few exceptions.

Dislikes

The mess food is not the best in comparison to the price charged.
The campus is located in a very hot and polluted region.
Some lab facilities have not been used since long and are not in a very good condition

Admission:

The admission process was available through3 channels when I took admission- KVPY, JEE Advance and SBC. I got my admission through SBC channel which consisnt of CBT of 4 subjects, physics maths chemistry and biology. Each subject consisting of 15 questions of 5 marka. The quality and standards of question are quite good compared to other exams like NEET and JEE Mains, and memorising sets of questions and answers doesn't help much. The exam does check for critical thinking skills in field of science. Cut off varies every year depending on number of sudent and what they scored but scoring above 150 should so do the work

IISER Mohali : another home with love and science

Likes

I love the idea of co-ed hostels in the campus. The environment it provides end all kind of discrimination from region to religion and gender.
The proffesor of the institute are very friendly and engaging. They meet abd talk with us even after official time and always willing to help

Dislikes

The lack of helpfulness of Admins of university is really disappointing, from supporting students welfare to caring about their health

Admission:

Right now the students are only eligible for admission thorugh IAT exam. And they can apply for admission directly through the IAT website, and after booking seat then can register for the college in the link sent to mail by the dean of academics of IISERM. There is reservation for the SC, ST and OBCs. They also get benifit of less fee. The admission process could be easier with less lengthy forms and data could be directly collected from our admit card of the exams. Previously studnet could take admission through JEE Adv and KVPY too. The difficulty of these exams are moderate to hard.

Likes

Amazing campus, nice work environment, amazing connections and lab equipments. Good hostel independence and mess food

Admission:

I applied through IAT through counselling, the cutoff was around 2200 rank for General. One of the main things that you need to vary of is to pay SAF of 35,000 during counseling, other than that the admission process should go smoothly while you do need to be careful and float and freeze at the right time.
