MMCARI MD (Psychiatry) FAQs
Ques. What is the total fee for MD Psychiatry at MMCARI, Mysore?
Ans. The total tuition fee for the 3-year MD Psychiatry programme at MMCARI under the government quota is approximately Rs. 3,42,450 for the entire course. This is a government institution with no management or NRI quota seats. Hostel charges are separate at approximately Rs. 5,000 per month. PG residents also receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 55,000, which significantly offsets living expenses.
Ques. How competitive is MD Psychiatry admission at MMCARI?
Ans. MD Psychiatry at MMCARI has moderate competition. Based on 2023 NEET PG data, the AIQ General category closing score was approximately 510, and the 2024 AIQ closing rank was approximately 16,068. With only 2 seats, the competition can vary year to year. Psychiatry is increasingly popular as a specialisation due to growing awareness of mental health, but it remains less competitive than top clinical branches like Radiodiagnosis or Paediatrics.
Ques. What are the career prospects after MD Psychiatry from MMCARI?
Ans. MD Psychiatry graduates from MMCARI have excellent career prospects given India's significant shortage of psychiatrists. Career options include clinical practice in government and private hospitals, private psychiatric clinics, academic positions in medical colleges, research in mental health, roles in de-addiction centres, and positions in corporate wellness programmes. The National Mental Health Programme and various government initiatives have also increased demand for psychiatrists in public health settings.
Ques. Is there a bond/service obligation after completing MD Psychiatry at MMCARI?
Ans. Yes. All PG students admitted to MMCARI are required to sign a compulsory service bond of 3 years. If a student fails to complete the mandatory rural/government service after the course, a penalty of Rs. 50 lakhs is levied. This is a standard requirement for all government medical college PG admissions in Karnataka.
Ques. Can candidates from outside Karnataka apply for MD Psychiatry at MMCARI?
Ans. Yes. 50% of MD seats at MMCARI fall under the All India Quota (AIQ), which is open to candidates from all states through MCC counselling. The remaining 50% are state quota seats managed by KEA, primarily for Karnataka domicile candidates. With only 2 seats total, there is essentially 1 AIQ seat and 1 state quota seat available each year.
Ques. Is MD Psychiatry a good specialisation choice given the current mental health landscape in India?
Ans. Yes, MD Psychiatry is an increasingly valuable specialisation. India has a treatment gap of over 80% for mental health disorders, with a severe shortage of psychiatrists (approximately 0.3 psychiatrists per 1,00,000 population against the WHO recommendation of 3 per 1,00,000). The Mental Healthcare Act 2017 and growing awareness have increased demand for psychiatric services. Psychiatrists in India can build successful practices in both urban and semi-urban settings, and the specialisation offers a good work-life balance compared to many surgical branches.
