WBJEE 2026 Marking Scheme: Category-wise Rules
WBJEE uses a three-category system. Each category carries different marks and different negative marking rules. Understanding all three is essential before you start calculating your score.
- Category I has the largest share of questions (around 50 out of 75 in Mathematics alone). Missing even 10 questions in this category costs you 2.5 marks in negative marking.
- Category II questions are worth 2 marks each but carry heavier negative marking (-0.5). A wrong attempt here costs you 2.5 marks in net terms (losing 2 and getting -0.5).
- Category III is the only safe zone in the paper. You cannot lose marks here, but you only get full credit if you select all correct options correctly.
| Category | Correct Answer | Wrong Answer | Unattempted | No. of Correct Options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Category I | +1 mark | -0.25 marks | 0 marks | Only 1 correct option |
| Category II | +2 marks | -0.5 marks | 0 marks | Only 1 correct option |
| Category III | +2 marks (all correct options marked) | 0 marks (no negative marking) | 0 marks | One or more correct options |

Ques. What happens if I mark two options in a Category I question?
Ans. Any combination of more than one option in Category I is treated as an incorrect response. You will lose 0.25 marks for that question.
Ques. Is there negative marking in Category III?
Ans. No. Category III questions carry no negative marking. However, you must mark all the correct options to receive full marks. A partially correct response (some correct options marked, no incorrect options) earns partial marks using the formula: 2 x (correct options you marked) / (total correct options for that question).
How is the WBJEE score calculated?
The formula to calculate your WBJEE total score is straightforward. Apply it separately for each category, then add up all three totals.

Worked Example: How to calculate marks directly from answer key?
- In this example, the student correctly attempts 30 out of 50 Category I questions in Mathematics. Wrong attempts (10) cost only 2.5 marks total, showing how minor negative marking is in this category.
- Avoiding wrong answers in Category II matters more: a single wrong attempt here reduces your net score by 2.5 marks (losing 2 you could have scored, plus -0.5 penalty).
- The student scores 10 full marks in Category III simply by leaving uncertain questions unattempted. There is no penalty for this.
| Category | Correct | Wrong | Unattempted | Marks per Correct | Negative per Wrong | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Category I | 30 | 10 | 10 | +1 | -0.25 | (30 x 1) - (10 x 0.25) = 27.5 |
| Category II | 8 | 3 | 4 | +2 | -0.5 | (8 x 2) - (3 x 0.5) = 14.5 |
| Category III | 5 (fully correct) | 0 | 5 | +2 | None | (5 x 2) = 10 |
| Total (Mathematics) | 52 / 100 | |||||
Apply the same method for Physics and Chemistry. Then add all three subject scores to get your estimated total out of 200.

Ques. How do I get my OMR response sheet to compare with the answer key?
Ans. WBJEEB releases the OMR response sheet on the official portal along with or shortly after the provisional answer key. Log in to wbjeeb.nic.in with your application number and password to view and download your OMR image. Match each marked option with the answer key to count your correct and wrong responses per category.
Ques. Will my calculated score match the official WBJEE result?
Ans. Your self-calculated score is an estimate only. The final WBJEE result is prepared using the official final answer key (released after all objections are reviewed). If any objections are accepted and answers are revised, the final score may differ from your provisional calculation.
