BITS Pilani runs admissions across multiple iterations, typically five to seven per cycle. Iteration 4 falls mid-process, meaning one to three more rounds are likely remaining. Each iteration gives you a fresh chance to move up your preference list. The three response options — Upgrade, Slide, and Freeze — determine whether you stay in that pool or lock in what you currently hold. Choosing Freeze at this stage is permanent: you exit all future iterations immediately.

• Upgrade: Your current seat is retained as a guaranteed backup. You enter the next iteration for a possible move to any higher-ranked preference across all three BITS campuses.
• Slide: Same as Upgrade but restricted to higher-ranked preferences at your current campus only — useful when you want a better branch without changing cities.
• Freeze: You confirm your current allotment as final and exit all further iterations permanently. No revision is possible after this choice.

With multiple iterations still remaining after Iteration 4, staying in the Upgrade pool costs you nothing except the time before the next result. These situations clearly favour choosing Upgrade:

• Your BITSAT score is within 5–10 marks of your target branch’s 2025 final closing score. Closing scores typically drop 3–7 marks across later iterations as more students freeze out of the pool.
• Your preference list above your current allotment is accurate — every entry above your current seat is a branch and campus you genuinely want.
• You are targeting a better branch at your same campus — in this case, use Slide instead of Upgrade to narrow the competition pool.
• You received a branch you consider a fallback (such as Chemistry or Civil Engineering) and your score is competitive for ECE or CS at another campus.
• You have not yet received your first-preference allotment and the gap is small enough to be realistic.

When Freezing Is the Right Call

Freezing makes sense when your current allotment already matches your best realistic outcome, or when the risk of an unwanted upgrade outweighs the benefit of waiting. Freeze when:

• Your current branch and campus are your top remaining realistic preference and no further movement would improve your situation.
• Your preference list above your current seat contains programmes you no longer want but have not updated. The system will move you to them automatically if a seat opens — and the move is binding.
• Your score is more than 15 marks below your target branch’s 2025 closing score. Movement of that scale is unlikely in the remaining iterations.
• You need to begin campus formalities — hostel registration, travel booking, or scholarship applications — that require a confirmed seat number.
• You are satisfied with your current allotment and have no strong pull toward a higher-listed programme.

Why Your Preference Order Matters Most

The single most common mistake at this stage is choosing Upgrade without first reviewing the preference list. After multiple iterations, your situation has changed — branches you listed early may no longer be desirable. The system will automatically move you to whatever is ranked highest in your active list, even if you no longer want it.

Before responding to Iteration 4, complete these steps in order:

1. Log in to the BITS Pilani admissions portal with your application credentials.
2. Open your active preference list and review every programme ranked above your current allotment.
3. Remove or reorder any entry you would not accept as an upgrade — do not leave programmes listed that you would regret receiving.
4. Save the revised preference order before you submit your iteration response.
5. Only after confirming the list is accurate, select Upgrade, Slide, or Freeze and submit.

If you want to upgrade only within your current campus, set your response to Slide after updating the list. This narrows competition to students at your campus only and can improve your chances of movement compared to the full Upgrade pool.
