JBIMS Mumbai Admissions: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 26 Reviews

The JBIMS MHRD admission process for 2023-25 comprised two primary stages: the qualifying exam and the GDPI WAT. Candidates were shortlisted based on their performance in CAT, MAHCET, or the optional JBIMS entrance test. A score of at least 90 percentile in CET and 85 percentile in CAT was generally expected for general category applicants. An additional eligibility criterion was maintaining at least 60% in undergraduate education, while some noted a requirement for maintaining 55% in Class 10 and 12.

The process initially involved shortlisting around 300 candidates for 30 seats based on entrance exam scores. The college emphasized decision-making, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and general knowledge in the examination. The second stage involved writing a 300-word Statement of Purpose (SOP), followed by a group discussion and personal interview, held in-person over one or two days, depending on scheduling. The admission process was streamlined, with results released a week after assessments.

Final selections were determined by combining entrance exam scores and GDPI WAT performance. Candidates were encouraged to practice previous years' papers to prepare for entrance tests. Information about the admission process, fees, and application timelines (typically April-May) was readily available on the JBIMS website. The application fee is Rs. 1000 or Rs. 1500, and reservation policies are in line with Mumbai University's criteria. Suggestions from reviews emphasized a desire for transparent shortlisting processes and the introduction of additional assessment formats, like extempore speeches or case studies, to evaluate communication and critical thinking abilities.

Admission:

Msc Finance at JBIMS considers MAH-MBA-CET, CAT scores for shortlisting. Otherthan above mentioned exams if one has cleared UPSC CSE Mains exam can also apply for MSc Finance. For shortlisting open candidates 97 percentile is a minimum requirement. After one gets shortlisted there is a WAT round where one has to write an essay of 300 words in 10 minutes. Next round is of GD (Group discussion) where around 12 candidates are formed in a group and one topic is given to have discussion which lasts usually for around 30 minutes, the final round is of PI (personal interview) here industry experts are at interview panel, they go through your resume and asks relative questions about finance and economics.

JBIMS Mumbai: 26 Answered Questions

What exactly do I need to do to get into JBIMS Mumbai?

Yatika Mehla
Kokila SinghMBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

As a candidate interested in pursuing an MBA from JBIMS, you should aim to score a 99.97 percentile or higher in the MH-CET examination. Currently, JBIMS does not conduct a GDPI, and admission is based on the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) round, organized by the DTE. The institute has a limited number of 120 seats.

JBIMS has a relatively low fee structure, yet it offers exceptional placement opportunities. During the 2022 placement drive, the median CTC was INR 26.48 LPA, and the highest salary offered was INR 42 LPA. This highlights the institute's excellent return on investment (ROI) for its students.

JBIMS is a top B-school with a big brand value, high-quality faculty members, a rich alumni network, and excellent placement opportunities. It's the perfect place to fulfill your dream of pursuing an MBA.

Do you know anyone who got into a top b-school (IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS, NM, IIFT, FMS etc.) with average UG percentage?

Ashish MetkarMBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

Yes, I do know a friend who managed to get calls from many top B Schools despite having an average Undergraduate Score. Her profile looked like this

  • 10th- 76%
  • 12th- 68%
  • UG- 64%

Although her marks witnessed a gradual decline, she was lucky enough to study at XLRI. Past academics are considered as one but not the major factors at XLRI, unlike IIMs that focus a lot on past academics. A good XAT and GD-PI score can compensate for your poor academic record at XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS. NITIE is a top B School that does not consider past academics at all. My friend with her average profile managed to convert NITIE, XIMB, and all the IIMs except for the top ones obviously. So we can safely assume that admission into these top B Schools is possible even with an average profile provided that you score excellently in the CAT or XAT and the GDPI round.

How tough is getting into JBIMS?

Rituparna Nath
Milind ThakurStudent of Life

It certainly is quite tough to get into JBIMS, especially for the full-time MMS Program. I’ve r the last few years JBIMS witnessed 3 admission procedures

Percentile required 99.5: Initially followed an admission procedure that included CET (200) + GD (17) + PI (17) + Past Academic Record (2) + Work Experience (2). This procedure was discontinued around 2012. Only 120 students were allotted a seat out of 10000 and the percentile required was around 99.5.

Percentile required 99.85: This admission procedure did not include the GD-PI round and the admission was done solely on the basis of a written test. This was a book for candidates who had average academic backgrounds and were very excellent in written English. However, this process could not focus on soft skills and other aspects of the candidate's profile so were discontinued.

Autonomous Procedure: The current procedure is an autonomous one wherein the CAT/CET scores are considered along with GD PI WAT rounds. The weightage given to the written test has been reduced so as to enable candidates with lower percentile like 98.9 to get a chance too. They can prove themselves in the GD-PI round and hence make it into JBIMS. Approximately from every GE one candidate gets admission. One may think this is easy when in reality the competition is extremely tough due to the quality of the candidates. Each one of them is talented in one or the other areas and gives an edge to the other. There is no safe score as one may not get in even after scoring 99 percentile whereas one may get admitted even with 98 percentile. It all depends on your overall profile.

Is it worth to join an MBA at JBIMS at the age of 28 having lot of academic gaps and no any work experience?

Manish JainStudied Finance at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

Joining JBIMS for MBA without any work experience may have a slight drawback. Whether the overall experience will be worth it or not, depends on the exact purpose with which you have started on this journey.

With all honesty, your lack of experience and academic gaps will have a negative impact on your placements. Getting higher packages will be almost impossible as companies might object to your flaw in the profile. I am not saying that MBA will be a bad choice, but it will benefit you academically and not financially. It will increase your knowledge and skills and add value to your CV thereby improving your initial situation. But as far as placements are concerned, you will be slightly at a disadvantage to others.

You will be eligible for the final placements only and not the lateral ones. Many companies may or may not put filters on age, work experience, and academics. It all depends on the particular company and your luck. With excellent communication skills and content building, you can make your way into the interview and much more. But you have to strive hard for a very long time as the race is a difficult one for you. If you can prepare well with no pressure or expectations, especially during the summer internship process, you should be fine.

Coming to the knowledge and skills that you will acquire during the MBA, it will certainly have a positive impact on you. You will be able to get rid of negativity and focus on acquiring maximum knowledge.

Still, at the end of the day, I will advise you to get a job and get a level of experience to make your journey a bit easier.

Is it advisable to settle on JBIMS, if one only aimed for IIM's?

Ashish PaiStudied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

Comparing JBIMS with IIMs is highly unjustified as IIMs are way ahead of JBIMS or FMS even if we consider the ROI. They are unique in many aspects such as

  • IIM ABC and ISB is the only B-schools that offer Investment banking profiles in placement. Even if we look at other profiles, it’s easy to infer that they are much superior in terms of quality than the ones offered at JBIMS.
  • Being a pass out of IIMs or ISB, you have an upper hand in the higher spectrum of one’s career, i.e, leadership roles.
  • JBIMS or FMS lack the general ambiance and culture of a typical B School due to a lack of residential and campus facilities.
  • The peer quality of IIMS and ISB are much better than JBIMS whose gender ratio, diversity, and competitive exam are very one-dimensional.
  • The only significant aspect of JBIMS is the ROI which when negated makes JBIMS as mediocre as SP Jain and MDI.
  • The placement statistics of JBIMS are much similar to that of new IIMs or average B Schools like MDI, and SP Jain. They are in no way in comparison to the top IIMs even with batch sizes as small as 120.

So one should choose JBIMS or FMS over IIM only if one wants to spend low fees, take no loans, or pursue MBA in Mumbai or Delhi.

How difficult is it to get into JBIMS, Mumbai considering the fact that the candidate is not a resident of Mumbai?

Nikunj BhatiaStudied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

As long as you are a Maharashtra resident, getting admission to JBIMS is not that difficult. Out of 120 seats, 102 seats are allotted to Maharashtrian candidates and the additional caste card will further increase your chances. Other than Maharashtra you will have to target 99.99. To ensure a good CET score

  • Prepare well for CET and strengthen your basics
  • Attempt a lot of mocks
  • Pay more attention to logical reasonings
  • In the quant section focus on m DI and DS the most
  • Practice visual reasoning thoroughly
  • Improve your speed and efficiency

If by the difficulty you mean the probability of getting into JBIMS then here it is. Out of 100k candidates, only 120 are selected. For some, this may be a discouraging factor but if you look on the bright side, being along the 120 will guarantee a bright future.

Can students outside Maharashtra get into JBIMS?

Mahima SethiMBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

Admission to JBIMS can be gained through two methods: Direct admission based on written scores in CET and other All India entrance tests, or shortlisting based on CAT/CET scores and GD-PI.

For the Direct admission method, 15% of the total intake will be set aside for All India seats. This includes seats for Maharashtra residents, as well as a maximum of 18 seats for students from outside of Maharashtra. The cutoff for these seats is generally a score of 99.98 or higher in any of the entrance tests, such as CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA, or CET. Additionally, there are 2 seats set aside for students from Jammu and Kashmir, which are not counted among the 18 outside Maharashtra seats.

For the Shortlisting method, there is no fixed quota. Students with a score of 99 percentile or higher, a good profile, and successful performance in the GDPI can be admitted. When this method was followed in the past, students with scores as low as 97 percentile received calls, but most admitted students had scores of 98.8 or higher in CET or CAT. This method promotes diversity and fairness, but the method used for admission is ultimately up to the discretion of the institute.

In conclusion, students from outside of Maharashtra can get into JBIMS as long as they have a strong written score and perform well in the selection process.

What should be the study plan to get into JBIMS?

Tanuj ChandraStudent Mentor at Catking

To gain admission into JBIMS, it is essential to possess more than just a study plan. A positive mindset, consistency, and speed are key to success.

JBIMS admission procedure is managed through DTE. For Maharashtra-based candidates, CET scores are accepted. There is a reservation for All India Seats, where one may apply through CAT, ATMA, or MAT. It is important to keep in mind that focusing on the JBIMS cutoff for CET or any other exam is not recommended, as the school is highly sought after and the intake for General Candidates is approximately 50. Therefore, aim to rank first in CET or any other exams accepted by JBIMS, as only the top 50 students are enrolled.

As for the study plan, it is imperative to have a strong grasp of basics and Vedic maths. The CET exam consists of 200 questions and has a duration of 150 minutes, equating to roughly 30-40 seconds per question. Therefore, it is crucial to be quick with calculations. A mentor should focus on speed and accuracy while preparing students for the exam.

  • Start by learning tables, squares, cubes, and formulas, and ensure to revise them weekly.
  • Take one mock CET exam, and analyze both your strong and weak sections.
  • Utilize the option to toggle between sections by attempting the section where you score better first, as this will boost confidence during the weaker sections.
  • Since there is no negative marking in CET, try to attempt as many questions as possible. Analyze your weaker areas and make a list of them.
  • Ensure a clear understanding of concepts for topics causing difficulties by solving 5-10 questions daily. This will increase comfort and scores.
  • Practice solving at least 10 abstract reasoning questions daily. This is the easiest and quickest section to clear, with 25 questions in CET based on abstract reasoning. With regular practice, this section can be cleared in 15 minutes with 95% accuracy.
  • In the Verbal section, focus on being clear with grammar and vocabulary, with the main emphasis on speed. Practice one RC daily and aim to solve it in under 5 minutes.
  • To improve speed in Quants and DI, learn Vedic Maths and shortcut tricks. Regularly revise formulas.
  • For LR, practice 5-10 questions daily and one question of Seating Arrangement and Puzzles each.
  • Continuously give sectional mocks to increase accuracy and once concepts have been completed, start taking full-length mocks. Analyze the first three mocks, set a strategy, and then focus on implementing it while solving all other available mocks. This will help improve speed, and accuracy, and build confidence.

By following these steps, one can effectively prepare for CET and gain admission into JBIMS.

I am 26 years old and I am getting admission to Chetna College for a full-time MBA. Should I take it or study for another year for IIM or JBIMS?

Mahima BhallaFormer Joint Vice President & Company Secretary (2009–2016)

Before applying for an MBA program at any institution, be it Chetna College, IIM, or JBIMS, it is recommended that you take the following steps:

  • Thoroughly review the college website and gather information from social media platforms, especially Quora, to understand the college's reputation.
  • Ensure that the college you are considering offers a robust curriculum, experienced faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a strong track record of successful campus placements.
  • Reach out to alumni who have completed the MBA program from the college to understand their experiences and career growth.
  • Determine if financial institutions are willing to provide loans to support the cost of the MBA program, as students of reputable institutions usually do not face difficulties in securing bank loans.
  • Visit the college campus to get a firsthand experience of the college environment and facilities. This step is extremely crucial.

Additionally, it is noted that you are 26 years old and it is mentioned that you did not immediately start working after graduation. The inquiry is made as to what you have been doing since graduation, and if you have spent all of this time preparing for the CAT exam.
