George Washington University Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at GWU splits by level. Undergraduate seats need a strong Class XII record; graduate seats need a four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian institution with a competitive GPA equivalent. English-proficiency floors vary by school.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 75 percent or higher, with English as a subject of study.
  • UG STEM tracks: Mathematics and Physics through Class XII for engineering and computer science.
  • PG general entry: Four-year bachelor’s at 3.0 GPA (around 65-70 percent Indian) from a recognised university.
  • PG STEM/Business: Bachelor’s in a related discipline; some programs prefer 3.2 GPA (around 70-75 percent).
  • PhD entry: Master’s preferred, with GPA 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale; bachelor’s-only entry requires 3.3.

English minimums differ by school. Graduate School general floor is TOEFL iBT 81, IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo English Test 110. Undergraduate applicants need TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5 or PTE 65 or DET 120. Elliott School master’s and SEAS doctoral applicants must clear a higher bar of TOEFL 100 / IELTS 7.0.

George Washington University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

GWU does not publish a blanket MOI waiver. Indian applicants whose undergraduate degree was taught fully in English at an institution in a recognised English-medium country may qualify for an exemption at some schools, but Indian-university coursework does not automatically waive the test. Undergraduate applicants who score TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.5, or Duolingo 130 can have the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) bridge course waived, though they still need the test on record.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official GWU international graduate applicants page for your chosen program before applying.

George Washington University PG Programs and Scores

George Washington University runs roughly 250 master’s programs across 14 schools. Indian graduate applicants cluster around the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS), the School of Business, and the Elliott School of International Affairs. Base tuition for master’s programs ranges from USD 30,825 (around INR 29.39 Lakhs) to USD 65,808 (around INR 62.75 Lakhs) per year — check the USA MS universities list for peer-programme fee comparisons and Collegedunia’s Fees page for the full course-wise breakdown.

George Washington University UG Programs and Requirements

George Washington University offers about 120 undergraduate majors, and base tuition sits at USD 73,450 (around INR 70.04 Lakhs) per year for international undergraduates regardless of major. GWU is test-optional for standardised tests such as SAT and ACT, so Indian Class XII applicants can apply without those scores, but Class XII marksheets and predicted results remain mandatory.

George Washington University MBA Rounds and Requirements

The George Washington University MBA at the GW School of Business admits Global MBA and Accelerated MBA cohorts for the Fall intake only; the Online, Healthcare, and Flex MBA formats admit for both Fall and Spring. GWU’s MBA sits at QS Global MBA rank 153 and FT Global MBA rank 69 for 2024, and the D.C. location routes graduates into consulting, policy, and healthcare careers. See the study MBA in the USA guide for a broader comparison.

George Washington University MBA Deadlines

GW School of Business has not yet published exact Fall 2027 round dates. The prior cycle pattern set Global MBA and Accelerated MBA Round 1 on 1 November 2025 and a rolling final deadline on 1 February 2026 for other MBA formats. International applicants requiring an F-1 visa are urged to apply in the earlier rounds so the I-20 issuance leaves enough runway. Application fee is USD 80 (around INR 7,628).

George Washington University MBA Entry Requirements

The full-time Global MBA requires a four-year bachelor’s, a competitive GMAT or GRE score (GMAT waiver possible with strong academics and 5+ years work experience), 2 to 5 years of full-time work experience, an SOP, two LORs, and an interview by invitation. Accelerated MBA is a 16-month cohort for candidates with a business or economics undergraduate background. Executive MBA candidates typically bring 10+ years of experience. English minimum for the MBA is TOEFL 100 / IELTS 7.0.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official GWU MBA admissions page for your chosen format before applying.

George Washington University PhD Admissions and Funding

George Washington University offers doctoral programs across SEAS, Columbian College, Milken School of Public Health, and the Graduate School of Education, among others. Fall entry is the norm for funded PhD seats. International PhD applicants who need a visa can only start in Fall or Spring, not Summer.

George Washington University PhD Deadlines and Requirements

SEAS PhD priority deadline is 1 December 2026 for Fall 2027 entry, with a final deadline of 15 January 2027. Complete materials, including transcripts and test scores, must reach GWU by 20 January 2027. Applicants who have completed a master’s need a minimum GPA of 3.4 on 4.0; bachelor’s-only applicants need 3.3. Three letters of recommendation are compulsory, and English minimum for PhD is TOEFL 100 / IELTS 7.0.

George Washington University PhD Funding for Indian Students

SEAS doctoral funding routes through Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) and Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs). Awarded doctoral students typically receive full tuition remission and a monthly living stipend, with the exact amount varying by department, faculty grant, and academic year. There is no separate funding application — your academic department reviews you automatically during admission. Indian PhD students often stack this internal funding with external fellowships.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official GWU SEAS doctoral admissions page for your chosen program before applying.

George Washington University Application Process for Indian Students

The application journey splits between undergraduate (via the Common Application) and graduate (via each school’s GW ApplyWeb portal). Both routes ask you to upload documents, pay the fee online, and arrange for official English test scores to be sent directly.

  1. Create an account on the Common App (for UG) or GW ApplyWeb (for PG). The Common App 2026-27 season opened 31 July 2026.
  2. Choose George Washington University from the college search and add your intended major or graduate program.
  3. Fill personal, academic, extracurricular, and family sections. Draft essays or an SOP based on prompts your program requires.
  4. Pay the application fee of USD 80 (around INR 7,628) per program through the portal by credit card in US dollars.
  5. Upload Class XII / bachelor’s transcripts and any predicted marksheets. Some graduate programs require a WES or ECE credential evaluation for Indian degrees.
  6. Request two or three letters of recommendation through the portal recommender links.
  7. Have your official IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo score sent directly to GWU by the testing agency.
  8. Submit and track status through the portal. Admission decisions and I-20 issuance follow next.

George Washington University Admission Decisions Timeline

Undergraduate Early Decision I decisions release mid-December 2026, Early Decision II decisions release mid-February 2027, and Regular Decision releases by end of March 2027. Graduate decisions release on a rolling basis, typically 6-8 weeks after your file is complete. Admitted students receive an offer letter and I-20 form; the deposit deadline is 1 May 2027 for UG admits. Deferrals may be possible for one term with dean approval.

George Washington University Documents Required for Indian Students

All documents must be officially issued or attested. Scanned uploads are accepted at the application stage, but originals or verified digital records are required after admission.

  • Valid Indian passport, biographic page (validity minimum six months beyond arrival).
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets (for UG) or bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (for PG).
  • WES or ECE credential evaluation for Indian degrees, if the graduate program requires it.
  • Statement of Purpose or personal essay, tailored to the program.
  • Two to three Letters of Recommendation from academic or professional referees.
  • Curriculum Vitae or resume (typically 1-2 pages).
  • Official English test score report — IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Duolingo.
  • GMAT or GRE score report, if the graduate program requires one.
  • Financial affidavit or bank statement showing funds for tuition plus living costs of at least USD 90,000 (around INR 85.82 Lakhs) for one year.
  • Two passport-size photographs meeting US visa specifications.

George Washington University Acceptance Rate and Selectivity

George Washington University’s overall acceptance rate sits at 44 to 47 percent, based on the most recent published cycles. The rate places GWU in the moderately selective band — well below the sub-10 percent Ivies but sharper than open-access US public flagships. See the GWU ranking band to see how this maps against peer US universities.

What Drives George Washington University Selectivity

Undergraduate admission weighs Class XII academic rigour, essays, extracurriculars, and demonstrated interest. Because GWU is test-optional, essays and school counsellor context carry more weight than they might elsewhere. Graduate admission weighs undergraduate GPA, quality of prior institution, SOP fit with a faculty research area, work experience where relevant, and English proficiency.

George Washington University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

GWU does not publish a country-specific acceptance rate. Anecdotally, Indian applicants with a 3.3+ GPA, IELTS 7.0+, and a well-argued SOP see healthy conversion in SEAS and Elliott programs. Roughly 813 Indian students are currently enrolled across levels, giving GWU a modest but visible Indian community.

Insider note: GWU rewards fit over polish. An applicant who names specific GWU faculty or a Washington-based professional network reason will read stronger than one who lists generic city or ranking reasons.

USA Student Visa Process for George Washington University Students

After you accept the GWU admission offer and pay the deposit, GWU’s International Services Office issues an I-20 form, which you use to apply for an F-1 student visa at a US consulate in India. See the USA student visa guide for the full application checklist.

The F-1 process runs in four steps. First, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,373) online. Second, complete the DS-160 form on the US State Department consular site and pay the USD 185 (around INR 17,640) visa application fee. Third, book a biometric enrolment (VAC) appointment followed by the consular interview at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. Fourth, attend the interview with your I-20, passport, admission letter, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, financial documents, and academic records. F-1 approval typically lands within 3-10 working days for Indian applicants.

2026 update: Applicants who complete a STEM master’s or PhD at GWU are eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) plus a 24-month STEM extension, giving 36 months of legal US work time after graduation.

Tips and Checklist for George Washington University Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at GWU. Start the sequence 9 to 12 months before your target intake so nothing slips near the deadline.

  • Book IELTS or TOEFL 12 months out: Score reports take 2 weeks to reach GWU officially. Book a repeat slot as a hedge.
  • Request WES evaluation early: Indian bachelor’s evaluations take 7 to 10 business days after documents arrive at WES.
  • Draft the SOP against faculty pages: Name two GWU professors or research groups whose work aligns with your interest.
  • Choose Early Decision only if committed: ED is binding at GWU and locks out other US offers.
  • Shortlist programs 6 months before deadline: Pin two safeties, two matches, and one reach at GWU peers.
  • Submit application 3-4 weeks before deadline: This buffer covers portal glitches and transcript re-uploads.
  • Prepare financial affidavit 8 weeks out: Bank statements older than 6 months are not accepted.
  • Book F-1 visa slot within 2 weeks of I-20: Consular wait times in India can stretch to 4-8 weeks in peak season.
  • Review the D.C. living cost picture: Read the USA cost of living guide before finalising your budget.

George Washington University offers Indian applicants a balanced admissions target — moderately selective, test-optional at UG, and generous with graduate seats when your file is on time. Nail the Fall 2027 deadlines, keep test scores current, and pair a research-anchored SOP with a well-documented financial plan.

Scholarship

  • Almost all international students received up to a 2000 pounds scholarship or deduction in tuition fee. I had also received.
  • We had 60 students in total for our batch. All have received the scholarship. There are no other international scholarships sponsored by the university.
  • However, you can apply for a common scholarship applicable to international students studying in UK.

Scholarship

  • GWSB Fellowship was the scholarship I received and I got this with the admission, as there was no separate way to request it. It was 20% of the tuition fees and others received it as well, with 20% being the average.
  • I'm really not sure how many students do receive it but most of the merit students, based on their previous studies, have received it. The eligibility criteria may differ, as there is no standard to this.
