What Students Say
Likes
- Course structure was made with respect to the modern standards of learning. I studied quite advanced modules and at the same time the coursework/projects which are given are quite productive and helps in holistic learning.
- Accommodation: - University of Surrey has one of the best accommodations in the UK. Finding a student accommodation in UK which is affordable and near to your University is quite tough but UOS has accommodation spreader throughout the city of Guildford which was a highlight for me.
- UOS conduct events like Careers Fair, Freshers Fair which help us to widen our network which is again a plus with respect to our career opportunities.
Dislikes
- Some of the faculty don’t tend to interact much with the students and at the same point teaching standards of them are not at par.
- Since the course was just of 1 year, it seemed like we are in a constant rush which can put a toll on one’s mental health.
Course Curriculum
- The course was quite advanced and was curated with industry 4.0 standards.
- Industrial experience was given through the introduction of modules sponsored by the organisations themselves. For instance, the Data Mining and Text Analytics module from my semester 1 was sponsored by SAS as a result, I procured a certificate from them after its completion. In terms of research, the dissertation semester does help you a lot, wherein you are expected to create a report on your thesis.
- On average 3-4 hours of classes are scheduled for over 4 days a week, which includes lab sessions and lectures.
- For my course there were 80 students across the world.
Admission Experience
- The module structure of my course was quite advanced and holistic.
- The affordable accommodation was also one of the reasons.
- The geographical aspect played a crucial role as well since the university is very close to London.
- The QS rankings were quite instrumental in deciding.
- The affordable fee structure did drive me more towards this university since I had offers from other top universities as well.
- Should have pursued a STEM course in your bachelor's subject if you are opting for a technical or techno-functional course.
- My IELTS score was 7.0 where the requirement was a minimum of 6.5.
Faculty
- Faculty and staff are helpful and informative. During my time, our programme director, Dr Colin Fu, did help us a lot in understanding the UK’s job market.
Campus Life
- Campus life is very extravagant and exciting. The university has its own student union who organises various events and at the same time the university has its own club within the university premises. It has a sports park as well for those who are interested in sports.
Part Time Jobs
- Since Guildford is a very small town, the part-time opportunities are limited, but one can find part-time jobs in and around Guildford.
- Within the University there are very less opportunities; one can get jobs like Research Assistant / Student Ambassador / Club Supervisor, etc.
Placement
- At the moment the market is competitive and the job opportunities are very scarce. One needs to network and apply for jobs religiously on a daily basis. University does have its own careers portal through which it keeps the students notified about the various opportunities and apart from that, the other sources for looking out for jobs are LinkedIn and Indeed.
- University does conduct sessions on explaining how to improve your LinkedIn profile and how to make a proper CV according to the UK standards.
Accommodation
- I paid £662 a month (which included everything) for an en-suite accommodation. Prices may vary now.
Exams
- Exams: - Only one exam was expected, which was IELTS.
- Documents required: - An updated CV, in total 2 LORs from either your academic institution or organisation. (1 each or both from academics), transcripts of your Marksheets from your bachelor's.
Fees
- £ 22,000 (2023-24)
