What Students Say
Likes
- Multi Cultural with people from all around the globe.
- Connectivity via public transportation to the college/university.
- Right in the heart of Washington DC, nation's capital.
Dislikes
- Right in the heart of Washington DC, nation's capital.
- Less connected to major IT companies as more focused on Federal.
- Campus length is restricted due to the fact that it's in DC.
Course Curriculum
- It was more practical, as it had more coding in python, R and machine learning concepts.
- Positive being the courses that were offered other than required. Negative has to be just focusing on the technical/practical aspects.
- Mostly 1 class with classes scheduled after 4:30 PM 35-40 was the average number of students in your class
- 15-20 Indian students are enrolled in my course.
Admission Experience
-
I applied for the following universities:
- University of Iowa - Admitted
- Northeastern University – Admitted
- University of Pittsburgh - Admitted
- The George Washington University - Admitted
- UC, San Diego – Rejected (I applied in the last round; mostly I feel the cohort was already full)
- University of Massachusetts, Amherst – rejected (Could not think of any other reason than applying in the last round and also it being very competitive with less fees)
- I felt it was the best among the colleges that I received admission from, looking at options like scholarships, overall fees and also the curriculum. Application process included just applying to the college through the website for my course and then sharing the IELTS score as well as WES score and then I received admission. IELTS/TOEFL were accepted and there was no need for GRE/GMAT during the time I applied. The overall admission process was fairly straightforward and easy to do.
- Fall 2023 was my intake; I had applied in March 2023 and got the decision within 15-20 days of applying. After submitting my application online, I had to submit my IELTS score card with them and then they asked for a WES evaluation to understand my BTech academics. I did this and it took me around a week to complete this and send my WES score back to GWU.
Faculty
- 1:8 I guess roughly is the faculty-to-student ratio in my course and I don't think it has any influence on the quality, as there are enough faculty to talk or discuss with.
- I don't think it guarantees getting a job but the faculty are mostly trying to help and most of them are temporary faculty who teach us classes with a full-time job outside.
- If you talk to some faculty, they can provide references when we apply to jobs.
- Suneel Grover—I have taken his class and also worked as a TA with him—is my favorite faculty.
Campus Life
- I think two campuses were there; one is at Foggy Bottom (our campus) and the other is at Mount Vernon.
- General libraries and those specific to school libraries are also there. Sports and Medical services are also good.
- Many events take place like Halloween, etc. and more can be done by joining any clubs.
- There are not many sports, as there are no open grounds in our campus. Cultural and Student Organizations are very good.
Part Time Jobs
- I would say like 5-10 students out of 80 secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions, because the competition is very tough and the process is hard as well.
- It will be an hourly rate for minimum DC wages, which was about $17/hr for me.
- You can find jobs in library, cafeterias, department offices, etc. and pay would be the same as $17/hr
- 20 hours is the maximum hours of work allowed per week
- I would rate it as 7/10 difficult to receive on-campus job in GW
- In my university, as mentioned earlier, it's somewhere between 17-20 per hour and it can be hard as well as challenging if you are taking a demanding course like MSBA or MSBA to keep up with both of them.
- For TA/RA, you can directly connect with the professor or reach out to the department asking for these positions and for others, we have an internal job portal from which you can apply. There might be few screening calls or even interviews needed to finalise the job.
Placement
- I guess 20-30% secure employment within 6 months of completing their course
- 75-85k per year is the average salary range that most students in your program can expect to earn upon graduation
- You can find them through internships, networking or online job portals like LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.
- Companies where they have been placed and their job roles. I don't have any information directly from my batchmates or friends.
- We need to apply for the companies and hope that you can be picked up.
Accommodation
- Whatsapp groups of our college helped me find my accommodation. Apartment with all facilities and rent is $600 per person
- Leasing challenges were very painful, as we have to commit and also pay a large amount upfront.
- Stay with friends and you can switch even after the classes begin if you find some good friends.
- 10-15 mins taking a metro. Some stay close to campus and some of them in my area.
Exams
- IELTS and TOEFL for english language and GRE for knowledge test. An SOP and an LOR from an academic and one from work, if you have any, would be sufficient.
- Yes, SOP, LOR and CV are the required documents in this process. No, there was no interview in my application process, so I am unaware of it and there is no influence of it in my decision. Only a CV, 2 LORs and an SOP are required.
Fees
- Tuition and Fees—$42,918
- Living Expenses - $20,850
- Other - $3,200
- The abovementioned is for 12 months; mostly tuition fees are credit-based, which was $1,995 per credit for us, and we were required to complete 30 credits in the total course. We needed to pay semester-wise fees, though.
- Rent depends on how you live and generally with sharing it's $500-$600 and transportation and other expenses like food can be around $300-$500.
Scholarship
- GWSB Fellowship was the scholarship I received and I got this with the admission, as there was no separate way to request it. It was 20% of the tuition fees and others received it as well, with 20% being the average.
- I'm really not sure how many students do receive it but most of the merit students, based on their previous studies, have received it. The eligibility criteria may differ, as there is no standard to this.
