Columbia University Accommodation: Type, Halls & Cost

I found my own private accommodation through streeteasy.com. Monthly rent is 2500 USD not including utilities. Utilities are another 200 dollars including internet and electricity. Hot water is included in the rent. Students should go for University student housing as it's much cheaper and comes with furnished. I stayed a 15 minute subway (train) ride away from the Columbia University campus, in a private rented apartment by myself. Most Indian students live in college housing that is located walking distance from campus, with roommates.

I applied to 4 colleges in total before I finally got into Columbia University: 2 accepted - Columbia and LSE. 2 rejected - Oxford and Cambridge Columbia stands out for its excellent location and institutional networks with banking and policy sectors in New York and Washington D.C. I intended to find work in NYC after graduation and that was the main reason why I chose Columbia. My intake was in August 2022. The admission process took 3 months from the time of application (February 2022) to the time of decision (May 2022). The admission process required a policy essay and personal statement, a copy of transcripts, and recommendations from professors and colleagues. GRE is optional. Overall admission process was straightforward and smooth.

When shortlisting off-campus accomodations one must consider locations, cost, space and layout and amenities. Meal plan options and food-related expenses on campus average $800-$1200 per month for students living off campus and grocery stores nearby.

The admission process is based on the application submission first, students submit their application through the common app or coalition app, typically by the January 1st deadline for regular decision. I prepared for the admission, maintaining a high GPA, especially in challenging courses like AP or IB and taking the SAT or ACT. Consultants are Crimson Education.

We were allowed to choose our own accommodations. It ranges anywhere between $1K to $1.5K on average, to live close to campus.

Overall, Columbia University was a fantastic experience. Its located in a vibrant city, with opportunities to stick to a campus life, and still enjoy everything NYC has to offer. The students are helpful and collaborative. The professors are incredibly well experienced with several accolades. All in all, had a great learning experience.

Rent in NYC especially Manhattan can be well over $1000 for a decent room. If you are sharing with someone, it will clearly decrease.

My experience at Columbia university has been exceptional so far. Its truly one of the best Ivy League universities in the world. Everything from academics, to faculty to extra curricular activities has been top - notch and worth every penny.

I've leased an apartment in the vicinity of the campus. It's about a 7 minute walk to school. I'm sharing with 2 other grad students and our rent in total is $3,400 per month. The location is absolutely amazing and this rent is one of the more affordable ones you'll find in this area.

For Graduate students Columbia doesn't offer any On-Campus accommodation so students have to search for options outside the campus. Columbia provides housing outside the campus though, people can opt for single rooms. If one wants to stay near the Campus it would cost around 900 - 1100$/month for each person if we opt for 3 bed, 1 bath or 4 bed 2 bath flats.

The flexible curriculum is a key factor, it allows student to pursue courses from both Engineering and Business schools. The Ivy League tag and the location of the University were also key factors for me.

Mix of single and double room - students have a choice. Dorms usually cost $12,000 per year but the fees is included in tuition. You can only move off-campus into an apartment.

I live in an apartment near campus and the accommodation near campus is pretty expensive. If you are inclined towards taking a private room in an apartment, the rent would usually be in the range of $900-$1200 per month, including amenities. If you're open to sharing the room, the expense can reduce by around $500.

I chose Columbia University because of its brand and location, access to immense opportunities in NYC, and the opportunity to build a good professional network.
