University at Buffalo admissions run through two intakes — Fall (August) and Spring (January) — with Fall as the primary window for Indian students where most undergraduate, graduate, and MBA programs open. Entry rests on a Class XII score around 83 percent for undergraduate majors and a bachelor’s degree with a B average (3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale, roughly 65 to 70 percent Indian equivalent) plus a valid English test for graduate programs, so an Indian applicant with a solid academic record and one recognised English test can build a compliant file quickly.

  • Next live deadline: Fall 2027 Early Action closes 1 November 2026 for undergraduate applicants; MS Computer Science and Engineering Fall 2027 priority is 10 December 2026.
  • Base tuition and application fee: Non-resident undergraduate tuition is USD 29,070 per year (around ₹27.47 Lakhs); the undergraduate application fee is USD 50 (around ₹4,725) and the graduate application fee is USD 100 (around ₹9,450).
  • Eligibility floor: Undergraduate — Class XII at roughly 83 percent (UB’s 3.0 GPA equivalent) with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 70; Graduate — bachelor’s with 65 to 70 percent (3.0 GPA) plus IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79.
  • Acceptance rate: estimated at 68 to 72 percent, based on aggregate SUNY admissions patterns; UB does not publish an official institutional figure.

Popular programs for Indian students include MS Computer Science and Engineering, MS Business Analytics and Applied AI, MS Engineering Data Science, and the STEM-designated Full-Time MBA, and applicants generally report a smooth process at University at Buffalo once transcripts and English scores are ready. The Common Application is the main undergraduate route, and the UB Graduate Application (ubgradconnect.buffalo.edu) is the sole graduate portal.

Admission Status: Open. Fall 2027 (August) is the primary intake. The Common Application for the 2026-2027 cycle opened on 31 July 2026, and Early Action for Fall 2027 undergraduate entry closes 1 November 2026 with a USD 50 (around ₹4,725) application fee. Graduate MS Computer Science and Engineering closes 31 December 2026 for Fall 2027 with a USD 100 (around ₹9,450) application fee, and Spring 2027 MS CSE closes 30 September 2026 for international candidates. Full-Time MBA Round 1 closes 15 October 2026.

Planning note: Fall 2027 Early Action is a non-binding round — you keep the freedom to accept later — so target 1 November 2026 rather than the February Regular Decision if you want your file reviewed for Merit Scholarships and Honors College consideration.

The Common Application is the accepted undergraduate route; UB also accepts ApplySUNY and the Coalition for College application, but the Common App carries most Indian applicants because a single form covers multiple US targets. Graduate applicants use UB’s dedicated Graduate Application at ubgradconnect.buffalo.edu, and MBA applicants use a separate School of Management portal.

University at Buffalo Eligibility for Indian Students

UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and expects the equivalent of a 3.0 for both undergraduate and graduate entry — that translates to around 83 percent at Class XII for undergraduate majors and roughly 65 to 70 percent (a first-division bachelor’s) at graduate level. English proficiency is separate, with distinct thresholds for undergraduate and graduate applicants.

UB Academic Thresholds by Level

  • Undergraduate: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or State Board) at roughly 83 percent, which UB reads as a 3.0 GPA on its 4.0 scale.
  • Graduate (MS, MBA): A four-year Indian bachelor’s degree; three-year bachelor’s degrees are accepted case-by-case by the Graduate School.
  • Minimum bachelor’s grade: B average (about 65 to 70 percent Indian equivalent) for admission consideration.
  • MS Computer Science and Engineering prerequisites: two-semester programming in C, C++, or Java; one computer organisation course; one data structures course; and four semesters of undergraduate mathematics or logic including theorem-proving.

University at Buffalo IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

UB publishes English-test waivers on its international English proficiency page. At the undergraduate level, automatic waivers cover citizens of Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, and the UK — India is not on this list, so Indian citizens must submit a test unless they qualify through IB English A grade 5 or higher, AP English Language grade 4 or higher, or GCSE/A Level English grade C or higher.

At graduate level, UB’s Graduate School lists a broader English-medium exemption but the standard expectation for Indian applicants is to submit a valid IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, or Duolingo score dated within two years of application. Individual departments may petition the Office of International Admissions for a case-by-case waiver, but plan on submitting a score.

Insider note: UB accepts the Duolingo English Test at 105 (UG) and 120 (Grad), which is faster and cheaper to take than IELTS or TOEFL — a useful backup if your IELTS or TOEFL slot lands after the Fall priority window.

University at Buffalo PG Programs and English Scores

Postgraduate entry runs through the UB Graduate Application at ubgradconnect.buffalo.edu, with each program setting its own priority and final deadlines around the Graduate School’s institutional minimums. Base tuition for a non-resident graduate student in Fall 2026 is USD 26,510 per year (around ₹25.05 Lakhs) for most MS programs; MBA is billed at a higher rate. For a per-program breakdown, see the course-wise fees breakdown.

All MS and MBA programs accept unofficial transcripts for initial review, with official records required upon admission. External credential evaluations (WES or ECE) are not required by the School of Management or the Graduate School — this is a specific UB policy that removes a step Indian applicants often take by default at other US universities.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University at Buffalo Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.

University at Buffalo UG Programs and Requirements

UB offers over 140 undergraduate majors across the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and School of Management, and international first-year applicants apply once through the Common Application, selecting a major or an undecided track. Non-resident undergraduate tuition for Fall 2026 is USD 29,070 per year (around ₹27.47 Lakhs).

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration4 yearsClass XII at 83 percent; competitive Mathematics grade preferredIELTS 6.0
Bachelor of Arts in Economics4 yearsClass XII at 83 percentIELTS 6.0

UG applicants without a formal English test can meet UB’s language requirement through IB English A grade 5, AP English Language score 4, GCSE English First Language grade C, or A Level English grade C — these alternatives are honoured directly on the international first-year page. SAT and ACT are optional for admission but strengthen scholarship consideration.

Planning note: UB’s Honors College has a 15 December 2026 priority deadline for Fall 2027 with distinct essays and higher academic thresholds — factor that lead time in if you are aiming for the Honors track.

University at Buffalo MBA Rounds and Requirements

UB’s Full-Time MBA is a two-year STEM-designated program run by the School of Management. STEM designation matters because it extends F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) from 12 months to 36 months, giving Indian graduates three years to work in the US after graduation. Base MBA tuition is USD 33,310 per year (around ₹31.48 Lakhs).

MBA Rounds for Fall 2027

  • Round 1: 15 October 2026 — earliest signal to the committee.
  • Scholarship Priority: 15 January 2027 — cutoff for merit scholarship consideration.
  • International Final: 15 March 2027 — hard cutoff for F-1 candidates, with decisions by 15 April 2027.

UB MBA Test Policy and Work Experience

The MBA program is test-optional — GMAT or GRE scores are not required, but applicants scoring below the 30th percentile on any GMAT section, or below 152 on GRE Verbal or Quant, are unlikely to be admitted. Work experience is not mandated as a minimum number of years, but the resume must list every post-bachelor’s role with months and years; applicants without work experience are considered but face a higher academic bar. The MBA application fee is USD 100 (around ₹9,450).

Insider note: UB does not require external credential evaluation (WES or ECE) for MBA transcripts — official Indian transcripts and degree certificates go straight to the School of Management, saving both the evaluation fee and about three weeks of turnaround time.

University at Buffalo PhD Admissions and Funding

UB doctoral programs run through the Graduate School with department-set priority deadlines, typically clustering between 15 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry. The Graduate Application at ubgradconnect.buffalo.edu is the sole portal, and the application fee is USD 100 (around ₹9,450).

UB PhD Funding for Indian Students

Admitted PhD students are typically funded through Teaching Assistantships (TA) or Research Assistantships (RA) that cover tuition and provide a stipend for the academic year. Stipend amounts vary by department, with STEM programs like Computer Science and Engineering generally offering higher rates than humanities programs; exact figures are set at offer stage per department and are not published centrally.

PhD Application Materials

  • Statement of purpose naming two or three faculty members whose work aligns with your research.
  • Three letters of recommendation — at least two from research supervisors or thesis advisors.
  • Writing sample or research portfolio where the department requires one.
  • GRE is optional for MS and PhD applicants across most departments, though some PhD committees still prefer to see scores.

Reality check: UB PhD admissions are faculty-driven — a well-fit research statement that names specific labs at UB matters more than a strong GRE score in the current cycle.

University at Buffalo Application Process for Indian Students

UB uses three distinct application platforms across the university — the Common Application for undergraduate, UB Graduate Application for MS and PhD, and the School of Management portal for MBA. Each carries the same core steps but different fees and portals.

  1. Choose your platform. Undergraduate applicants create a profile on the Common Application, which opened for the 2026-2027 cycle on 31 July 2026. Graduate applicants create an account at ubgradconnect.buffalo.edu; MBA applicants create one at ubmgtconnect.buffalo.edu/apply.
  2. Add UB to your college list (Common App users) or select your target program from the graduate program search.
  3. Upload documents: Class XII marksheets or bachelor’s transcripts (unofficial acceptable), passport photo page, resume, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation as required by your program.
  4. Upload English test: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Duolingo score report — send an official score direct from the test-maker to UB institution code 2925 (TOEFL).
  5. Pay the application fee: USD 50 (around ₹4,725) for undergraduate applicants via the Common Application; USD 100 (around ₹9,450) for graduate and MBA applicants via the UB E-Payment system.
  6. Submit and monitor status via the Application Status Portal — MBA submissions must be completed within 30 days of starting the online form.

UB Admission Decisions Timeline

  • Undergraduate Early Action: decisions released mid-January 2027 for a 1 November 2026 file.
  • Undergraduate Regular Decision: decisions released March 2027 for a 1 February 2027 file.
  • MS Computer Science and Engineering: decisions issued January to March 2027 for a 31 December 2026 file, with most notifications by end of March.
  • Full-Time MBA: international final decisions by 15 April 2027 for a 15 March 2027 file.
  • Enrolment deposit: due 1 May 2027 (UG Fall) or 10 days after acceptance, whichever is later.

University at Buffalo Documents Required

Document lists are level-specific but share a core spine. UB accepts unofficial transcripts for the initial review, with official records required only after admission — this speeds up the file for Indian applicants awaiting bachelor’s provisional certificates.

  • Passport photo page (scanned copy, valid for at least six months past intended enrolment).
  • Academic transcripts: Class XII marksheets for UG; all bachelor’s mark sheets for graduate.
  • Degree certificate or provisional certificate — required for graduate applicants; Indian degree certificates or provisional certificates from the awarding university are accepted directly.
  • English test score report — official IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, or Duolingo score sent from the test-maker.
  • Statement of purpose covering academic background, target research or career focus, and reasons for choosing UB.
  • Letters of recommendation: two for most MS programs; three for PhD; two for MBA.
  • Resume or CV listing academics, internships, projects, publications, and full-time work with months and years.
  • Financial documents — required only after admission for F-1 visa I-20 issuance; bank statements, scholarship letters, or approved loan documents accepted.
  • Portfolio or writing sample for arts, architecture, and select humanities PhD programs.

Before you apply: UB explicitly rejects credential evaluations from WES or ECE as replacements for original transcripts — send certified Indian university mark sheets and degree certificates directly, and keep those services on standby only for third-party requirements like visa loans.

University at Buffalo Acceptance Rate

UB does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. The overall admit rate is estimated at 68 to 72 percent, based on aggregate SUNY undergraduate admissions patterns and program-level reporting; graduate programs sit tighter, particularly the flagship MS Computer Science and Engineering and the Full-Time MBA where quantitative or research fit narrows the pool. UB sits in the QS World University Rankings 2027 at 416, with a strong US public-university ranking band of number 33.

What Drives UB Admissions Decisions

For undergraduate applications, UB weighs Class XII marks, curriculum rigour (PCM subjects for engineering), and demonstrated English proficiency. Optional SAT or ACT scores strengthen scholarship consideration but are not required for admission. For graduate applications, the statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and academic performance in prerequisite coursework drive decisions — the MS CSE committee, for example, explicitly evaluates programming and mathematics coursework depth.

Indian-Applicant Read on UB

UB is more selective in high-demand programs (MS CSE, MS Business Analytics, MBA) and more open in less-saturated tracks (MS Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering Data Science, and most humanities PhDs). Applicants from Class XII boards scoring 85 percent and above, or bachelor’s applicants above 70 percent with prerequisite coverage, generally see positive outcomes.

Insider note: A tight statement of purpose that names two or three UB faculty by research area is the single highest-leverage move for MS and PhD applicants, and it is one of the few controllable levers after transcripts and English test scores are set.

USA Student Visa Process for University at Buffalo Applicants

Indian students admitted to UB apply for the F-1 student visa through the US Department of State. UB issues the I-20 form once financial documents are submitted after admission; the I-20 is required to book a visa interview at a US Consulate in India. The interview slot backlog varies by consulate, so plan to book within a week of receiving the I-20. Full step-by-step guidance is available via the US student visa steps for Indian applicants.

Applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around ₹33,075) online at fmjfee.com, then the DS-160 visa fee of USD 185 (around ₹17,483) at the CGI Federal portal before booking the biometric and interview appointments. F-1 holders enrolled in STEM-designated programs (MS CSE, MS Business Analytics, MBA, and most MS engineering tracks at UB) qualify for a 24-month OPT extension, giving three years of US work eligibility after graduation.

2026 update: US consulates in India have expanded student visa interview slots each summer to clear pre-August backlogs, but the safest calendar is I-20 in April, SEVIS payment in April, interview between May and June for an August intake.

Tips and Checklist for University at Buffalo Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UB and the Graduate School’s published guidance for the current cycle.

  • Book IELTS 12 weeks out: reserve your IELTS or TOEFL slot at least 12 weeks before your target deadline — score reports take up to 13 days to reach UB.
  • Aim for Fall 2027 Early Action: the 1 November 2026 undergraduate deadline unlocks Merit Scholarship review that Regular Decision does not.
  • Use the CSE priority window: MS Computer Science and Engineering applicants filing by 10 December 2026 are considered for scholarships and TA/RA funding.
  • Skip WES for UB directly: UB accepts Indian university transcripts and degree certificates without external credential evaluation, so don’t burn the fee if UB is your only US target.
  • Draft the SOP first: request LORs 4 to 6 weeks before your deadline and share your SOP with recommenders so their letters reinforce your narrative.
  • Order official transcripts 8 weeks out: Indian universities take 4 to 8 weeks to issue sealed transcripts — request them as soon as you receive an admission offer.
  • Pay SEVIS I-901 within a week of I-20: the payment must clear before you can book the F-1 interview at your consulate.
  • Compare with other US MS options: before locking in UB, compare programs at similar tuition and ranking bands via the list of US MS universities.

UB’s Fall 2027 intake gives Indian students two clean shots at the same file — Early Action in November for scholarship review and Regular Decision in February for standard review — and the STEM-designated MBA and MS programs deliver a full 36 months of US work eligibility after graduation, which most Indian applicants use to recover tuition through post-graduation earnings.

Scholarship

  • I didn't receive any scholarship.
  • Yes, a few of my batchmates received financial scholarships. Mostly they were PhD students. They received a stipend. Also, few candidates received research assistant and teaching assistant roles. They would get $800-1200$ for a month.
  • On average, there were 10% of candidates who received scholarships. There were on-campus jobs in various departments, not only the computer science department. Developing websites and back-ends for quite a few departments like geology, history and economics.

Scholarship

  • UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers scholarships for exceptional academic performance.
  • Opportunities for teaching or research assistantships are available, providing stipends and tuition waivers for a few students (not most of them, only a few of them). For the application process, we can apply through the UB Scholarship Portal using our UBIT credentials. We have grader, RA, and TA, which are positions students can get into by talking to professors and showcasing their skills.

Scholarship

  • There is a separate scholarship portal where we can apply for scholarships, but chances are very low as the fees themselves are very low. I don't receive any scholarship in my admit. I have applied for one while applying and also after the first semester.
  • Generally, the option is to be a TA or RA with a professor for four hourly wages but Scholarship opportunities are not that many. As far as I know, none of the students in my batch received any scholarship, as it is very hard. From my end I don't know the AVG of how many students and how much amount.

Scholarship

  • In this university scholarships and grants are available only to university phd students.
  • Masters students do not receive aid or grants. No batchmates of mine received scholarship grants and this is because this university only funds phd students. But one particular student required financial aid therefore the university provided a scholarship for that student in the form of financial help

Scholarship

  • Nope, No scholarships at all. I don't know a single person who got one.
  • Most of the scholarships are for native people and undergrads.
