University of Massachusetts Lowell Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The UMass Lowell admission requirements follow standard US public-university thresholds, with English proficiency the only mandatory standardised test for most programmes.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); MBA requires stronger academic profile
  • English: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale), PTE 61; MBA requires IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 90
  • Credential Verification: WES course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts
  • Waivers: Two semesters of prior US study waives English test; MOI certificate accepted for select programmes

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 70% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ISC or state boards
  • English: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE 61, Duolingo 110, LanguageCert 70-74
  • Waivers: IB Diploma, Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level, and CBSE/ISC with English medium accepted for English waiver

Key insight: UMass Lowell accepts Duolingo English Test at 110 and LanguageCert International ESOL, both of which Indian applicants can complete faster and cheaper than IELTS. GRE and GMAT are not required for most MS and MBA programmes.

University of Massachusetts Lowell Acceptance Rate 2027

UMass Lowell reports an official acceptance rate of 83% for the most recent admission cycle, placing it among the more accessible R1 public research universities in the northeast United States. This figure reflects overall undergraduate admissions and is published on the university’s institutional research profile.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202683%Stable
202581%Up 2 points

Indian applicants meeting the recommended Class 12 or bachelor’s cutoffs and the IELTS 6.5 threshold have strong admission prospects. Graduate admission varies by department, with selective programmes such as MS Computer Science and MBA carrying tighter review.

Reality check: An 83% overall rate does not mean automatic admission. Programmes at the Manning School of Business and Kennedy College of Sciences apply their own academic and English benchmarks that sit above the institutional minimum.

University of Massachusetts Lowell vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers other UMass System schools and regional US public research universities Indian applicants typically shortlist alongside UMass Lowell.

UniversityUS News Global RankAvg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Massachusetts Lowell#49734,326 / 30.03 lakhLower fees among Boston-area R1 publics
UMass Amherst#18139,000 / 34.13 lakhFlagship UMass campus, higher research ranking

Northeastern University#21260,000 / 52.5 lakhCo-op programme, private
Suffolk UniversityNA42,000 / 36.75 lakhDowntown Boston private

UMass Lowell delivers R1 research access, STEM OPT eligibility and Boston-area proximity at graduate fees roughly 40% below neighbouring private universities like Northeastern. The 83% acceptance rate and merit-based Graduate International Excellence award make the shortlist realistic for Indian applicants with mid-band academics.

UMass Lowell suits Indian STEM applicants seeking affordable US master’s education with STEM OPT and Boston-corridor employer access. Total investment of USD 54,659 per year (INR 47.83 lakh) balances against median starting salaries of USD 75,000 to 95,000 (INR 65.6 to 83.1 lakh), while F-1 visa processing routes are well-established for the campus.

It is not the right fit for applicants targeting a top-100 world ranking or Ivy-tier brand recognition. UMass Amherst offers a stronger research profile at the same UMass System, and remains the natural alternative for Indian applicants seeking a higher-ranked public option.

University of Massachusetts Lowell FAQs

Ques. What is the application fee for UMass Lowell for Indian applicants?

Ans. The application fee is USD 70 (INR 6,125) for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants. UMass Lowell offers fee waivers for applicants demonstrating financial need through participation in NACAC fairs, TRIO programmes or similar pathways. The waiver request goes through the admissions office directly rather than an automated system, and Indian applicants should email the fee waiver request with supporting documentation before submitting the application.

Ques. Does UMass Lowell require the GRE or GMAT for MS or MBA?

Ans. Most MS programmes at UMass Lowell have made the GRE optional, including MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics and MS Engineering Management. The Manning School MBA does not require the GMAT for applicants with strong academic and professional profiles, though a competitive GMAT score of 550 and above strengthens applications from Indian candidates without significant work experience.

Ques. Can UMass Lowell international students work part-time on campus?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at UMass Lowell may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during academic terms and full-time during official breaks. Common on-campus roles include research assistantships, teaching assistantships (for graduate students), library work and dining services. On-campus employment does not require additional USCIS authorisation, and typical hourly wages fall in the USD 15 to 18 range for undergraduate positions.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise UMass Lowell?

Ans. Major Indian lenders including HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI Bank, SBI and Bank of Baroda recognise UMass Lowell for education loans up to INR 60 lakh without collateral for STEM programmes. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing offer no-cosigner USD loans for graduate students admitted to UMass Lowell’s STEM master’s programmes, with typical approval sanctioned within two weeks of admission letter receipt.

Ques. How long does OPT last at UMass Lowell after graduation?

Ans. Standard Optional Practical Training grants 12 months of work authorisation to all UMass Lowell graduates on F-1 visas. STEM-designated programmes such as MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics, MS Engineering Management and all engineering master’s degrees qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, bringing total post-study work eligibility to 36 months. The ISSO office handles OPT applications 90 days before graduation.

Ques. Can UMass Lowell applicants get an English test waiver?

Ans. UMass Lowell waives the English proficiency requirement for Indian applicants who completed two full semesters of prior academic study at an accredited US institution. IB Diploma holders and Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level candidates with strong English scores also qualify for the waiver. The Medium of Instruction certificate from an English-medium Indian bachelor’s programme is accepted for select graduate programmes on a case-by-case basis.

Ques. What documents does UMass Lowell require for the F-1 visa I-20?

Ans. UMass Lowell issues the Form I-20 after admitted students submit financial documentation covering the first year’s estimated expenses of USD 54,659 for graduate students. Required documents include bank statements dated within six months, a sponsor affidavit if funded by family, scholarship or assistantship letters, and a copy of the passport biodata page. The ISSO processes I-20 requests within 10 to 15 business days of complete document submission.

Ques. Does UMass Lowell offer conditional admission for Indian students?

Ans. UMass Lowell offers conditional admission to Indian applicants who meet academic requirements but fall short on English proficiency scores. Conditional admits enrol in the Navitas at UMass Lowell pathway programme, completing English language coursework alongside credit-bearing university classes. Successful completion of the pathway triggers direct entry into the degree programme without a separate re-application, typically within one to two semesters depending on English starting level.

Campus Life

10

  • The campus is well-equipped with modern facilities. The library is a bit smaller compared to other R1 universities, but it is sufficient. There are multiple student clubs. Sports and athletics facilities are among the best in this region.
