Dartmouth College Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants to Dartmouth graduate programmes clear a common academic threshold with school-specific test scores, evaluated on both undergraduate transcripts and English proficiency.

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree (10+2+4 preferred; 10+2+3 with strong record accepted) with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended) for Thayer graduate programmes and 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended) for Tuck MBA
  • English proficiency (Thayer graduate): TOEFL iBT band 5 or higher (1-6 scale, exams from 21 January 2026) / 100 or higher (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 7.0 or higher, or Duolingo English Test 135 or higher. Component scores 5+ for TOEFL new scale required
  • Standardised tests: GMAT or GRE for Tuck MBA (waiver possible with strong quantitative background); GRE optional for Thayer MEM/MS from 2024 onward
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts recommended for Thayer and Guarini programmes; Tuck accepts direct transcripts with certified translations

Undergraduate admission at Dartmouth requires Class 12 completion with 85% or CGPA 8.5/10 (recommended), plus TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge English scores; SAT and ACT are test-optional through the 2027 cycle for select cohorts. Confirm the latest test policy on the Dartmouth admissions website.

Key insight: Thayer MEM and MS applicants with Indian engineering degrees typically waive the GRE by submitting a strong academic transcript and quantitative letter of reference; verify the current waiver policy at the Thayer admissions page.

Dartmouth College Acceptance Rate 2027

Dartmouth College’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate sits at 4-6% (estimated) across recent cycles, placing it among the most selective Ivy League colleges. Tuck MBA acceptance runs at 22-25% (estimated) and Thayer graduate acceptance at 18-25% (estimated), reflecting smaller applicant pools and self-selection at the graduate level.

CycleAcceptance RateTrend
Class of 2028 (Fall 2024 entry)5.3% (estimated)Flat
Class of 2027 (Fall 2023 entry)6.0% (estimated)Down
Class of 2026 (Fall 2022 entry)6.2% (estimated)Down

Indian applicants face an even sharper filter because the international quota at Ivy League colleges is capped, and Dartmouth’s undergraduate international share is roughly one-tenth of the class. Graduate rates at Tuck and Thayer are more forgiving because applicant pools are smaller and quantitative preparation carries decisive weight.

Reality check: A #1 rank in Class 12 or a top-10 IIT undergraduate transcript is a baseline, not a differentiator, for Dartmouth applications. Test scores, essays and reference quality carry the outcome.

Dartmouth College Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

The total annual cost of studying at Dartmouth for Indian graduate students ranges between $110,000 and $125,000 (₹105.3 to ₹119.7 Lakh) per year, combining school-specific tuition and Hanover cost of living. Undergraduate cost of attendance runs slightly higher due to mandatory on-campus room and board.

Dartmouth College Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2027

Tuition varies sharply by school and programme. Tuck MBA sits at the top of the fee band, while Thayer graduate programmes charge a per-credit rate that translates into similar annual totals for full-time students.

Dartmouth College Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Dartmouth’s 269-acre main campus in Hanover sits on the Connecticut River in New Hampshire, roughly 2 hours by road from Boston. The campus is walkable, snow-heavy in winter and organised around the historic Baker-Berry Library and the Dartmouth Green.

  • Location and transport: Hanover is a small town; Dartmouth Coach runs direct buses to Boston Logan Airport and New York City used regularly by international students
  • Housing: Undergraduate housing is guaranteed for all four years; graduate housing at Sachem Village and Summit on Juniper allocates on a first-application basis with 30-40% of graduate students accommodated on campus
  • Facilities: Baker-Berry Library, Feldberg Business and Engineering Library, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on campus, and the Byrne Hall MBA hub at Tuck
  • Indian student community: Milan (South Asian Students Association) and the Tuck India Club run cultural, Diwali and Holi events, connecting current Indian students across Tuck, Thayer, Geisel and undergraduate cohorts

What Indian students say: The tight-knit Tuck cohort and short walk between classrooms and residences is the biggest lifestyle advantage over larger Ivies. Winter months demand serious gear and daylight is short from November to February.

Dartmouth College Scholarships 2027

Dartmouth funds Indian applicants through school-specific fellowships and need-based aid rather than a single India-nominated award. Tuck and Guarini publish the largest awards for graduate applicants.

Dartmouth College Rankings 2027

Dartmouth’s strongest global positions are its Ivy League MBA and undergraduate teaching brand rather than research volume, with THE World Rankings 2026 placing it at #180 and QS World Rankings 2027 at #270 after a small decline in QS since 2023.

At subject level, Dartmouth’s Tuck School is ranked #62 in Business and Management as per QS Subject Rankings 2026 and #26 worldwide for Global MBA as per Financial Times 2026. THE Business and Economics subject rank sits at #51 and ARWU Economics at #40. Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 further places Dartmouth at #199 in Engineering and #139 in Medicine globally.

Key insight: Indian applicants filtering universities by QS position alone underestimate Dartmouth. The FT MBA #26, ARWU Economics #40 and Ivy League brand recognition carry more weight with Indian employers and US visa processing than the raw QS World position.

Dartmouth College Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Dartmouth reports strong graduate employment outcomes concentrated at Tuck and Thayer, with the smaller cohort size supporting individualised recruiter access relative to larger MBA and MS programmes.

  • Tuck MBA employment within 3 months: 94-96% (estimated, based on prior Tuck employment reports); verify at the current Tuck Career Development Office publication
  • Tuck MBA median starting salary: $175,000 (₹167.6 Lakh) (market median for top-25 US MBA programmes; verify at Tuck Career Report)
  • Thayer graduate placement: STEM MEM/MS graduates access 3-year OPT and typical MEM salaries of $95,000 to $115,000 (₹91.0 to ₹110.1 Lakh) in the US market
  • Top recruiter sectors: Consulting (McKinsey, Bain, BCG), technology (Amazon, Google, Microsoft), investment banking and private equity, healthcare and pharma, energy and sustainability
  • Careers support: Dedicated Tuck Career Development Office, Thayer Graduate Career Services and an alumni network of 80,000+ globally with active India chapters

Insider note: Indian Tuck MBA graduates historically place well into US consulting and technology roles, with a sponsorship-friendly recruiter list. Return-to-India offers cluster at Tata, Reliance strategy roles and Indian growth-stage startups.

Dartmouth College vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers Ivy League and near-Ivy peers where Indian applicants routinely apply alongside Dartmouth for MBA and MS programmes. Ranks reflect the latest QS 2027 and Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 editions.

UniversityQS World 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg PG Fee (Annual)Differentiator

Dartmouth stands out among Ivies for its concentrated Tuck MBA cohort of around 290 students per class, tighter alumni network per graduate, and STEM-designated Thayer engineering pathway for Indian applicants seeking 3-year OPT. It is the only Ivy where the graduate school is a distinctly small college within a small college town, which shapes recruiting access and student community.

Dartmouth is right for the Indian applicant who wants a top-30 global MBA or STEM-designated engineering degree at an Ivy, with the total 2-year investment of $168,500 to $200,000 (₹161.4 to ₹191.5 Lakh) offset by median MBA starting salaries near $175,000 and 3-year OPT access after Thayer STEM programmes. Fellowship aid at Tuck and Guarini softens the effective cost for competitive candidates who apply in early rounds.

It is not the right fit for Indian students who want a big-city Ivy experience with year-round easy access to a major metro, or who need a high-volume undergraduate STEM programme; NYU or the University of Southern California suit that profile better while still recruiting into similar consulting and tech roles.

Dartmouth College FAQs

Ques. What is the GMAT or GRE waiver policy for Tuck MBA applicants from India?

Ans. Tuck MBA requires a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score with no blanket waiver for Indian applicants. Candidates from quantitative undergraduate backgrounds (engineering, mathematics, physics) or with CFA/CA credentials may request a case-by-case waiver by contacting the Tuck admissions office before submitting. Verify the latest waiver policy at the Tuck Applying page each cycle.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on F-1 visa while studying at Dartmouth College?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the term and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work needs Curricular Practical Training authorisation after two full-time terms, typically tied to a required internship for Thayer MEM/MS or a Tuck MBA summer internship. Off-campus economic hardship employment requires OVIS approval.

Ques. How does Dartmouth handle transcript verification for Indian bachelor’s degrees?

Ans. Thayer School and Guarini graduate programmes recommend a WES course-by-course evaluation for Indian bachelor’s transcripts, which typically takes 4 to 8 weeks after documents reach WES. Tuck MBA accepts direct university transcripts in sealed envelopes with certified English translations. Start credential verification 8 to 10 weeks before your target round deadline to avoid application delays.

Ques. What financial documents do Indian applicants need for the I-20 form at Dartmouth College?

Ans. Admitted Indian students must show liquid funds covering the first year of tuition plus living costs (roughly $110,000 to $125,000 or ₹105 to ₹120 Lakh) to receive their I-20. Accepted proofs include bank statements dated within 6 months, education loan sanction letters from recognised Indian banks, scholarship award letters and sponsor affidavits with matching bank support.

Ques. Which Indian banks provide education loans for Dartmouth College?

Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda and specialised lenders like Prodigy Finance and Avanse fund Dartmouth College tuition. Loan amounts up to ₹1.5 to ₹2 crore are common for Tuck MBA candidates, with rates ranging from 9% to 12% depending on collateral. Prodigy Finance offers non-collateral loans specifically for admitted Tuck MBA and Thayer students.

Ques. Is an interview mandatory for Tuck MBA and Thayer MEM applicants from India?

Ans. Tuck MBA guarantees interviews for candidates who submit their complete application by each round’s guaranteed interview deadline; late-round applications are interviewed by invitation only. Interviews are conducted on-campus, virtually via video or by regional alumni volunteers in India. Thayer MEM does not require interviews for most applicants; the admissions committee may request one for borderline cases.

Ques. Does Dartmouth offer refunds if an Indian student withdraws after enrolling?

Ans. Dartmouth follows a tiered refund schedule based on the withdrawal date within the term. Withdrawals before the term starts typically receive a full tuition refund minus the enrolment deposit, while mid-term withdrawals refund 80% in week 1, 60% in week 2 and no refund after week 6. Housing and health fees follow separate pro-rated refund schedules published by the Bursar’s Office.

Ques. What is the application fee for Dartmouth College graduate programs?

Ans. Thayer School charges $75 as a non-refundable application fee for MEM, MS and MEng applicants. Tuck MBA charges $250 per application. Guarini graduate school fees vary by programme, typically $60 to $75. Fee waivers are available for military candidates, US public-service programme members, Dartmouth alumni and financial-hardship applicants; Indian applicants can request a waiver through the admissions office with supporting documentation.

Overview

I applied to this college for its extensive cell bio research and I'm happy that it lived up to my expectations. The environment is a green flag for research and there is a lot of support you can find along your way here.

There are tonnes (I honestly have lost track) but as a grad student I don't think most of us care to join these clubs.

Overview

The financial aid award they gave was great. The setting of the college is rural and something I'd never experienced before. The small class sizes were also a plus - the largest class I've been in had 100 people, while most of my classes have been 10-20 people.

Fees

Tuition is pretty steep - the total cost for the school is $75k for the upcoming year. That includes tuition, student fees, health insurance, room and board, dining plan, books, and transportation.

Overview

I chose based on its location, size, and reputation. It was also the best college I got into for undergrad. Dartmouth is very beautiful and also gave me the best financial aid package which is why I decided to attend Dartmouth.

Fees

I got great financial aid, but tuition, like any normal private university in the US, is quite high. I believe that if your parents make below 100k, you do not get any loans included in your financial aid package - they are replaced by grants.

Overview

Dartmouth offers one of the best MEM courses in the united states. It offers a great mix of engineering and business courses from Thayer school of engineering and Tuck school of business.

The campus is very beautiful located in the centre of Hanover, which is majorly a college town. It's a small yet beautiful place on the East coast and gives the chance to be refreshingly close to nature and experience all the seasons and witness the picturesque fall colors.
